9 Crimes
This episode was divided between the parts I enjoyed (Sookie/Eric/Lafayette), the parts that were boring (Jason/Sam) and the parts I hated/were disturbing (Bill/Tara). The good parts of this episode were so much better than anything in the previous episode but the bad parts were pretty terrible. Still the good parts were awesome enough that I enjoyed this episode a lot (this is after all why there is fast-forward.)
• Eric hallucinating/dreaming of Sookie was interesting. I was sure that it was Sookie having another dream, and was thinking that Sookie has the best dreams, when it was revealed to be Eric ‘dreaming’ and I don’t know what to think of that.
Is this because of the blood bond? It has to be, right? But this can’t be how it usually works, rather something specific to Sookie and what she is, because if this sort of connection happened to the vampire with every human they fed their blood there is no way I can see any vampire being willing to provide blood. Letting go of that much control wouldn’t be an option for most especially if they had given blood to multiple humans. Eric has been shown to be very free with his blood and there definitely would be no way if this is what usually happens. And he hasn’t even drunk her blood yet. Yikes. If she has this much power over vampires when she has a one way blood bond with them than it must be so much more once they drink her blood. Poor Bill never had a chance, did he? We never saw his side of things but despite Eric wanting to be special with regards to Sookie I don’t think he is which means Bill also had vision/dreams of Sookie. I wonder if Sookie is the ‘vampire’ for vampires? This dream of Eric’s was very much like the dreams Sookie (and I assume Lafayette) have of him so it’s kind of like vampires react like humans do towards vampires when connected/around Sookie. Which is interesting.
When I thought it was Sookie’s dream I thought it interesting that she subconsciously appears to want to impress Eric but since its Eric’s dream does that mean he wants to be impressed by her or already is? Beyond it showing that Eric wants Sookie, that he wants her to want him and pick him over Bill (‘Bill isn’t who she was looking for’), I do think that it also shows that subconsciously Eric wants Sookie to know him. She tells him that he “smells like the ocean in winter” (while Bill ‘doesn’t smell like anything’ and once again he wins over Bill) and then that he “played by the north sea as a child”. Their interactions weren’t about sex/lust though the lust was definitely there. It’s about connection. He wants her to know him as perhaps only Godric ever knew him. I love it. Oh, also I love that in this dream Sookie is very much in charge and the aggressor instead of Eric ravishing her or something. It’s too bad that it wasn’t real
- It really got to Eric though. He was visibly affected by it and had to leave the room. Was he upset that the dream happened at all (and was it the first time?) or was he upset what it revealed about him and his desires?
• Sookie looked awesome with the short black hair. That is a hair style and colour that AP should definitely look into getting. The leather pants and corset top (which in itself was nice) and the tattoos were definitely a different look than what we usually see but I liked it. My biggest regret is that Eric and Pam, especially Pam, won’t get to see her in this get up. Their appreciative reactions would be excellent I’m sure. Maybe Eric will be the one to save her in the next episode, we got Bill reacting to her panic/fear which means Eric felt the exact same thing, and so he at least could get to see it. Unfortunately I don’t see any way for Pam too.
• I liked the Alcide/Sookie interactions. I liked that exchange between them about her telling him he’s hot and him explaining that werewolves run hot. He’s comparing to normal humans but she’s comparing to vampires because that’s all she knows.
• The Pam/Eric scenes were amazing. I loved them. I love that this episode clearly showed, for possibly the first time, the depths of the connection and love between the two of them. She called him to warn him to run away while he still could and he instead went back to try and save her. I loved his expressions and her expressions during the basement scene and the constant eye contact between them. I loved that he was so obviously terrified for her.
• Pam is so freaking awesome. She was being tortured and screamed out Bill’s name like it was the truth. People who rely on torture tend to believe whatever ‘truth’ they get from it and the fact that Pam had the will and smarts to scream it out while in incredible pain was awesome. It’s that she said it right then as if she could no longer keep the secret that sold it as truth. Oh, she is so very smart.
