The Vampire Diaries 3x09 Review

Awesome episode. This was my favourite of the season and the only issue I really had was that there wasn’t enough Elena. (But then there is never enough Elena.)
• I adored the various plots and secrets alliances at play. Damon bringing in Bonnie and Katherine, Mikael not knowing it was Katherine, Katherine and Stefan conspiring to save Damon... the twists and turns of who-know-what, who’s-plotting-what, who-are-allies-or-not was excellent.
• The Elena/Rebekah scene was my favourite one. Elena giving her back the necklace and putting it on her was perfect. I was so caught up in this new shift in their relationship that when Elena dagger’d her I actually jumped. I was completely shocked. On one hand it makes me all sad because I was really digging Elena/Rebekah and they appeared to be actually bonding with Rebekah allowing herself to be vulnerable in front of Elena. But, on the other hand, it was so awesome! Because Rebekah couldn’t be trusted and Elena doing what’s necessary (even when it pains her, sometimes literally) always makes me happy. How is she is so amazing? She is the best ever.
• Stefan (with Katherine somehow involved, please let them be working/scheming together!) stealing the various Originals from Klaus was awesome. I am so excited to see where this goes – hopefully straight to Elijah being de-daggered in 3x10. In a similar vein I’m hoping that Rebekah gets de-daggered soon and takes after big brother Elijah and forgives Elena.
• Damon/Elena/Stefan = ♥. The three of them in the bathroom made me really happy. Damon and Elena putting together weapons, while Stefan tries on ties in the background, and the three of them talk about their plan to take out a powerful vampire and Stefan being snarky – I loved it.
• “Do you trust me?” - Damon
“Yes.” – Elena
I love how she doesn’t hesitate even for a second.
• Damon is sooo angry at the end and then you see his main reason – “we’re never getting Stefan back.” Oh, Damon. I love that his rage was because he saw this as confirmation that they really had lost Stefan. I love even more that he said ‘we’.
• “We’ll survive this. We always survive. Trust me.” – Elena. ♥ I loved this scene.
• “Then we'll let him go, okay? We'll have to let him go.” ... ‘until he comes back to us on his own’ is implied, yes? That’s how I read it.
• There was a lot of Katherine/Damon this episode, from both sides, and a really great Katherine/Stefan scene. I loved that Katherine finally said – “I loved you. I loved Damon too.” – and Stefan didn’t brush it off and it felt as if we were supposed to take it as truth. I’ve always believed that she did/does love them both so that was great. I really liked that whole scene between them with Katherine, of all people, talking about humanity and the necessity of letting yourself feel. Plus I was just really happy to have Katherine back, being awesome as she does.
- Then with Damon we had him comparing Elena to Katherine as a compliment, and working with Katherine/trusting her with the plan, him understanding/not being angry about her running away, and then during their phone call “Take care of yourself, Katherine” (!) He keeps insisting that he is over her and I have never believed it – I wonder if he might now be able to acknowledge that he does still care for her. Certainly his bitterness towards her seems to have lessened a bit. I can’t wait to see where their relationship goes next (especially when it eventually comes out that Katherine and Stefan interfered to save his life.)
• “It’s very Katherine about you. ... It was a compliment. Kind of.” – Damon. First, Damon comparing Elena to Katherine as a compliment was a bit surprising. It made me go ‘hmm’. Second, I personally love when Elena does things very Katherine-like or Petrova-like.
• I really liked the Elena/Bonnie scene. I liked Elena trying to reach out to Bonnie about what happened with Jeremy. I agreed though with Bonnie about Elena not understanding her anger and loved her “you shouldn’t have to be, he’s your brother”. It was just a nice little friendship scene. I did want Elena to call Caroline and sic her on Bonnie. She needs to talk to someone and clearly that someone should be Caroline.
• I actually liked Tyler vervaining Caroline in an attempt to protect her (even after she tells him to his face that she doesn’t trust him). But I also really liked that Caroline was angry about it and didn’t really let him off the hook about it because he may have been trying to protect her but it wasn’t his place to make that decision for her. I feel like their break-up was fairly well-done - I was sympathetic to Tyler's point but Caroline being unwilling to continue to stay by his side while he's pro-Klaus makes complete sense. I think Elena needs to host another sleepover.
• “Thank you my friend – you no longer have to do as I say. You’re free.” – Klaus. Oh, Klaus. He has it so bad for Stefan (romantic or not). He wants so much for Stefan to choose him, to be his BFF forever, and it kind of makes me feel sad for him.
• Oh, thank god for Bonnie. I loved her taking out Tyler and Damon with migraines. I was actually worried that Damon would actually kill Tyler (this is TVD). Also I was so happy that she was in on the plan. It dulled the irritation of Caroline being kept in the dark.
• “He fell in love with his ghost girlfriend” – Bonnie ...except not really? I still don’t buy that Jeremy was deeply in love with Anna and has loved her this whole time but even if you accept that as fact this still doesn’t work. He didn’t fall in love with Anna, he always loved her. What he did do was cheat on Bonnie with her.
• I wonder how the hell Matt – who wants nothing to do with the supernatural especially after ghost!Vicki and didn’t want to be with Caroline because she was a vampire – ended up agreeing to take original vampire Rebekah to the homecoming dance? Talk about out of character.
• So I guessed it was Katherine right from that first scene at the party. There was something just a little off I felt. Or possibly the show has gotten me so used to curly = Katherine / straight = Elena that I just subconsciously assumed.
• I loved Damon ripping the hybrid’s heart out. Also his look of horror and then worry for Stefan after Mikael drained him.
