I’ve heard about this book numerous times from multiple sources, mainly a lot of squeeing, but I have read a lot of happy reviews for other books that I haven’t liked so when I requested it from the library I only requested the first book. This was a mistake. I loved this book. When I finished it I immediately wanted to read the next one.
- From the very first chapter this book drew me in, and it made me like and feel for Katniss. I knew there was little to no chance of Katniss not being the victor at the end of the book but that in no way detracted from the story. The journey is definitely what it is all about and it left me glued to the book throughout.
- I loved Katniss. My favourite character of the series.
- I loved Rue and Katniss’s connection to her and even though I knew that only one could survive it still shocked me when Rue was killed. Rue’s death scene was one of the best parts of the book. I can’t wait to read about Katniss’s visit to Section 11.
- The set up to the games (the first 150 pages or so) were very interesting and I never once wanted to just get to the games themselves.
- Katniss’s confusion over her feelings for Peeta and Gabe was well done.
- One thing that I am most intrigued about is the mockingjay pin Madge forced on Katniss. Katniss doesn’t realise it at all in the book but there has to be something special about that pin. My guess is that it’s a secret signal that she is a resistance child – and thus a symbol of who other resistance fighters throughout the districts should sponsor? Well, that’s my theory. The fact that Madge was wearing it just in case makes me sure that it has some meaning. Her dad is a mayor who is very lax about enforcing rules and punishments and I could buy him as a secret resistance fighter. I really hope it comes to mean something.
- One thing I loved about this book was that they managed to make the idea of the next book so exciting even thought the games are now finished. The danger to Katniss is actually even more now and I am impressed. What I think Katniss should be worried about, if she doesn’t bring everything down in the next year, is that Prim will once again be picked as District 12 Tribute. TPTB hate Katniss now and want revenge and it is well known that she loves Prim more than anything so as a revenge it makes a lot of sense to me. Can the winner volunteer to be tribute again?
