Nikita 1x02 Review

I liked this episode.
• It appears that show is going to be making the Nikita/Alex relationship the centerpiece of the show and I am so there. Even if it’s not they are devoting a lot of time already to their relationship and it makes me really happy. I love how devoted they are, and how very protective Nikita is of Alex. I liked the flashbacks and I can’t wait to see more. I did find the fact that they had only known each other a year surprising.
When Alex said that ‘there’s nothing to live for, everyone I love is dead’ I was almost expecting a ‘we can live for each other’ moment but that would have been way too soon. It appears that they’ve both settled on ‘living for revenge’ as a reason but I really want that to have unexpectedly changed without them noticing – they still want revenge, of course, but at this point in the show they do love each other and are each other’s family and I would love if the show slowly had both of them realising that. Wow. I guess I’m actually already pretty damn invested in this pair. That’s kind of unexpected. I’m not shipping them but I love the idea of them as this completely loyal and platonic love duo of kickass. Oh, I really hope we get an episode with the two of them kicking bad guy ass together.
• I was expecting Nikita to tell Alex that she killed her parents at the end there. That would have been a fascinating turn of events and I really want it to be true. I mean how would they have gotten from that to where they are in the present timeline? That’s a story that would be fascinating to watch slowly unfold. I guess there’s still a chance that that can be revealed as truth since Nikita spent those first two years of freedom tracking Alex down. Oh, I hope so. If it is though I don’t want it to come out as a secret between them that causes a rift. I want to learn that Nikita told Alex that she was the one to kill her family under orders and see Alex work past that in flashbacls.
• I find that I am completely sold on Maggie’s Nikita and I think it’s because she is so different in many ways from Peta’s Nikita (who despite the movies will always be ‘my’ Nikita). Michael is... still completed. I can’t seem to help but compare him to Roy’s Michael and he is not coming up well. I need to stop that.
• I did love Nikita choosing to save Michael and their chase where once again he couldn’t shoot her. Michael unable to stand hearing Alex being beaten and rushing in to help her... I don’t know. On one hand I love it, on the other it’s so... not well-thought-out and emotional that it seems OOC. Except this Michael is not LFN’s Michael (and hell it’s been so long since I watched LFN that I could be remembering the character wrong anyway.)
• Oh, the show is so lucky that ‘The Inquisitor’ turned out to be Amanda. Between the time Percy called for her and she arrived I was building up steam all ready to be pissed off at how they yet again have made Amanda less than Madeline. I do wish however that we’d gotten to see some of Amanda the interrogator.
• Two things that were pointed out in reviews I read after the pilot have stuck with me and after watching this episode I find I agree.
- First, Division is very much un-ambiguous bad guy – doing evil things for money and power – and no longer under the control of the US government. I’ve discovered that I do prefer the ambiguous Section One to this straight out evil moustache-twirling terrorist-like Division quite a bit. It makes everything so much more nicely complicated.
- Second, the Division recruits are all so young. It’s like Division is doing all their recruiting out of colleges. Now it’s entirely possible that what we’re seeing is simply one group of new recruits and that Division separates everyone based on age, and so there are many more groups with older people as well, and we’re following this younger group because it’s where Alex is situated. In which case good and this point no longer bothers me but if it’s not true – it’s really rather annoying.
