3x22 'Alexander Kirk' (No. 14)

I hate backdoor pilots. They take time away from the characters we care about to push new characters as awesome often to the detriment of our characters. It's annoying. That said I ended up really liking this. Tom was great and I think he'll work better as a lead character instead of a supporting one. I liked Scottie and the rest of the cast, and I liked the organisation. So I'll probably check out the new series.

• I think Red has a 'secret' problem that he really needs to get help for. How the hell does he know that Tom is Scottie's son? [And why the hell didn't Tom ask him that?] Did he engineer or otherwise help along baby Christopher's disappearance? If not then when he did he learn the truth and why keep it a secret?

Also I thought we might learn a dark secret about Tom's past because Red was still insisting up to the wedding that Liz didn't really know Tom and that he was dangerous. Is there going to be any payoff for that?

• The fact that Scottie was the one to save Agnes not Red seriously annoys me. After losing Lizzie there is no way Red would be caught unawares over Agnes safety. I don't buy it for a second.

• I really liked Tom! I liked him reassuring the little girl and then saving her by forcing the rest of the team to take her to meet an ambulance. I enjoyed his break in at the Turkish embassy and loved how he set up the switching of the cigarettes.

• I like that the truth about Scottie being Tom's mother is out from the beginning. I even like that he knows the truth but Scottie doesn't yet because I feel like it could add a really interesting dimension to their interactions. As long as it's not dragged out for 4 seasons.

• I loved Harold's little pensive realisation that when they started this revenge quest Alexander Kirk was the criminal who would be controlling the next president and now it's going to be Red. It also ties into Scottie pointing out that over the years that Red has been working with the Taskforce he's actually expanded his criminal empire which I found very interesting.

• I really loved the baptism scene. Tom calling the team family and then asking them to be Agnes's godparents was a genuinely lovely moment. I liked that Red went, even if it was to stand sadly in the back and watch. Poor Red.

• For all that Liz and Tom didn't have much family Agnes is sure gaining it at a quick rate. A maternal grandfather a couple eps ago, 4 godparents and now a paternal grandmother (and grandfather?). Plus she has Red. And her parents because Liz isn't dead.

• Considering that Tom is Scottie's son you'd think TPTB would try harder to make sure there wasn't any UST in their interactions. When he pushed her against the door frame by her throat I was getting some serious UST and then at the end with her cupping his face and her line about 'love and hate' and the way she says it... was she coming on to him? I mean he knows the truth but she doesn't and it really seemed like she was coming on to him. Awkward!

"Your wife is in a much better place." - Solomon... and then Tom shoots him! And leaves him to die or get captured. That was awesome. I loved that moment. Honestly I also think it was necessary. Solomon played a huge role in Liz's death, perhaps the biggest role even. If he hadn't stopped the van on the way to the hospital [so stupid] she might have lived. The idea that Tom would be fine working with Solomon after that is a bit much.

• I am really curious about how they are going to deal with the whole Liz/Tom situation next season. She's not dead obviously so how are they going to explain their separation? Who gets Agnes? I am hoping the shows will do a lot of crossovers especially considering how entwined in the same business all the characters are. Not even just big crossover events but little ones like Dumont needs some help and calls up Aram.
