I spent all day watching pilots.

Haven 1x01 ‘Welcome to Haven’:

- I was not very impressed with the acting when the episode began. The scene between Audrey and her boss was kind of painful and by the time she met Nathan I was already to write the show off. But then it made me laugh – “What am I going to do pull out another gun?” – and after that I found myself more open to enjoying it and the acting seemed to get better. By the end of the episode I’d decided to keep watching. I love the concept of supernatural abilities and I love the mystery of who Audrey is, who her boss is and what exactly is all going on.

- Character-wise I liked everyone though I didn’t love anyone. I like how snarky and collected Audrey is. She reminds me of Olivia in how she keeps her calm in freaky situations. The Audrey/Nathan partnership that seems to be brewing is nice enough and I liked the Audrey/Duke scene on his boat.

- I am hoping that we’ll get more female characters.

- I’m curious about why Audrey didn’t go and ask Chief Wournos about the picture since it had been his case and presumably he’d have an idea of who the woman (and kid) in the picture was.

- I was so sure that Duke was going to turn out to be Nathan’s no good brother and I was surprised when the show didn’t go in that direction.

- I like that the two accidents that Audrey ended up in weren’t her fault – though I’m curious about why she was still standing out by the Duke’s boat at night.

- My only issue, beyond the lack of female characters, was how the final Audrey/Conrad/Maryann scene played out. “She needs someone to keep her safe. And more importantly calm.” That just rubs me the wrong way. Like there’s this implication that she needs a man to help control her powers. I‘d have liked it better if it was about her needing support as she dealt with both the betrayal and the realisation of her powers.

Conclusion: I’ll keep watching. It could be fun and I like Audrey, the mystery and the abilities.

Rizzoli & Isles 1x01 ‘See One, Do One, Teach One’:

Not... bad. It was okay.

- I thought the show was going to be about both Rizzoli and Isles, hence the title, with both of them being co-leads but, at least with this episode, Rizzoli was definitely the main character. We follow her POV throughout the entire episode and don’t get any for Isles. That could just be this episode and future ones may have them switching off POV status which I think would be better. Considering that the title is both their names they should both be the stars.

- I like the friendship between Jane and Maura but the scene in the guest bedroom made me kind of meh. I don’t really have a handle on their relationship like how long they’ve known each other or how long they’ve been friends. In some ways it seems like they only had a professional friendship up until this point but then in other ways it seems obvious that they’re close friends. Like, on one hand Jane went to Maura’s house but on the other she didn’t even know about the tortoise pet which seems to indicate she’d never been there. I don’t know.

- The relationships Jane has with her former partner Korsak and current partner Frost were well drawn, especially the former, and I liked them.

- I liked that Jane saved herself.

Conclusion: I’ll probably watch the next episode and see how I enjoy that.

Covert Affairs 1x01:

- I caught bits of bad reviews for this show but it wasn’t bad. It does weirdly keep hitting my embarrassment squick. Specifically Annie hits it a lot, far more than Sydney Bristow ever did, and I think it’s a combination of her being new/untrained and her habit of talking too much. The opening scene with her taking the polygraph kept making me wince. I hope she gets her habit of over-sharing under control. Other than that I liked Annie and though I don’t love her I don’t love any of the characters.

- I liked the shoes she chose to wear on her first day, the simple seeming professional black pumps except for the fact that they were hot pink on the bottom. That added a layer to the character I liked.

- I liked Auggie for the most part and the Auggie/Annie friendship that’s growing. I am wondering if it’s supposed to be a ‘him as the only friend/person she can trust’ situation or if he’s only pretending to be her friend to stay close to her.

- I liked her interrogation scene with the FBI agent.

- It was nice to see Anne Dudek again even though she didn’t really have a lot to do. She was looking really great. Her current hairstyle – longer, darker and curlier than when she played Amber – looks fabulous and suits her much more.

- I liked the line about the CIA encouraging inter-office romances because they like to keep everything in house. It’s different from the way it usually plays out.

- On the ‘didn’t like’ side of things the Joan/Arthur relationship isn’t working for me especially with how Joan is being portrayed. I didn’t like that bit about Auggie knowing who is attractive based on how other men react.

Conclusion: I’ll watch the next episode.

The Glades 1x01 ‘Pilot’:

I am mostly meh.

- I understand where they’re going with the character of Jim, in fact it’s kind of hard not to since there are so many of that character type on tv, and that is one of the problems. I know the character type and I have seen it done much better. I was finding myself more annoyed at Jim then charmed by him. This is really the big thing because the show rests on him and... I kind of find him irritating.

- The Jim/Callie meeting/getting together thing did not entirely work for me. I liked his interactions with her son Jeff but how they got to the point where they were hanging out didn’t work so well for me. It wasn’t as amusing as I thought it would be. Also I keep getting this sexist vibe, not anything overt, but there all the same and it bugs me.

Conclusion: I’m on the fence. I may or may not watch another episode. Even if I do I’m pretty sure this is destined to be a show I forget about eventually. I probably won’t even bother to see if it gets better.

Huge 1x01-1x03:

- I almost didn’t finish watching the first episode of this show. In fact several times during the first episode I considered just not watching more and that is because this show really hits my embarrassment squick. In every episode there are a couple scenes I have to fast-forward through.

But beyond that this is actually a really good show. It feels very... real. As in the situations and the characters feel very realistic. The storyline in ep 3 with Alistair and body odour made me wince, and Becca’s bit about being too shy and hesitant really resonated with me.

- I like the characters. I like that it’s an ensemble and we get to see the different sides of a lot of the characters. I like the Will/Becca and Will/Ian friendships, and Chloe/Amber. I like the Will/Dr. Rand interactions.

Shipping-wise I don’t really have any pairing but I like the ideas of Will/Trent and Will/Amber. Maybe Will/Becca a bit.

Conclusion: I’ll be watching the rest of the season.