• “They say the loss of a child is the deepest of despair.” – Magister. I wonder if Pam’s death would cut as deep as Godric’s did? We haven’t seen any other children Eric has made so maybe Pam is the only one? Even if she isn’t she is still with him and it’s clear that they have a very close relationship. I’m thinking that Eric modelled his relationship with her on his own with Godric. He has to be a good Maker to have instilled so much loyalty in Pam.
• I loved the Eric/Lafayette scenes. Eric saving Lafayette was pretty awesome. Also I loved this line: “Bossman have you seen this face? It ain’t nothing but art.” and the fact that Eric was teaching Lafayette.
• Sam hiring Jessica was great. When he promised Sookie to look after her he really took that seriously. I wonder how his customers feel about having a vampire work there? It’s interesting to see the change in Sam’s attitude towards vampires from the beginning of the first season to now.
• At first I was mad and irritated with Sookie being so selfish and her using Debbie, and what Sookie had learned about her, to get Alcide to go back to the bar with her. She was manipulating him to get what she wanted. But on thinking about it more I’ve decided it doesn’t bother me anymore. Yes, she was blatantly manipulating him to achieve her goal but what the hell is wrong with that? Did it just irritate me because she’s a woman? I thought about that for a bit and decided that that wasn’t the reason but rather because she acted like it was about him and Debbie to any degree.
But then how else was she supposed to act considering she was manipulating him? She has a goal, she learned something that could help her and she used it. Good for her. Even then considering the scene between Alcide/Debbie/Sookie at the bar I think a part of it was about Alcide getting Debbie back. Again it might only be for selfish reasons – if he could get Debbie back than maybe it’d give her hope about Bill – but there was sincere caring there along with the manipulation. I think that’s what threw me. It wasn’t just blatant manipulation and so it felt like she... didn’t realise she was manipulating him and was playing all innocent and so it bugged because she so clearly was doing that. But I think I read it wrong on first watch because she both knew she was manipulating him and was doing it on purpose but was also sincere in what she said. I’ve decided I like it.
• Jason continues to be fast-forward material. I didn’t really watch any of his scenes this week. I think the biggest issue here is that I find most of the situations he finds himself in so embarrassing that I can’t watch. Every time he’s on screen I feel the need to be ready to fast-forward past him.
• Sam’s storyline is also continuing to be boring. I did like Sam’s talk with his brother and there could be some potential in them bonding.
• The show has really ramped up on showing the horror of vampires this season and I’m curious about why. We’ve seen them being horrible in the previous seasons but it’s like they’re ramping it up to ten. The Bill storyline is horrible and gross. I should probably feel sorry for Bill at the end but mostly I feel sorry for the girl. The whole Bill/Lorena thing is... ew and it really makes me like him so much less. He hates her, I get it. But that does not excuse how he acts with her.
• Tara’s storyline is not at all I was expecting. I thought she was going to be getting into a bad romance to deal with her post Eggs grief and despair but this is not that at all. There is no romance in this, not even of the bad type. This is a stalker kidnapping someone and then calling it a romance. It’s just not. I don’t know if it’s better or worse. At least with the way I thought it was going it was about Tara acting for herself even if it would have been in a negative and harmful way.
On the other hand this way definitely won’t have her falling in love (or it had better not) and having her heart broken again. Yay? God, poor, poor Tara. I don’t know which part of the episode was the worst part. Her phone call to Sookie where she said what he said (and whoa Midnight flashbacks) was pretty horrible. I have this thing about people forced to betray/hurt the ones they love and her horror during this scene really got to me. But honestly all of it was the worst part. It’s all so creepy and scary. Her life sucks so much and it’s beyond ridiculous.
... Oh. Idea! She’s now at Russell’s mansion, where Bill is staying and where Sookie is heading for. So let’s say Sookie rescues her and she meets Alcide. Then Tara and Alcide can bond over broken hearts and fall in love and be happy together! I like it. He’s a good guy, and really hot, and after all the complete crap she has had to deal with in her life she deserves that.
