Episode 1 ‘Spring of the Dead’

• Takashi slapping Rei when she questioned him annoyed me. She wasn’t being hysterical and her being all ‘wtf’ with him was completely understandable – but then added to that Takashi and Hirashi having a moment of silent communication and making the decision between them about what to do (the whole trust me/I trust you thing) and thus essentially the two men making the ‘sensible’ decision together and leaving the ‘emotional’ female out of it really pissed me off.

• I love that the first fight with a zombie has Rei doing really well.

Episode 2 ‘Escape From the Dead’

• Saeko is pretty awesome. I loved not only her kicking ass but the respectful way she dealt with the male student and her calmness and competence.

“Protecting a man’s pride is a woman’s duty.” – Saeko. Um. How about no. So, so much no to that. Wow, cultural differences. I... *hands* I just find that really horrible.

• I really didn’t like Saya freaking out helplessly when the zombies broke into the classroom. The fact that she was saved by Hirano is fine, she’s not a fighter, and even the freaking out is fine but... she couldn’t have tried to run or grabbed a weapon to defend herself? Saya is smart and have her stand there screaming is stupid. It particularly annoys me because the only reason I can see for it to have played out like that was to make Hirano look even better in his rescuing her (since, after all, Saya kept pwning his ass before this. And I’m feeling this tie back in to Saeko’s quote there.) I mean the second time she’s cornered she throws things at the zombie and then grabs a weapon and uses it against him.

• I loved Saeko’s impressed look when Rei took out one of the zombies.

Episode 4 ‘Running in the Dead’

• What was up with this episode? Considering this series is only twelve episodes and has in fact only been on for three episodes – why the hell did they waste so much of this episode playing recap? Recap episodes can be useful but this is ridiculous. This episode ended up annoying me a fair amount.

• Did we seriously need to have Rei assaulted and held hostage by a crazy guy? Really? No. Takashi killing a human was actually a very important moment, as was Rei leaving him to the zombies so purposefully, but the whole thing could have played out differently I think.

Episode 5 ‘Streets of the Dead’

• It was nice to see other people, adults at that, and something more of what was happening beyond our little group. I especially want to see more of Rika who is clearly Shizuka’s friend.

• Rei was pretty awesome! Hirano, Takashi and Saeko get to be awesome as well. Saya and especially Shizuko continue to stand around uselessly.

“At that point we were no longer running away. We were attacking for the first time, in order to survive. And none of us questioned it. In one day... in just one day we had changed that much.” – Takashi. This does tie back to the previous episode’s events and the theme that’s building about how quickly things change, how quickly people can change when put in such a dire situation, which made the previous episode a little less irritating. This is a theme I find very interesting. Also – these six knew each other, some more than others, but weren’t a group of friends. And yet in such a short amount of time they have bonded together so tightly, and trust each other so implicitly. They’ve become this forged-in-danger unit and that’s the other side of this theme, and something else I am really enjoying watching.

Episode 6 ‘In the Dead of the Night’

• I sometimes find it very hard to watch disaster/end of the world shows/movies because I now find it so hard not to think about the animals and I find it so sad that it takes me out of my enjoyment of what I’m watching. Seeing the dog made me think of it and I really hope they end up taking it with them for some reason.

• The bathroom scene was kind of hilarious. How exactly were we supposed to take Rei massaging Shizuka’s breasts? And then Saeko’s breasts too. While the girls moaned. So fan service obviously but in show – seriously what are we supposed to think? The femslash practically writes itself!

Episode 7 ‘Dead Night and the Dead Ruck’

• Saeko is so very practical. But we knew that when she killed the student. It’s something I really love about her.

“It’s a man’s decision.” – Saeko. Gag. Why can it not be just Takashi’s decision?

“Something good happened.” – Rei
“What’s that?” – Saya
“I realised that we’re still human!” – Rei

Tying back in to the themes I mentioned in episode 5 about how quickly people can change when faced with the end of everything. I loved this moment. I loved them finding their mercy and compassion– as Rei says what makes them human. Life had so rapidly become horror and killing and fear and anger that they find themselves doing things they never thought they would or could do. They could have built an impenetrable shell around themselves and it would always have been just them but saving Arisa changes that. I do think it would have played a little better if we’d had a scene of them all choosing together to turn their backs on other survivors.
