A Lie Guarded

I really enjoyed it.

• Okay, Jasper’s prank on Jaha was pretty funny. It is nice to see the characters having fun.

• On the one hand I really can’t blame Luna her skepticism and wariness with Skaikru. She’s 100% right – if she didn’t want to offer her Nightblood they would force her. (Hello Mountain Men! I love all the callbacks to various past bad guys/terrible choices only with our heroes in those positions. It’s great.) On the other hand, Luna was all about pacifism and peace so one would think helping any way she could to prevent more people dying (like she watched her people do) would actually be a priority with her.

• No, Nyko! D: I feel really sad about that. Also why was he even there? Moral support for Luna? He should have stayed at Arkadia or gone back to Trikru, I'm sure they need their healer back.

• I loved Kane cupping Bellamy’s face and his worry over him. Then at the end with him reassuring Bellamy that they would get through it. They’re great.

"If your motives were pure you would have shared your plan with me." ...fair enough? I don’t understand why Kane didn’t fill Roan in on the new plan. The ‘backup’ fix with Arcadia, sure, that makes sense. But there was not only no reason not to tell him about this new Nightblood hope, there was every reason to tell him. It’s not like he would find it blasphemy and automatically reject it as an option. While I get that Roan is in a precarious position here just dropping the alliance seems hasty. The Skaikru really are his, and his people’s, only hope for a future. Also – why kill Trikru? I realise they’re firm allies at this point but they’re not actually the same thing.

"You’re planning to die. Planning to leave me alone." Aww, Monty.

• Wait, why the hell wouldn’t Monty be on that list? Jasper I kind of get – though beyond him being super annoying and suicidal where is her 100 loyalty? But Monty who is full of important knowledge of growing things and tech and engineering and crap?! Who would be both super helpful in maintaining and fixing the ark, in dealing with unexpected issues and with growing food? It makes absolutely no sense! I know from a close up cap in the last episode that goddamn Jaha was on the list. Jaha??

• Oh, thank god Monty knows the truth. I was so worried that he was kept entirely in the dark too. It’s a big relief that he not only knew why she would make the list but actually agreed with its creation. Even if he was shocked and appalled he wasn’t on it. I’m shocked and appalled!

• Okay so my first reaction to Clarke shock-batoning Jasper was a mix of ‘awesome!’ and ‘LOL’. First, while Jasper doesn’t always irritate me (he usually veers wildly between it and being okay) it was still rather enjoyable to watch him go down. Second, I just really love Clarke a) shock baton/shooting/getting physical with people, b) Clarke being all leader-y/in-charge/taking no shit, and c) Clarke making morally-grey/suspect choices. And whoo boy was this a grey one. I love the parallel to Clarke basically recreating the situation that lead to her father’s death – except this time she’s Jaha and Jasper’s her.

“And Raven…” ...is so awesome that no explanation is needed! Love.

• Monty, you are the best. I love how reasonable and sane he is (which automatically puts him over Jaha regardless of engineering seniority any day.) I love that he wasn’t actually upset about not being on the List. I love him trying to calmly talk some sense into Clarke and switching tactics when he isn’t getting through to her. I love Monty’s hope and belief in Clarke, and that all the same he will still confront her and do what he feels necessary. I love how much screen time they are getting together this episode. Their relationship is one of my favourites and it was sorely missed last season.

"I haven’t become anyone." Uhhhhhhhh. That’s a lie. Probably to herself as much as to Monty. Really he should have just pointed out that she’s behaving exactly as Jaha did when he killed her father. Also I wish he’s brought up the culling and how the council was going to secretly kill a bunch of people but when the truth came out people volunteered in order to save others. This is very relevant (not that distant) history here! It bugged me that it wasn’t mentioned.

"You’re not a prisoner, Luna. You have a choice." Raven talking Luna into helping them was such a great scene. Both sides were completely understandable and the actors really sold it. I love the theme of greater good vs choice this season. Also I'm shipping Raven/Luna now.

"I happened." ♥ Badass! I loved Raven saving Abby in the nick of time. I loved her casual ‘Luna’s here, get back to the boat’. They all go off to play in the woods, meanwhile Raven literally solves all their problems and saves everyone, lol.

• I actually rather liked the Jaha/Clarke scene. Clarke’s practicality coming up against emotion. I mean she’s not wrong that ending up with no doctors or engineers would vastly lessen the chance of the new 100 actually surviving. It only makes sense to save people who not only can best contribute to group/species survival but to also only pick the healthiest people. But at the same time Jaha is also correct that people need to feel like they ‘have a say in their fate’. And once again we get yet another choice where both sides are understandable.

• Octavia totally dropped herself over the side of that cliff just to deny Echo/Azgeda any satisfaction. I love her.

• I love that during the Octavia vs Azgeda scene it’s the two men who are the redshirts easily killed by Octavia, leaving her to face Echo. And get her ass kicked.

"It’s the only choice you gave yourself. You have to convince people not lie to them." Huh. That is all completely true. Clarke choosing to lie was the wrong choice (imo too) and by doing so she backed herself into a corner. After that she had to keep lying. Because she doesn't trust people, she weighs the odds and goes with the pragmatic choice first, and maybe her arc this season is learning a different way? ... also Jasper is being suspicious mature here.

"When Jaha is looking reasonable it’s time to reassess." ... okay, Jasper stop saying things that make sense now. Stop being sensible, you're freaking me out.

"You’re going to realise... that foam bit was funny." Damn it, Jasper. ...It was. I actually really liked Jasper in this scene and I am feeling very disgruntled about it right now.

... I am on to you show! You're going to do your best to make Jasper likeable and force me to care as he chooses to live again only for him to die a horrible death. I've watched three seasons of you and I am not falling for it!

• I liked the Raven/Murphy moments.

• Ouch, poor Bellamy. I loved Roan making Echo tell Bellamy – you killed her, you tell him – and I liked that his grief actually did affect her. But the trust is definitely beyond dead now.

• I 100% knew Ocatvia wasn’t dead. I mean it didn’t seem like a situation someone would survive but I knew she would. I just thought we wouldn't see it until the end of the next episode or so. I’m mostly curious about her horse somehow finding her. How? Did Lincoln teach him to track too? That is a really damn smart and loyal horse! I need a name and to know that they're making space for him on the new Ark.
