iaria: (Turned Away)

I really liked this take on Cinderella.

+ Ella’s angry about her lot in life not just serenely accepting. She’s looked down on and lashes back out at people. She’s grumpy and pouts and throws tantrums. She also so desperately wants to be a part of things, to be accepted and wanted. She was also rather naive in ways I found sweet. Her excitedly walking the top of the rocks to show off to Charles was sweet. It emphasised how starved she was for friendship. I liked her. She has a lot of personality and felt more fleshed out than other Cinderella's.

+ Her first scene with the Godmother was great. Her reveal that she cut off all her hair because she wanted to die and that helped her feel better was so unexpectedly dark but also great. I also liked their talk about friends and Ella’s reveal/realisation that she doesn’t have friends and how pleased Ella was to make a friend in the Godmother.

+ I liked Mrs. Toquet a lot and she made a pretty delightful godmother. I liked her as an eccentric old woman and the ways that she helped Ella (stealing the dress for the night) and wish they'd kept her simply as that.

+ I liked how the Charles/Ella relationship played out. I like that she fell for him before knowing he was a prince and that he fell for her before 'officially' meeting her. I liked that he remembered her from their childhood because her sad eyes have stayed with him his entire life. I like that they shared the same favourite place and that's where they met. I liked the shoe trying on scene. My main issue with their romance is that it really could have used a couple more meetings between them to fall in love before the ball.

+ Ella’s ballgown was impractical but also lovely and she looked beautiful.

+ I liked how she didn’t really know the dances and so you see her making small mistakes and watching the other dancers to figure out what to do. I also really liked how she was portrayed at the dance – uncertain and out of her element, wanting to leave to find the kitchen but unwilling to be her usual forthright self because of her unfamiliarity.

+ An aspect that I found interesting is that despite her dissatisfaction with her life she wasn’t actually that resentful of her step-mother/sisters. In fact the relationship between the four of them, while not friendly, also wasn't as a acrimonious as usual. They were still using her as a servant, they were cold to her but they weren't actively cruel in the ways of other versions.

+ I liked Kovin and his attempt to help Charles by trying to convince the Duke that Ella was an Egyptian princess. And that the Duke saw through it but was fine with the relationship.

+ Also at this point I’m going to have to accept that the dance/musical numbers in these older movies are simply not for me. I’ve liked a few but for the most part they’re boring. This one had a 10 minute dance sequence. I’m apparently not a ballet/dance person.
