Covert Affairs 1x04 ‘No Quarter’: This was my favourite episode thus far. I was so sure that Eyal Levin was going to turn out to be a bad guy – all the way up to the police showing up at the crash – and I am glad I was wrong because I loved the Annie/Eyal interactions. “You’re going to have to start pulling your weight in this partnership; it’s only fair.” Heh. I’d love to watch the two of them as partners. I really hope we get to see him again. I’m also really enjoying the Annie/Auggie relationship. Joan/Arthur I am still eh about and I want more Anne and Sendhil. I thought the crash scene was excellent.
True Blood 3x07 ‘Hitting the Ground’ Review
• This episode didn’t get to a good start when Sookie did two stupid things that made me want to head-desk repeatedly in the first six minutes.
The first time was when she called out for help when she couldn’t wake Bill again. That was just so stupid. What the hell did she think that would accomplish? They’re right in the middle of the bad guy’s home! Oy.
The second time was when it appeared that Sookie was going to use her mind-reading ability to get the better of Debbie and instead decided to yell “Don’t think about it bitch!” at the drug-deranged werewolf with a gun who hates her. That was a big letdown. I, for the most part, love Sookie’s unwillingness to back down or compromise. Her bitch fight with Lorena at Godric’s was pretty awesome. This was just unbearably stupid. Debbie responded with “Oh, you sure picked a dumbass time to call me bitch!” and I was pretty much in complete agreement with her.
• The ‘dancing’ and skipping about during the Claudine scenes was really bad in a ridiculous and eye-rolling way but I loved the pool and the effect when they appeared and disappeared into it. Bill’s presence bringing darkness was also neat. I want to know more about this: “He will steal your light. Do not let him take it from you. Promise me.”
• Pam got only a few minutes of screen-time and for half of them she was chained down and being tortured but she was still awesome. I loved her being snarky with the Magistrate despite her pain. She remained her usual cool self throughout the whole ordeal. I liked her taunting the Magister when he was being tortured and I loved her little hand clap and smiling congrats to Russell and Sophie-Anne for their marriage.
• I loved the Eric/Pam scene so much! I loved Pam’s shaky ‘Eric’ when he arrived and how it caused him to react (it was enough to shake his calm face and he had to visibly collect himself). I loved that as soon as the other three were distracted by each other he took the opportunity to go to Pam. I loved his gentle hair touch and his “Are you okay?” and his expression when he asks (he is not calm and collected) and her little nod in response. I loved that during the whole scene he remains by her side and is seen in the background looking down at her most the time. I loved them reaching for each other after she’s freed and how their eyes are locked on one another. They are just so wonderful. We need more of them.
• I really enjoyed everything with Tara and Alcide. They really need to get together because they would be so good for each other. I think Alcide is exactly what Tara needs and I think she could be good for him too. Their scene in the truck where he tells her to take a breath was great. I loved their reaction to Bill after they found Sookie – Alcide slapping his hand away from Sookie, Tara kicking him out of the truck and then them driving off without him. Excellent. I didn’t realise until they were standing side by side in the hospital just how tall he is. He towers over her!
• Tara was great this episode. I loved her attacking Debbie and keeping it together and kicking Bill’s ass out of the truck and loving Sookie so much.
• Alcide is pretty excellent. I enjoyed him a lot this episode. “I’ll soothe it over.” That says so much about him.
• I think Alcide letting Debbie live is going to come back to bite him but I don’t see him acting differently. I also liked that we got an actual reason for why Debbie left him instead of her just being cheating druggie bitch. Instead Debbie was someone who wanted a child and couldn’t have one with Alcide. Of course it is so much more than that – she was cheating on him with numerous other werewolves (was she trying for a baby I wonder?), she left him for another man, she is a druggie and all those and other reasons are just as viable but I like that we got more.
• “The only vampire a vampire can trust is the vampire he made.” – Eric. Hmmm. I would have expected him to say ‘his maker’ since we know that he trusted Godric implicitly. I love the implication here that Pam is the only vampire he trusts (well, unless he has other progeny) and it’s certainly something that bears up based on their past behaviour. Tangential to this though is the fact that this episode starts with a vampire helping to kill his Maker. Of course the relationships are very different. Lorena was a bad Maker and Bill hated her. Meanwhile Godric was a good Maker and Eric loved him and was loyal for his whole life. Now we have Pam who is loyal to Eric, who is loyal to her, and I think they do love each other (he is a good Maker as well). I don’t think there is any worry Pam would betray Eric but I just thought it interesting. Since Godric’s dead and Pam is in danger I can see how she would be on his mind most. Also him saying this just before biting Hadley gives a nice implied threat.
• I was pretty afraid that Russell was going to kill Sophie-Anne so while I love that she didn’t hide her dislike for what was happening it made me worried for her. I don’t know how vampire politics and marriage works so I thought there could be a possibility that after they were married he could kill her and get all her land/property but it seems not. I’m glad because I’m enjoying her. I want her survive him. I kind of want her to win after everything she’d been put through now.
• I truly believe that Sophie-Anne cares for Hadley, if not loves her, so for her to be willing to let Hadley die to protect the secret of Sookie... I was actually surprised. She was clearly upset when he was biting Hadley and at one point it looked like she was going to say something but stopped herself. I was sure that she would break and tell him. They don’t let us hear ‘the truth’ or whatever it was Hadley, told him which could or could not be everything, but I want answers! I can’t tell from Eric’s reaction what he learned but he was definitely shocked (though he seemed just as shocked when he thought Sophie-Anne had confided in Hadley.) What did she tell him? I bet they’re going to tease us until the finale.
• The gender issues on this show seemed to be really shoved in my face in this episode. Lorena’s death, Sophie-Anne locked in a cage and forced to marry someone she hated, Hadley attacked, Sookie attacked, Tara dealing with her trauma... and sure we get male victims with the Magister and Coot and the random male werewolf but their pain did not seem anywhere near as lingered over by the camera as the women’s pain; not even the Magister. Plus the numbers just do not add up. When you add in how much it’s the men with the power – Bill over Sookie, Russell over Sophie-Anne, Eric over Sophie-Anne and Hadley, Alcide over Debbie, Magister over Pam – and again we have women with power as well – Debbie with the gun, Lorena over Sookie, it being Sookie who stabbed Lorena – but their power isn’t really near what the men have. Usually I can gloss but with this episode it was just too much.
• I didn’t hate Lorena so I wasn’t thrilled by her death. Still I knew it had to be coming and overall I’m pretty neutral about it.
• Jason continues to be full of fast-forward material except when he’s with Sookie.
• I don’t really care about Hoyt either anymore though I did catch Summer making her declaration. That’s not going to end well. If he actually does agree to date her, knowing that she likes him and he doesn’t like her, it’s going to make me dislike him a fair bit more (something I wouldn’t have thought would happen back in season one).
• Sam also mostly got fast-forwarded what with being boring and having dog-fighting. I did see and like that he let the dogs in cages go. I also watched most of his confrontation with his parents and I don’t think he’s seen the last of them.
