Hottie Of the Week: Mio. I remember finding her kind of scary/weird looking (her mouth is so wide!) and she still kind of is but I also thought she looked really great.
Funniest Moment: Not funny exactly but I was amused during the ‘special training’ scene by the fact that Luna is sitting there casually painting her nails while they were doing it.
Cutest Moment: Rei and Makoto smiling and moving along with Ami and Usagi’s song. I like that Rei has gotten to a place where she feels like she can show she’s having fun and doesn’t have to hide her enjoyment. It’s actually a well done and subtle ‘show’ of how much Rei has grown to trust them and how close they are. Plus it was just really cute.
Saddest Moment: …Usagi being turned on by her schoolmates at the end, I suppose. She’s so friendly and open and I really felt for her then.
WTF of the Week: Sailor Luna’s attack actually knocking the youma down and away when the Senshi’s attacks didn’t affect it at all. There is no way that she is that powerful. Please.
Coolest Moment: I loved Mars, Mercury and Jupiter showing up to fight the youma: already transformed, with no speeches, and just using their powers (no words just attacking). It’s exactly what I have been wanting from them all along and I loved it.
Best Senshi Moment:
Tie:
1) Mercury catching her Tamborine in a stream of water was very neat. I loved her using her power in a different way.
2) Rei catching the piece of paper with her chopstick was cool.
Best Senshi Interaction: Since I already used the opening scene I’ll say… I like Ami, Rei and Makoto (and Minako) working together in the background to protect their princess. It was small in this episode – agreeing to keep an eye on Mio and then agreeing that she seemed harmless enough at the end (though their tone and expression seemed to indicate that they weren’t convinced) but it’s an idea I love.
• I loved the Mamoru/Zoisite and Zoisite/Kunzite scenes. The first was interesting because Mamoru’s reaction while not friendly wasn’t angry either. The points both made – that he should stop fearing his past and if his past already informs all his actions what does that make him – made sense to me. I really liked Zoisite’s response “You are yourself.” I just love that sentence. The second was interesting for much the same reason. The anger that’s been so much a part of their interactions was much lessened from their previous encounters. I mean there wasn’t even a hint or a threat of Kunzite attacking or killing Zoisite! Kunzite’s final line was also interesting. “Perhaps this is also a form of loyalty.” We get our first glimpse of Kunzite’s grief in the past when the other Shitennou were killed and it makes this line seem sincere.
• Luna’s ‘special training’ at first glance seemed ridiculous and I found myself wondering if it was another sign of her losing it or if she was messing with them. But then thinking about it more it actually seems like a good idea. To succeed you’d need excellent hand/eye co-ordination as well as speed both of which are useful senshi skills.
• How did Ami, Rei and Makoto even know that there was a youma and how did they get there so quickly?
• The youma being so powerful seemed strange. The usual pattern is for the youma to gradually get more powerful and for the senshi to react to that by getting power upgrades. The youma getting more powerful because the Senshi have gotten power upgrades seems… wrong. I did really like this youma. She was very impressive looking.
