True Blood 3x08 Review

For the most part I enjoyed this episode.
• I really liked the Sookie and Tara scene at the house. I loved them lying down together, holding hands. Even though I really want the two of them to support and be there for each other how it played out makes perfect sense for the characters and where they are right now. I still want that supportive bonding scene though. What I liked so much about the scene was that it wasn’t a matter of right or wrong – they were both right I think. Their points of view made perfect sense for who they are and what they’ve been through, and their opinions and stances were understandable.
• “I knew what he was the minute I laid eyes on him. I knew he was dangerous. And I ain’t going to lie - that was part of what I feel in love with.” – Sookie. I love that Sookie took responsibility. I love that she comes right out and says that him being dangerous was part of what drew her to him and made her fall in love.
• “I know what it’s like to be afraid of my own body. To not be sure what it’s going to do next. I’ve killed. I may not have cheated but I wanted to.” – Sookie. This is a large part of why Sookie’s point of view and unwillingness to just blame Bill and turn on him makes sense. It’s not just that she’s in love with him; it’s that she empathises with him. I like Sookie but she really does make everything about herself and I think this is more of that. I believe everything she tells Tara here and it’s not just her excusing Bill his actions – it’s her explaining why she feels a connection to him beyond the love and why she thinks they are so similar. She can forgive loss of control over your own body because she’s had to suffer that too.
• I liked that Sookie and Bill had such a mature break up. I did not like them having sex at the end. I really hope this doesn’t mean that they’re back together now.
• I loved that Sookie got to kick ass. Her fight with Debbie was pretty good. Did she really let Debbie live because of Alcide or was it because she couldn’t bear to kill someone else?
• A number of times over the series I have been very unhappy with Sookie’s lack of support towards Tara. I gave her a pass at the beginning considering she just got out of the hospital after almost being murdered by her boyfriend. I’d have loved to have gotten mutual comforting but I understand why Sookie wasn’t helping Tara through her trauma right then. The lying down and holding hands helped a lot even though as their argument over Bill kept going I found myself getting more annoyed that once again it was all about Sookie. I was all ready to once again give Sookie a black mark for being a bad friend when she tells Tara “I can see you’re in pain, let’s talk about it” and with just that little bit I was no longer mad at her. It’s a small thing – a show of concern, a show of interest in Tara and her pain – and I hope it becomes more but for now that was enough.
• “Good. Maybe you can flirt some sense into that girl cause logical sure as hell ain’t working.” – Tara. My first thought was: Aw, no Tara/Alcide then? It sucks a bit because you know Sookie/Alcide isn’t going to last but Tara/Alcide could be so good together. My second thought: yay, does this mean no more Sookie/Bill?
• “That’s Tara. She’s all bark… and she bites too.” – Arlene. Heh. Perfect description of Tara.
• I liked Arlene in this episode and I felt really sorry for her after her nightmare of Rene. It doesn’t excuse her lying to Terry but I wanted to hug her.
• I really like that when Tara has her break-down that it’s Sam who comforts her. I’d prefer Sookie but I can see why it couldn’t be her. Sookie is far too close to the situation, not to mention that she’s is partially the reason that Franklin came across Tara, and in the end despite what Sookie went through their talk proved that her and Tara are very much on opposite side of the vampire debate. Tara needs comfort and understanding and agreement but also some distance and Sam is perfect for all of that. Plus we get that background of their short relationship together and their friendship. It was a really nice see. I am really glad that Tara got to have that moment of comfort and being held while she cried. She got comfort from Lafayette which I also liked but she needed to cry and while he wouldn’t have been my first choice Sam was the perfect one.
• I liked the Lafayette scenes – his interactions with his mother, and then with Jesus and I’m happy that apparently the two of them are back on.
• “If I knew what was best for me I would have fallen in love with someone like you.” – Sookie
“Back at you. It’s too bad we’re so stupid, huh?” – Alcide
I like that between them it’s trust, friendship, like and attraction but TPTB are not trying to make us buy love. They are sweet together and kind of hot. I wouldn’t mind them getting together (though I still think Tara/Alcide would be better.)
• I really loved the Jessica/Bill interactions this episode. I wish we could have a lot more of this sort of thing. I loved her hugging him so tight and so long despite him not hugging her back (“I never thought I’d miss you but I totally did.”). I loved that she refused to allow him to basically abandon her and called him on the ways he’s been a shitty Maker - “Because you never taught me!” - because he has been and he needed to be called on it. I loved her - “I don’t want to be alone anymore.” I loved Bill responding to that (and her crying) by putting his hand on her shoulder and how she holds it and then hugs him and he finally holds her back. It was moving and touching and wonderful.
Then we get a different sort of wonderful later in the episode when Bill teaches Jessica to move fast like a vampire and the two of them play fight. It was fun and cute and just really sweet. I loved it. I also loved her encouraging him to be with Sookie and his sympathy for her own love for Hoyt. They were just lovely.
- That said: “He deserves to be with someone who deserves him.” – Jessica. Bill the correct response here is not ‘I’m sorry’! Oy. I was also really not pleased when after Bill discovers that Sookie is safe and well he decided to have sex with her instead of going after his baby vampire progeny whom he last saw running from a werewolf! Now she won that fight but we get no indication that Bill knows that. So him basically abandoning her to her fate really pissed me off. And everything had been going so well up until that point!
• I loved Jessica’s smile and finger wave “Hi” at the werewolf. ♥ That was adorable! Her chasing the werewolf out of the house – “Hey get back here.” – like it was a child or pet not listening made me laugh. Also? Adorable! Oh, Jessica. I love her. I’d wish for her to get her own storyline except it’d probably be all about her suffering in some way.
• I liked the Sookie/Hadley scene. I hope that we get more scenes between them.
• “… god, knows what he’s got on Eric…” – Sookie. This stuck out to me because it implies that Sookie does have some continuing faith in Eric. It’s not that he’d chosen to betray Sookie and side with Russell – it’s that Russell is forcing him. I just found that interesting.
• Jason remains boring though I actually did watch most his scenes. I did love how protective he was of Sookie and how he brought Andy over for Sookie to press charges. I’m also continuing to find Sam’s storyline boring.
• I do not understand what the hell Eric is thinking. I’m certainly not a tactical genius but how exactly is this not going to blow up in his face? He’ll undoubtedly be blaming this on someone else – the Authority, as a best guess (for punishment for the Magister) – but how is he going to explain how he wasn’t there to save Talbot and survived? What about all the guards who had to have known what the two of them were doing? As revenge it works well but I’d think Eric would be thinking bigger or at least interested in completing his revenge in a way that doesn’t have a big chance in ending in his death. He was also off by being so obvious in his attempts to protect Sookie that Russell noticed. I’d have expected a lot more subtlety.
