Red Queen

+ I liked Octavia throughout which surprised me a little. But I thought they did a great job showing how in over her head she was and that she realised it, and just how young she still was. I loved her response to the stolen blankets situation. The hall fight scene was great. But I really loved that last Octavia/Jaha scene and her finally been forced to confront the harsh truths of leadership instead of simply judging it and I loved that it was Jaha that lead to that new understanding, and in a way also helped her with a new understanding of what happened on the ark.

+ I liked Octavia’s whole "You are Wonkru. Or you are the enemies of Wonkru." refrain. I'm excited to see what happens when that comes up against Clarke/Madi and especially Spacekru. I foresee a lot of friction. I'm also really interested in the inner conflicts within Wonkru because there have to be some simmering under the surface. Where do Abby/Kane/Jackson(/Niylah?) stand in all this? Is Kane in the ring at the end because he was fermenting dissent? Jackson in particular is interesting to me because of his relationship with Miller. They're now a couple but Jackson has a long time loyalty to Abby and he's a healer at his core, something Miller acknowledges. And yet in the current time Miller is one of Octavia's main guards, so where does this leave their relationship?

+ I’m really gonna need more flashbacks to understand how they got from that one time conclave cage fight to it being a full on coliseum situation with regular fights and cheering spectators. I can buy it progressing that way but I need to see those steps.

+ The fact that Abby was on the other side of the hatch screaming for Clarke, and fighting to get to her, at the same time Clarke was calling for her mom just made that scene even sadder in retrospect.

+ I'm very pleased that Jackson and Miller are a couple now. What little we got was very sweet.

+ The opening with Miller/Octavia sparring was great. I think they're the last of the delinquents alive in the bunker and the two people in there closest to Bellamy so I'm really glad they became close.

+ I also like the Octavia/Niylah friendship.

+ I find the Indra/Octavia/Gaia relationship dynamics fascinating. It didn't appear as if Indra was super happy about how Gaia ended up accepting Octavia as leader, nor where that ended up leading. Indra's issues with Gaia in previous seasons came off as her being upset that Gaia had rejected her place as Indra's heir and a clash between a believer/non-believer but in this episode it suddenly seems much more like Indra is perturbed by Gaia's deep faith and where that could lead her. TBH I'm sort feeling that right now too. I ended the episode wondering if with Jaha's death he passed the fanatic religious-zealotry leadership torch on to Gaia. The way that she changed her opinion on red-blooded Octavia's suitability as a leader, how she expressed it, and the way she took over from Indra as mentoring Octavia at the end was rather worrisome.

I'm really curious if there's going to be a power-struggle between Indra and Gaia as advisors and influences over Octavia, either subtle or overt. I wonder if this won't lead to Indra to taking a position against Octavia at some point (something I never thought I'd see.) Either Kane in the fight at the end being a tipping point, or perhaps when/if things don't change once they reach the surface. I also can't wait to see where Madi and Clarke fit in and how they change things. I want to know if Gaia is going to change her focus once there's a natural nightblood in the picture. Fingers crossed that these five and all the complicated issues between them get some good focus this season.

+ I like Kara. I found her actions sympathetic if wrong. I loved that moment when she told Abby/Kane she 'needed to leave because she wanted to shoot them' mainly because of how she said it. She came off very sincere and as someone who was becoming overcome with emotions but who really didn't want to hurt/kill anyone. Even when her plan is destroyed she can't bring herself to kill Kane/Abby who she blames for so much loss in her life. And then the contrast between that and Kara at the first bunker conclave who just immediately and viciously fights to survive to the point that she kills not only her own people but the people she trusted and knew enough to mutiny with.

+ I like how the Abby/Kane situation played out. I like that Abby got to be angry and that Kane was respectful of that but was also not really sorry for his choice, and I like how they finally made up.

+ I was mostly left unmoved by Jaha’s death. I loved his mention of Wells; I liked his goodbye with Abby and Kane and that they were there with him in the end; I appreciate that he went out trying to save his people to the very end; I liked him helping Niylah with her tire; I liked his final scene with Octavia. But as a character he’s always been one of my least favourites, and despite the occasional moments I've enjoyed him, I’m mostly left glad that if a character had to be killed off it was him.

+ Jaha probably should have given Ethan over to Abby/Kane to watch after/raise and not Octavia.

+ I wish there had been some women in the group of Grounders Octavia killed outside the cafeteria.

+ I wonder how much better things might have been if Clarke had never tried to unblock the hatch? It was the noise she caused that lead to the discovery that they couldn't get out which in turn lead to the complete breakdown. If she hadn't been there when would they have tried to get out? Would anyone have tried before the five years was up? It wouldn't have been harmony and peace within but it also wouldn't have so immediately gone to shit so quickly.

+ I am glad that it wasn't Clarke's excavating that blocked the hatch into the bunker because she just doesn't need that on her conscious too.
