I Gotta Right to Sing the Blues
This was an okay episode.
• The best part was Tara (and Sookie) being awesome. Tara has such a horrible couple days and when she contacted Sookie mind to mind – “Sookie. Don’t worry, Sookie, I’m going to get you out. Wait until the sun comes up. I’ll find you. Be ready. ‘Cause we’re going to need all the luck in the world. But I’m going to get us out of here. I am not giving up without a fight.” – I did a little ‘fuck yeah!’ And then the beginning of their escape played out as well as I could have hoped with Tara conning the werewolf and then Tara and Sookie taking him out. It was fabulous.
- It became a little less so when Sookie went back to being all about Bill and they split up and then Tara ran off into the woods exactly like she did the first time instead of looking for a vehicle like she’d told Sookie. On the plus Tara got her luck in the form of running into Alcide. I wonder what the chances of them actually getting together are?
• The worst thing here is that Tara used the mace on Franklin, bashing his head in very well, but you just know that he’s going to survive it. I was all ‘chop off his head!’ This is definitely going to come back to bite her. Poor Tara.
• Eric playing politics perfectly was great. Though his smile when Russell entered the study was creepy and wrong and I can’t believe Russell didn’t feel it too. Eric purposefully creating a rift between Russell and Talbot is great and I can’t wait to see what TPTB do there.
• I like the scene with Sophie-Anne. I liked her sulking and “God damn it.” when she realised that she was beaten. I hope though that there is more to it than this. I’d love if it turned out that Eric and Sophie-Anne were working together secretly. I did find it very interesting how she was immediately all about Hadley and her final lines were her wailing “Hadley. I want my Hadley!” as Eric carried her out. Even though Hadley shares Sookie’s blood, just like Jason, I was under the impression that she didn’t have any abilities (like Jason), and that even the pow, as it were, of her blood is less, and yet Sophie-Anne is very attached to her (and perhaps even loves her).
• “It thinks were equals.” / “Well, it’s wrong.” / “Indeed.” This little exchange between Eric and Russell is very interesting because I think to a degree they are actually right though not in the way they mean. I haven’t read the books and though I know about the faeries I don’t know anything about them except that Sookie has Faerie blood and that’s the source of her powers. What I find interesting is that vampires (and Maenads) know nothing about Faeries. Does this mean then that Faeries don’t actually live in the same world as everyone else? Like, do they have a Faerie realm? If Sookie with her diluted Faerie blood is already catnip to vampires I can’t imagine how they’d react to a full-blooded faerie but I am pretty sure that they are not the top of the food chain as Russell thinks.
• I know that the show and the books are different in a lot of ways and Alan Ball is OTP about Sookie/Bill but I do want the show to follow the books more in this regard. Sookie didn’t learn any details about Bill’s ‘Sookie assignment’ but she did learn enough that I hope it’s brought up again soon and that there are consequences. The way Sookie brushed off Bill willing to let Tara die irritated me so much. But if she’s willing to brush off everything Bill did as ‘he had to’ it would be nice to see the same attitude applied to Eric. Eric was keeping it together this episode – and “Please don’t take this the wrong way but shut up. (covers her mouth) Thank you.” made me laugh – but he definitely seemed affected when Sookie told him that she hated his guts and would pay him back. Eric attitude/behaviour towards Sookie in this episode actually reminded me of Sookie in the last episode with Alcide a lot and specifically her line “I had to be mean to make you listen. I’m sorry.” There is a lot going on and Eric is in a very precarious and dangerous situation and he’s now found himself in the position of having to be mean to Sookie in order to keep some control. I just hope this doesn’t destroy things between them.
• I felt horribly sorry for Lorena this entire episode. When Sookie threatened to kill her if she killed Bill I actually was more on Lorena’s side. I mean Sookie’s known Bill for what – five months at most? Meanwhile, poor Lorena, who has known and loved him for so long, who made him, who thought until recently (however deluded it was) that she could get him back being forced into the position of having to kill him – ouch. Her devastation through that whole first scene was so obvious and that continued into her later scenes. I found myself feeling sorrier for her than I did for Bill whom she was torturing. Bill is totally not worth the pain she was in.
• With the dog fighting revelation Sam’s storyline looks to becoming even more fast-forward material than usual.
• Jason remains boring though I did like when Crystal stated that she wasn’t a virgin his response was to say he wasn’t either.
• Lafayette/Jesus was pretty nice, and for a moment there I actually thought Lafayette would get to be happy. Sigh.
