Bones 4x21 Review

Wow, I really loved this episode!
- “Definitely human and according to the orthodonture – American.” – Seriously? That’s stupid. How the hell can she tell? I’m sorry but there are in fact other countries with dentists and people with good teeth. God. Then Brennan later states – “The victim is American.” while looking at its teeth which is even more irritating because it’s Brennan. I’m just going to assume that she stated that because she already knew the bones where stolen from the States and not based on the teeth.
- “Well, the annual murder rate in Norway is 0.7.” – Clark. Less than one murder a year – that is impressive. So considering how the show started are we to assume that the show doesn’t think music equals violence? I loved Cam’s response to this – “In that case they should solve the ones they have or they’ll never get any practice.” Heh.
- Gordon being back on the show was a completely surprised and I was so happy to see him. It was excellent to see him back. I am not however sure what his purpose was in his first scene. He said hi, explained why he was there and then left. Was it just that he was in the building to see Sweets – is Sweets in the FBI building? – and popped by to say hi? I guess that makes sense.
- Huh. I’d actually forgotten about Sweets book on Brennan and Booth.
- Sweets: What about the sexual component in their relationship? Would you agree that they have both sublimated their attraction to each other out of fear of endangering their working relationship because their working relationship is paramount to both of them?
Gordon: Alas I’m afraid that I wouldn’t agree with that, no.
Sweets: Wow... which part?
Gordon: Well, everything you just said. Yes, one of them is completely aware of the attraction, struggles with it daily in fact.
I really enjoyed this exchange but I do wish that it had been made larger than just sexual attraction into romantic feelings because I think it is larger than just lust for them, it’s love, whether they know it or not, and I would have liked to have seen that addressed far more. I could take ‘attraction’ as being more than just the sexual and encompassing their feelings for each other as a whole except that Sweets started the exchange
- So Angela getting into the music. I suppose that out of all of them she’s probably the one I’d see most open to it. I wonder if this would affect Sweets crush on her? Actually I wonder if TPTB are planning on going in a Sweets/Angela direction? I think they could be good for each other in the short term and help both to grow in ways that they need.
- Gordon being a founding member of ‘Naughty Comet’ or in his words – “For three glorious years I wore spandex, silver lame, pancake makeup and played a guitar shaped like a shapeship. I was quite pretty in my own way.” – Hee. And I loved that Booth listened to his band and loved them. Then at the end – “My alter-ego: a bisexual spaceman with a taste for six-inch platform shoes, spandex, glitter and an exhibitionist’s disdain for underclothing.” ☺
- I loved Booth shooting out the speaker when they first went to speak to Spew. Heee. That was hilarious. Gordon’s expression made me giggle and the conversation between Booth, Gordon and Brennan afterwards made me smile.
- Sweets all dressed up in the makeup and clothing was unrecognisable at first. When Brennan said his name I was all confused for a moment and then I had a ‘holy crap’ moment. He looks... wow. Brennan didn’t appear to have arrived with Sweets but Sweets clearly knew that Brennan was going to be there. How?
- So what are those scars? Cuts? Whip marks? And how did Sweets get them? I’d kind of lean to self-mutilation considering his teenage involvement with death bands but the placement isn’t the best for him to have done it himself.
- Brennan: The evidence is inconclusive regarding your guilt (slams hands on table, yelling) But I’ll damn well make sure it’s conclusive!
Sweets: Whoa, what?
Booth: That a girl! Give it to him.
Heee. Brennan in the interrogation was kind of hilarious, kind of hard for me to watch. She sure has made some strides in her interrogation techniques. I loved Booth’s pleased ‘that a girl’.
- “So now you’re mostly alone in the world. They had time to save you. They gave you a good life and that’s why you believe that people can be saved by other people with good hearts. That’s the gift your parents left you. That and the gift of a truly good heart. That gives you a deeper calling.” – Gordon. I was not expecting Sweets background this episode but it worked so well – Sweets was adopted at age 6 by an older, loving couple, as a damaged child who’d been through hell (those marks, and on a six year old). They died recently, within weeks of each other. Oh, Sweets. I just wanted to hug him. He was projecting so much ‘kicked puppy’ in that scene. Excellent acting from JFD. I do ♥ Sweets. I am so glad how this episode ended for him.
Relatedly, that makes three of the Bones ‘Nakama’ who’ve had really bad, abusive childhoods. Although after those first six years Sweets clearly had a good childhood and was close to his (adopted) parents it’s left more than physical scars. I’m hoping that none of the others (Angela, Cam and Hodgins) are revealed to have had traumatic childhoods. It’d just be too much since it wasn’t through that aspect that they came together.
- “(snort) What are we: land of misfit toys.” – Booth. Heh. Also: yes. And I love all of them.
- I love Gordon making dinner for Brennan and Booth and them hanging out.
- Gordon: This book he is writing he’s using as a vehicle to get what he actually wants which is... a family.
Brennan: So he imprinted on us like a baby duck?
Gordon: He wants what we all want. He wants to find his place in the world.
Brennan: We can find a permanent place for him. Right?
Awww, Sweets wants a family. Although it has been fairly clear to me for awhile that he wants to be a part of Brennan and Booth’s group, to be one of them. I love that it’s now been stated out right and basically shoved in B&B faces, forcing them to act. And they choose to act by accepting him into their Nakama via dinner. Awww. I loved Brennan’s reaction especially – that she was all instantly about accepting Sweets (‘we can’) and that later she opens up to him so quickly. Booth too, though initially grumbling, headed off easily enough. I loved his “We’re going duck hunting.” Heh. Also I love characters imprinting on other ones (ie, Doctor and Mickey on Rose) so this works for me.
- “My foster parents locked me in the trunk of a car for two days when I broke a dish. I was a very clumsy child. They warned me it would happen but the water was so hot, the soap was so slippery... I still don’t think it was fair even though they gave me fair warning. (tearfully, looks at Booth) The water was so hot.” – Brennan. Oh, Brennan. The part that really got to me was her line about still thinking it was unfair even though they’d given her warning. Oh, Brennan.
- That last scene between Brennan/Booth (and Sweets but it’s all about B&B) was amazing and beautiful. ♥
I loved that all it took was a look from Brennan to make Booth softly make his own confession and that throughout the whole confession Booth looked into Brenna’s eyes and was obviously telling Brennan, not Sweets, and it was to Sweets not Brennan that he stated “that’s all I’m going to say on the subject matter.”
Then we get Booth’s so concerned “Are you okay, Bones?” and his expression when she puts his handkerchief in his pocket and then the way he touches where her hand had just been. Oh, Booth.
So I’m assuming that what Sweets got from the Booth/Brennan exchange, and what the audience was supposed to get, was that it’s Booth who knows that he’s in love with Brennan (or in lust if that’s what the show is going with)? Personally it’s seemed pretty clear to me for awhile now that Booth is aware of just how much he cares for Brennan. But now that Sweets knows maybe this will mean that we’ll get a Sweets/Booth discussion about it.
I love the way that Brennan and Booth bracket Sweets, each grabbing an arm, to escort him for his office and back to Booth’s apartment to join them and Gordon for stew.
