The Vampire Diaries 3x03 Review

This was an enjoyable episode.
• I loved seeing Katherine back. I guess I was assuming that we wouldn’t see her for awhile so this was such a great surprise. I loved her phones calls to Damon – her flirting with him because of course she would. I really want her to keep calling him, keeping him up to date about Stefan as they snark at each other. Also I love that Katherine is apparently stalking Klaus and Stefan and possibly working on a way to kill Klaus.
• Damon making himself at home in Elena’s bed really made me go ‘oh, Damon’. Someone really needs to teach him boundaries. And that the way to a woman’s heart is not through stalking. But the moment where Elena rolls over and cuddles against him was just – oh. For Elena it was so natural and clearly she was still mostly asleep and wasn’t quite remember what was wrong with her life and thought he was Stefan and it made me so sad for her.
• I loved the scene where Stefan steps into his closet and comes face to face with Elena. Their expressions...!
• I really hope that Elena's continued denial and the way she is basically just ignoring all the people Stefan's murdering is going to be addressed. Possibly by her having a complete breakdown? Hopefully it will involve her talking to Bonnie and Caroline, and perhaps addressing her whole "people die around me" angst (which maybe plays a role in her unwillingness to let go of Stefan?) Also the fact that at the beginning of the series random people's deaths mattered and now they don't make an impression (unless she loves them). I really want the show to address this.
• The revelation that witches can extend their lifetimes using magic is excellent. That could definitely explain why Sheila looked so young. More importantly it means that Bonnie can live for a long time which is awesome.
• Gloria was great. I loved how she just kept shutting Klaus down. I’m also wondering if she was friends with Rebekah because I'd love that. I'd also love if she played Klaus a bit in order to get Rebekah back (after all she could have just told him about the necklace.)
• I really want to know what the hell is up with the relationships between witches and vampires. Gloria didn’t seem pleased about seeing Klaus and Stefan but she’s working with them and she spent considerable time around them in the past. She likes Damon better than Stefan but won’t tell him Klaus’s plans because he’s a vampire.
• So ‘Original witch’ – is there just one or are there a group like the Original vampires? If it’s only one person could the Original Witch be the first Petrova/the person Katherine/Elena are the doppelganger of?
• That necklace really gets around, doesn’t it? Stefan falls in love with an Original who wears a magical necklace. Rebekah loses it, Stefan finds it and keeps it because it makes him feel something he doesn’t understand, an almost memory (perhaps of love or affection), he then gives it to Elena as his first gift to her. Something to protect her. Then she loses it, twice, and both times it’s Damon who finds it and returns it to her. I love it.
• “Thank you. I’d forgotten what it was like to have a brother.” – Klaus. So Klaus’s big scary scheme with regards to Stefan was ... that he wanted his friend back? I kind of really love that. Stefan and Klaus were best friends, close enough that they called each other brother! (Oh, Stefan, Damon, they love each other so much – okay, so this is Stefan calling Klaus brother but clearly this is also him trying to find a substitute for Damon.) This makes Klaus so much more interesting to me. I love that he basically put Stefan on standby and had every intention of returning to him.
• I like what we’ve seen of Rebekah thus far.
• I was definitely seeing Stefan/Rebekah/Klaus.
• So Rebekah got her necklace from a witch. The Original witch, perhaps?
• I actually really loved the flashback to Stefan, Rebekah and Klaus at the club torturing poor Liam. There was something about it that just felt so... vampire. They’re living it up in their own world, and humans are nothing, Liam is just an amusement, not a person. It was creepy and I loved it.
• I liked the twist that Stefan kept a list of names of those he killed not out of remorse but so he could relive killing them. I love every time TPTB show how Ripper!Stefan was so much worse than Damon.
• It looks like Klaus actually drags his ‘dead’ family members around in a truck not that he just happened to have them stashed in Mystic Falls. That makes much more sense. I miss Elijah. I hope Rebekah goes behind Klaus back and frees all her siblings because I want him back.
• I'm really pleased that Sebastian Roche is guest staring because as an actor I love him. Now who exactly is he? Clearly immortal – so vampire or maybe witch – and he’s hunting Klaus perhaps with Katherine as an ally. And whoever he is he’s scary enough that he has Klaus on the run. I can't wait to learn more. Judging by the themes of this show he's probably family - perhaps the father of the Originals? I wonder if Elijah was working with him, was on the run from him as well, or if they just avoided each other?
• Caroline’s life sucks so much sometimes. I hate when she’s kidnapped and tortured more than anyone else and it keeps happening to her.
• I did like that Bill clearly loves his daughter and that instead of immediately killing ‘the monster’ she’d become he was trying to save her. And he was so wrong and disturbing and wrong but he does love her. Hopefully he follows John’s path and learns to love his daughter for who she is because Caroline deserves that.
• Liz and Tyler saving Caroline was wonderful. I loved how gentle Tyler was with Caroline and I loved Liz sitting and watching as Caroline fed from a blood bag. How far they've come. And while I thought the final Tyler/Caroline moment was great as well I honestly wish that it had remained strictly a Caroline/Liz moment. I think it would have worked better that way – with Liz holding Caroline and comforting her as she cries about how her father hates her – and I would have found it far more moving.
• I wasn’t really pleased with Elena’s separation from Caroline’s storyline. That she never once even tried to contact Caroline. I realise that it’s probably only been two days but it bugs me. I really hope we get some Elena/Caroline scenes in the next episode.
• I can’t believe that Carol didn’t call Liz.
• Something I find interesting about the Founding families is the fact that the older generation was apparently indoctrinated into hating all vampires and yet none of the current generation knew anything about the supernatural world until it started affecting them. Did the older generation only learn about it when they became adults as well? Because I always felt like they knew from a fairly young age and if that’s true then it’s curious that none of them have done the same with their children.
• Was Gloria’s Bar Stefan’s back in the 1920’s or was he just a really valued customer? Because it seems to me that it was the former – Liam called it “your bar”, the way he was called Mr. Salvatore and treated by everyone, the fact that the ‘cop’ was asking him questions – and if that’s true I love it. It does make me a lot more curious about the Stefan/Gloria relationship.
• There were definitely some logic issues with the ep:
- Why the hell would Damon bring Elena with him especially considering how against it he was in the previous episode? He could have easily gone to Chicago by himself to check out the situation.
- How could Stefan’s apartment be so well preserved after ninety years? At first I thought it was an apartment he still used when in Chicago and thought it was great but nope. So it ends up making much less sense.
- Damon leaving Elena alone in Stefan’s old apartment was beyond stupid. Seriously?
- Klaus somehow not hearing Elena in the apartment – not her moving into the closet (her steps, the hidden door opening and closing) nor her breathing or heartbeat - is really unbelievable. Especially since the episode even shows us his superior hearing during one of the flashbacks when he hears the cops arrive.
