Dream On

I liked this episode.

• So apparently I really do like Jesse and Jesse/Rachel now because I was happy to see him again and when he indicated he and Rachel were still together, even though he clearly broke up with her the last time we saw him, I found myself willing to just go with it. I was finding that first scene very sweet especially this exchange: “I thought you’d never come back.” / “And miss al your drama? Never.” – which actually felt sincere to me. And all of that was before we got his scene in the car with Shelby where we see him at the most sincere we ever have. When he tells Shelby “I think I kind of like her. I don’t want her to get hurt.” I actually believed him.

- I’ve been wondering about him breaking up with her and how it worked with what I thought his goal was (Glee spying) but now I wonder if maybe she really did hurt him? Also from that scene he mentions that he thought befriending/seducing Rachel would be a good acting experience and now it kind of all makes sense – when we first met him he was ‘acting’ and the longer time has gone on the less acting he’s done. Now that I do like them as a couple I’m glad that he does seem to genuinely like her and while I’m doubtful they’re going to last at this point I actually wouldn’t mind him sticking around for next season.

• My favourite part of the episode was the revelation that Jesse meeting Rachel and switching to McKinley had nothing to do with Glee but was actually all about Rachel personally and is Shelby’s way of getting around the contract she signed so that she can meet her daughter. I never considered anything like that and I love it so much. Oh, I so hope that’s all it is. I wonder what Shelby thinks though about Jesse dating her daughter?

• The scene in the car between Jesse and Shelby where she opens up to him was lovely and I felt for her when she confessed she only had one regret (and especially when she talked about giving birth to Rachel and not being allowed to hold her). I’d already seen the Rachel/Shelby duet on YouTube and I love it just as much as the first time I watched it. I’m once again struck by how much alike they look. It’s some really excellent casting because I can completely buy them as mother and daughter.

• It was pretty convenient for them that Rachel actually wanted to know about her mother and said so with very little prompting from Jesse.

• After the last episode it was really weird not to get a Finn reaction to Jesse’s return and continued boyfriend status with Rachel. I mean he sang Jesse’s Girl at her? A reaction was warranted. Sigh. I’d like to think I just missed it but with this show... it’s one of the more disappointing aspects of it.

• All the Tina/Artie stuff was wonderful. I’m not really invested in either of the characters but it was a well done storyline and I really felt for both of them throughout though especially Artie. I was going to specify a specific moment above others I felt for him but really the whole episode was full of them – the ones that stuck out most were him sitting in the mall after his fantasy dance, his reactions when Emma destroyed his hope, after Tina left him in the hall and when Tina picked Mike to be her dance partner and then they danced.

• I liked how Quinn reached out and touched Artie’s shoulder during the final song.

• NPH was great and his sing off with Will at the theatre was good but I don’t really have anything specific to say about him. Oh, I did love his scene with Sue.
