The End in the Beginning

I loved this episode. I’d seen a few negative reactions to the episode which had me a bit worried but I thought it was fabulous. It was certainly different and an interesting choice for a finale but I find it interesting throughout and I was fascinated by the changes in between this new universe and the ‘real’ one. I love Aus so I suppose it isn’t so unexpected that I would love this.

- I’ll start with the short bit we got in the ‘real’ world – I really liked how this seasons ‘Booth in mortal danger’ played out so much better than last years. I preferred the set up last year (Booth being shot and how that whole scene played out) but the way they dealt with it in the next episode just did not work for me at all. This time we’re taking into an alternate universe that a post-surgery unconscious Booth dreams about and then we are given actual consequences when he doesn’t remember Brennan! I am actually really pleased about this. I wanted consequences. The question becomes just how much of his memory has he lost? Just of the past couple (four/five) years? His entire personal life? This opens things up for interesting new interactions next season and I can’t wait.

- One issue I do have with it though is that we are given a dichotomy that doesn’t really work in this final scene. On the one hand Booth asks Brennan who she is and thus implies that, well, he doesn’t know who she is. On the other hand he mutters to himself that ‘it seemed so real’ and thus implying that he remembers his ‘dream’ of the other reality and thus one would assume that in remembering that other reality he would remember Brennan as his wife, whom he loves deeply, and thus he would recognize Brennan. So how is it that he doesn’t recognize her? Because you can’t have it both ways. Actually it’d be kind of interesting if Booth remembered the other version of reality in place of the ‘real’ one and has to deal with all the ways in which it is very different – not married to Brennan and expecting a child, not owning a bar with her, knowing Cam only as his brother’s partner, and so on. I don’t think that’s the way the show is going with it but it’d be interesting.

- Hodgins does the voiceover and we learn at the end that what he’s saying is what Brennan is writing. And what he says, what she writes, is about loving someone and opening yourself up to them and she does it while she sits at Booth’s bedside. Has this made Brennan realise that she does love Booth, made her realise that she has already opened her heart up to him? It seems that way to me.

Okay that done moving onto the alternate reality or dream world that was most of this episode:

- At first I had wondered if we’d actually time jumped in the series itself. I thought the knocking was at their bedroom door and was expecting it to be their kid. My first reaction to figuring out that they were going completely Au was – “So going completely AU then? Cool.”

- I loved the Brennan/Booth. They were as fabulous as always and clearly showed that they can be a couple and be just as great as when they aren’t. It doesn’t have to ruin the show. I loved their relationship – loving, teasing, trusting and just so happy together. I found them completely adorable. I love that they don’t for a second doubt each other.

Brennan: Cam says that everyone thinks I’m a cold fish.
Booth: What you are is Iceland, cool to the touch but underneath you’re all volcano.
[He laughs, Brennan laughs slightly]

“You used logic on me, that’s sweet.” – Brennan smiling, Booth laughs. Aww.

“Should I be upset that everyone thinks that we’re murderers or happy that everyone is trying to help us get away with it?” – Booth. I vote happy and to just go with it.

- I loved Angela’s talk with Brennan that Booth’s head would explode (complete with gestures and sound effects!) if he knew that Brennan was in danger. I love that it is known by everyone, even Brennan, that Booth is crazy protective of Brennan, that he loves her enough to do anything to protector, that he’d freak out if she was ever in danger, and that the best way to hurt him would be to hurt her.

- I’m curious about how Brennan and Booth met if he wasn’t an FBI agent and she wasn’t a forensic anthropologist. Since Brennan doesn’t appear to be an author, that’s Hodgins role, where did she get all her money? I mean that was a pretty nice car she and Booth have. At this point they’re married but still calling each other Brennan/Booth – did Brennan keep her last name? I think she did. I love that. Actually Booth keeps calling Brennan ‘Bren’ which – aww. ♥

- Brennan was different and yet not really any more socialised then she is now and I’m curious about why. Clearly that part of Brennan wasn’t because of her parent’s disappearance (which as I always suspected considering she was 15 at the time) but I wonder why in this timeline she never became an forensic anthropologist. Did her parents not disappear, or did only one of them or did they disappear when she was a young child (still Hope) and she was adopted by another family? How did she end up owning and running a bar? I just have a hard time imagining her choosing to do that which makes me think it was Booth’s idea originally but then the bar does scream Brennan itself. If it was something they did together what kind of job did Brennan have before she met Booth? What did she take in school?

- We get Max but a very different Max who doesn’t seem to know Brennan and is a corrupt city councillor and that complicates things. If this is just Booth’s dream then it can be waved away and all you really need to focus on is what it means that Booth’s subconcious stuck Max in a role of not being Brennan’s father, of Brennan rejecting him, and him being a corrupting and unwelcome influence in his dream. Unresolved issues I’m thinking. But I prefer to think of it as an alternate reality so it presents some challenges. Clearly Max is Brennan’s biological father but how did they come to this point. I could see....hmm. Brennan and Russ are abandoned right at the beginning and are adopted by a loving couple – (the Brennans? Or they moved the kids last name ‘Brennan’ into being their middle and they actually have a different last name?) – their mother dies at around the same time and Max creates a new life for himself. Him being a councillor in her city and being so involved in her life would point to him knowing that she’s his daughter. Him constantly being on them to pay protection could be his attempt to help her. Except Booth supposes that Max is the Gravedigger and if he is I can’t see him trying to kill Brennan. Even if he did set it up but told Jared about it knowing his feelings for Brennan and that he wouldn’t let it happen it seems too much a chance for him to take. Hmm. ... Huh. He did seem to have something to do with Jared being discovered as the killed? Could it have been meant as a) a way to get a message across, and b) a way to get Jared away from the Brennan/Booth marriage? I think it’s clear that Brennan doesn’t know that Max is her father. It makes me want to read a fic in this AU wherein she learns the truth. I did find it interesting the Brennan was a lot less hostile to Max then Booth. They actually seemed to have a relationship.

