Originally I was going to do a top 10 but I kept running across more scenes and moments that I loved or that moved me. There are more still that I could add - Stefan/Caroline's lunch in 2x09, Stefan/Damon in 2x05, Damon/Katherine's slap fight/bickering in 2x16, Elena/Isobel in 2x17, and more - but this has already gotten really large and I've run out of time if I want to post it before the season premiere. For my first ever picspam I'm pleased with it. I learned a lot about screencapping including that it takes a lot longer than I originally thought.

2x01 The Return

Katherine: Hey Caroline. My name is Katherine. I was hoping you could get the Salvatore brothers a message for me.
Caroline: What are you talking about? What message?

Katherine: Game on.

2x02 Brave New World

Caroline: I'm a m-m-murderer. I'm a monster!
Stefan: Look at me, your emotions are heightening right now, it's part of the transformation, it's completely normal, I promise you okay?

Caroline: Why did Katherine do this to me?
Stefan: I don't know, I wish I did. Hey, hey. I promise you I will not let anything happen to you. Come here.

2x05 Kill or Be Killed

Mason: Does your mother know what you are? I’ll happy to tell her. Don’t be stupid! Necks snap easy around here
Caroline: I can take you
Mason: Wanna bet?
Caroline: Yeah. I do

Caroline: Told ya.

2x07 Masquerade

Caroline: I did it. I really didn't think that I'll be able to fool you but I did it.

Stefan: Hello Katherine.
Caroline: Goodbye Katherine.

Katherine: You don't really think that you can kill me with that now, do you?
Stefan: No, but he can.

Jeremy: Stop! You're hurting Elena! Everything you're doing to her is hurting Elena!
Katherine: You think you two are the only ones with a witch on your side? Wrong and something tells me that my witch is better than your witch.

A break in the list for 3 small moments of Katherine awesomeness:

1. 2x09 Katerina - Katherine is Her Own Sire

Elena: You killed yourself?!
Katherine: Klaus needed a human doppelganger. As a vampire I was no longer any use to him.

2. 2x09 Katerina - Katherine is the Safest Bitch

Stefan: Let me guess. You want to trade that stone for your freedom. You manipulative, psychotic bitch.
Katherine: My freedom? That’s where you’re wrong, Stefan. I don’t want my freedom. Because when Klaus shows up to kill us all, and he will, I’ll be in the tomb where no vampire will enter because they can’t get out. I’ll be the safest psychotic bitch in town.

I really love how Katherine always manages to make lemonade from lemons. She didn’t intend to be trapped in the tomb but hell if she’d ever let anyone see her sweat when she can make them squirm instead.

3. 2x20 The Last Day - Katherine will do What She Needs To

Klaus: I want you... to walk over to the window and stand in the sunlight
Katherine: But I'll burn
Klaus: You don't have a choice

There’s a badass in this scene and it’s not the man casually having fun torturing someone. It’s the woman standing in sunlight and burning to keep her secret.

There are other moments that come to mind when I think of Katherine and awesomeness - the revelation that she'd been ingesting vervain for decades or her little drinking and dancing scene in 2x20, for example, but they don't really cap well.

2x15 The Dinner Party

Elijah: The deal is off.
Elena: I'm renegotiating.
Elijah: You have nothing left to negotiate with.
Elena: (pulls out knife)I'd like to see you lure Klaus into Mystic Falls after the doppelganger bleeds to death.
Elijah: Stefan won't let you die.
Elena: No, he won't. He'll feed me his blood to heal me, and then I'll kill myself and become a vampire, just like Katherine did. So unless you want that to happen again, promise me the same as before... promise me... You won't harm anyone that I love. Even if they've harmed you.
Elijah: I'm sorry, Elena. I'm going to have to call your bluff.

[Elena stabs herself in the stomach. Elijah rushes over to her but he can't get in.]
Elijah: No! Yes. Yes, you can have your deal. Let me heal you.
Elena: Give me your word!
Elijah: I give you my word!

If I had to chose only one scene from season 2 this would be it. I love that Stefan and Damon were there, listening and waiting, and not interfering. I loved Elena - who is always negotiating, and who is willing to do what she needs to in order to protect her family. I loved everything about this scene.

Elena: You know, you guys want me to fight, fine, I'll fight. But if we're gonna do this, you can't keep anything from me anymore. From this moment on, we're doing it my way.
Damon: That seems fair.
Stefan: Okay.
Elena: Okay.

