Hidden Figures and Proud Mary Thoughts

I liked it.
+ I loved how actively both Dorothy and Mary were in trying to reach their goals. I particularly loved that Dorothy not only taught herself programming to get ahead of being fired for being obsolete but that she then went and taught all her fellow West Calculators how to program as well and then refused the job without them. Loved it. I wish we’d gotten more focus on Dorothy.
+ I liked how Mary used the judge’s ego to get him to rule that she could attend the all white-school night classes and loved her blasé attitude when she arrived. Also her friendship/mentorship with Karl was lightly sketched but nice to see.
+ I liked the friendship between the three women. A small moment but I loved when Katherine walked out late that first day and found both of them waiting for her, and the relief on her face.
+ I feel a little weird about it since this is a biopic but I was kind of shipping Katherine/Ruth for some reason. I don’t know why they made such an impression since Ruth was very much a background character and they didn’t have that much interaction, but I did. I loved Ruth’s ”Absolutely. And she speaks” to Harrison and her smile when Katherine immediately surprises him by knowing her stuff. It was a little thing but it made me pay attention to their interactions after that. Like their tiny shared smiles after Harrison knocks down the bathroom sign was lovely. And I loved Ruth’s “You did good work around here, Katherine.” This movie hits too close to RPF for me but if I read fic I kind of want this utterly random pair.
Or maybe Katherine/John Glenn post-movie. I really loved the instant respect he showed to all the calculators, that he believed so strongly in Katherine and that he never hid his admiration for her. I really liked when he made a joke during the meeting to take the focus off her.
Proud Mary
This wasn’t what I was expecting. It was a lot slower especially in the beginning; I guess I was expecting something like John Wick. Overall, it was okay.
+ The best part was the Mary/Danny relationship which I loved. They had a lot of lovely little moments and the build of them caring about each other in such a small time frame was really well done. I absolutely bought everything about it. I loved their reunion at the end after she kills Tom.
+ Mary was very competent and kickass, and looked great doing it.
+ Mary’s relationship with the family, with Tom and Bennie, was almost enough to hit my id but unfortunately missed. I really needed Mary to be more into Tom, for Tom to be less of an asshole, for Bennie to be less ‘I own you’, just for their relationships to be more complicated with her still having positive attachments to them. She and Tom made a good team too which just made their relationship all the more disappointing.
+ All of Bennie’s men at the end – does she seriously have no attachment to any of them?
+ Considering how many people Mary has killed she has absolutely killed people with children before. I guess out of sight out of mind?
+ I think I’m shipping Mary and John Wick now. They can meet up and have a peaceful life with their kid and dog, and no assassinating.