- “You think that was insensitive?” – Cam
“I don’t know implying that she’s cheating on her husband maybe could have waited until he wasn’t standing right next to her.” – Jared
“Why? They bust up and you finally get a crack at her. It’s what you want right?” – Cam

I found it very interesting that they went with Jared having a thing for Brennan. It’s clear that he really does – killing to save her and then the fact that she was able to talk him down at the end – and yet he also has some sort of relationship with Brennan and Booth. Do they know about his feelings towards Brennan? Learning the truth about what he did would seem to indicate yes and yet Brennan’s ready to hire him to work at the club which has me wondering if she at least really understood. Booth I think knows. There was definite tension between Jared/Booth which seemed to be more focused on Brennan then on the case.

So why did they go with Jared having a thing for Brennan? And just how much of a ‘thing’ is it? Does he just want her or is he in love with her? When did it start? I really want to know the answer to this.

- I am happy that we did get a line of closure – that Caroline didn’t think Jared would be successfully tried without the coat (they destroyed/hid) or tying him to the gun. Like Brennan, I like the thought that he got away from it. I imagine that if he began working at the club it would be as a bouncer and I wonder about how awkward that would for him working with Brennan and Booth everyday while in love with her?

- Cam clearly knew that her partner had a thing for Brennan – how exactly? They definitely don’t strike me as close. They’re certainly not in the Brennan/Booth league of close (or any of my favourite partners). I mean despite Booth’s issues this episode in keeping silent about Jared killing the assassin I truly believe that if in the real world Brennan killed someone he would cover it up in a second. Clearly that’s not a position Cam has. But even beyond that they just didn’t feel like close partners. Maybe they’re new to working with each other?

- This Cam I think is the most changed. She really seems to have lost her compassion and openness and I wonder why. She seems – harder and harsher. I wonder if something went really wrong in her past. Something wrong enough to send her off into becoming a cop.

Angela makes sense as the hostess and Sweets makes sense as the bartender and Zach definitely makes sense as Brennan’s personal assistant as far as personality goes though how they got to these places not so much. Wendell as the silent and glare-y doorman was a little out of left field but I loved him having Booth’s back and being so loyal to him. Also he was hilarious in the interrogation scenes. The scene where he has Booth’s back – with a gun was amusing too. Clark being the rapper, C-Sink, who wants to perform at the club was sadly expected (him being the only black guy) but I liked it anyway. Vincent as the chef was fine, I enjoyed him, same with Fisher as the DJ though I kept getting them confused name-wise. I did love them both picking on Zach. I’m not entirely sure what Daisy’s role was – waitress/coat check girl? But I rather liked her too. Caroline as the club’s lawyer was perfect and awesome as always. Except for that part where she told Brennan/Booth that C-Sink might have a case if he sued them – in front of C-Sink! Bad, Caroline. Except not really because she was her normal awesome self everywhere else. I loved her non-team up with Max.

- I wonder about the detail of Booth having a soft spot for Sweets and immediately offering Vincent bail but then him having to be pushed into offering to bail Zach. Does he not like Zach? Is this a leak over from ‘reality’ and Booth thinking Zach is a killer?

- So Fisher/Daisy and then hints of Sweets/Daisy happening again and then Angela, most surprisingly, Angela kind of being into Sweets upon hearing him sing. I loved Hodgin’s reaction. Hee.

- Sweets having a band (and Daisy being in it) made me hee but especially Brennan, Angela and Clark’s reactions to it.

- I loved how protective of Booth and Brennan everyone was. That just rings so true. I loved Brennan pointing out – “They love us. Especially you.” I loved that they all in their own ways tried to protect them – by obstructing the investigation and destroying evidence. Heh. That they all kind of worked together and separately to do so and that they do love Brennan and Booth so much. Awww.

“Fisher says that Mr. B probably killed the guy to save you and we should do everything we could to impede the investigation. Was that wrong? It felt right.” – Daisy. Hee.

Sweets: Mr. B had the strength to bash the guy’s head against the wall and you have the...
Zach: ... clarity of will to shoot him.

I kind of love Sweets and Zach being all impressed with Brennan and Booth supposedly killing the assassin. It amuses me. Also it just fits who they are – naive-like, impressionable and very devoted to Brennan/Booth. Also I have to say I was pretty impressed with the reveal that Zach purposefully picked up the gun and then hid that behind his naive persona. He is not as naive as one would think. I mean sure he had his shoes stolen in jail (so perfect – of course he did) but he camouflaged his true feelings behinds his usual aura of naiviety and befuddlement and I am impressed.

- Strangely one of my favourite moments of the episode as actually the short scene between Booth and Clark’s gang brother in the interrogation room. Them talking all casually, making a deal and coming to an agreement complete with fist pump. I just really liked it. Like Clark’s brother is the leader of a gang but he loves his brother, and he tried to beat up Booth but they could still talk calmly and come to an agreement. The scene just worked for me.

- Booth: My brother killed a man to save my wife – what are we going to do?
Brennan: Do? Thank him and shut up.

I like that it is so simple to Brennan. He saved her life, the man he killed was a murderer and an all around bad guy. Of course they would protect Jared in turn.