2x10 The Sacrifice

Elena: Stefan! Stefan!
Damon: Don’t you dare.
Elena: Stefan’s in here, Damon! How could you let this happen?
Damon: What are you talking about? I was too busy saving you from your crazy kamikaze mission!
Elena: You didn’t have to go after the moonstone in the first place!
Damon: It was the right call, Elena!
Elena: The right call? How would any of this be the right call?! Damon, let go of me! Let go of me! Please.
Damon: Are you done?

Damon: Stefan. Of all idiots plan… I’ll find a way to get you out.
Stefan: No it’s alright. ... Keep Elena away from here.
Damon: Yeah ‘cause that will be easy…
Stefan: Promise me. No matter what happens, you’ll protect her.
Damon: I promise.

Stefan standing out of sight listening to their fight was amazing. I love this scene.

2x06 Plan B

Stefan: You're staring.
Elena: I'm gazing.
Stefan: It's creepy.
Elena: It's romantic.

Hee. It's adorable.

2x06 Plan B

Elena: Caroline, Stefan’s down there and the chain is rusty. (Caroline goes to jump in.) No, no, no! You can’t, it’s full with vervein. Caroline, we’ve got to get him out. Now!

Caroline: I got you okay?
(Bonnie arrives)
Bonnie: What’s going on? You took off in a blur.
Caroline: I heard Elena screaming. Help her, now! Are you ready?
Elena: Yeah.

Caroline: Elena! Ready for you!
Elena: Hold on! I need to find the stone ... I got it. Come on, bring me up!

I love that Elena, even surrounded by snakes and freaking out, made sure to find the moonstone again. I also love the three girls working together and we really need more of that next season. Also you just know that Damon will be making Lassie jokes for decades.

2x13 Daddy Issues

Caroline: What’s going on?
Stefan: I was a little bit worried about you after everything you went through tonight
Caroline: I’m fine
Stefan: Good but just in case, I brought some back up

Elena: We’re gonna slumber it.
Bonnie: We haven’t done it in ages.

2x11 By the Light of the Moon

Tyler: Get out.
Caroline: No.
Tyler: Get out! I don’t want to hurt you.
Caroline: No, no.

Caroline: It's okay. Fight through it okay. Fight.
Tyler: Leave.
Caroline: No.
Tyler: Just go, please.
Caroline: No, not yet.
Tyler: Just go!
Caroline: Not yet. I’m right here and I’m not going anywhere.

2x11 By the Light of the Moon

Damon: Change of plans. (to Jeremy) You babysit.
Damon: (to Elena) Hey you know, you should get out, enjoy the sun. Oh wait, you can't.

LOL. Little, almost throw-away, moment but so adorable and fun.

2x12 The Descent

Rose: I’d like to enjoy the fresh air. Would you enjoy it with me?
Damon: For a while.
Rose: Thank you.
Damon: For what?
Rose: The pain’s gone.
Damon: I’m glad.
Rose: Will I see them again? My family?
Damon: I think you’ll see whoever you want to see.
Rose: That would be nice. Maybe I’ll see Trevor too. I’m not afraid anymore.

Rose: I’ll race you to the trees.
Damon: Well, you’ll lose.
Rose: I’m older and faster.
Damon: Oh, you think? Well, I’m compelling this dream. Maybe I’ll cheat.
Rose: On the count of three. One, two, three.

I think that this really is Damon at his kindest thus far in the series. Holding Rose, the dream of her favourite place from when she was human, reassuring her. This scene felt like Damon prematurely losing his Lexi. It was also very beautifully shot.

2x21 The Sun Also Rises

Jenna: Look around, Elena. I failed you
Elena: You didn't. I failed you. I'm so sorry. Listen. Being a vampire, it intensifies your guilt. But it also makes you stronger and faster. You can fight back. I'm gonna get through this. I'll be ok. I need you to believe that. Promise me, when you get the chance... Run

Elena: No, Jenna, no!
Jenna: It's alright, Elena. I know what I have to do.
[Jenna runs over to Greta and bites her. Klaus pulls her away and stakes her in the side.]
Elena: Jenna. (crying) Just turn it off. Jenna. Turn it off. You won't be scared anymore.
[Klaus stakes her]
Elena: No! Jenna! No, no, no.

Oh, Jenna. I have so much love for the fact that she didn't run, that she fought till the end as best she could. She would have been an amazing vampire. Also Elena always gets to me when she pleads with Jenna to turn off her switch.

2x22 As I Lay Dying

Liz: I don't understand
Caroline: I explained it to you once. But... I had to make you forget because I was so scared of what you might do. But now... I don't wanna lie. I'm not gonna be afraid of you anymore. And I don't want you to be afraid of me anymore. I'm still your little girl. (Caroline hugs her) It's me. It's me. Mom.

Caroline is so brave. I look forward to Liz knowing the truth.
