Rizzoli & Isles 1x02 ‘Boston Strangler Redux’

I enjoyed this episode much more than the pilot.

• I am really enjoying the Jane/Maura friendship.

• This episode also gave us more of Maura, she got a little more of the focus than in the pilot and scenes just about her without Jane, and even though she doesn’t get as much screen time as Jane she now feels more like a title character. I liked what we got of Maura and I was definitely getting a Temperance Brennan feel from her (though she seems to have a better understanding of emotions than Bones). I can’t help but think of crossover potential.

• Maura revealing that she was afraid of living people really endeared her to me. I really liked her scene with Frost and they could be an interesting couple.

• This episode took a look into the girls love lives and Jane had this line that had me scratching my head: “Any man I could love wouldn’t want me to do this job. And I love this job.” What does that even mean? Later she tells Maura that she dates two kinds “the kind that hates that I’m a cop and the kind that wants me to use the handcuffs.” My first reaction, to both lines, is - date different people. This isn’t difficult. The first line just really doesn’t make sense to me because why would she date men who hate her job long enough to fall in love with them? Once it became apparent that they hate her job then you’d think she’d dump them. It may be difficult but shouldn’t she be looking for someone who doesn’t mind her job since she apparently wants to date? I feel like she’s using these as excuses to keep a distance between her and getting close to a guy. This is fine as long as the show is saying that.

• I really liked the chemistry between Jane and new character Lt. Joey Grant. I could get behind them (though preferably when he is not her boss anymore). Donnie Walberg’s name isn’t on the cast list though so I don’t know how long he’ll be on the show. The fact that he’s her new boss would seem to indicate he’ll be around for the season and I hope so cause I like him and his interactions with Jane. I like how they’ve known each other all their lives and have this antagonistic relationship but one that is tempered by their history together and knowledge of each other.

• Also the fact that Joey totally likes her. It’s kind of embarrassing but I didn’t actually realise that the beat cop hanging around Jane this episode was her younger brother Frankie until that last scene at the station between them.

Persons Unknown 1x06 ‘The Truth’

• I totally ship Janet/Erica now. I was kind of shipping it by the end of the last episode with Erica telling Janet she’d always have her back (they bonded quick!) but from their very first scene in this episode I was all over them. I loved everything about it – their huge happy smiles when they saw each other at the beginning, the way that Janet didn’t flinch or look appalled or anything like when Erica stabs Blackham in the hand (in fact it looked like she smirked), how after he left they burst out laughing together, and then how they went right on chatting. I mean Erica already has a pet name for Janet – ‘bright eyes’ – aw. So for that first time I find myself actively shipping a pairing on this show. I didn’t think for a second that the show would actually go canon with it even though the way Erica looked at Janet definitely made me think she liked liked her. So when over the rest of the episode the show actually went text on the Erica/Janet, at least from Erica’s side, I was pretty surprised. The show brought it up in that first scene with Blackham when he calls Erica Janet’s girlfriend and then with Tom’s comments about them but then we actually got Erica telling Joe: “And stay away from Janet. (pause) Yeah. I got dibs.” I liked that when Erica did confront Janet the first time about Joe Janet was understandably sceptical but the exchange was pretty civil. Now that Joe is unmasked I really hope that the way it happened doesn’t cause Janet to mistrust or distance herself from Erica.

- On one hand, I ship them so for the show to go anywhere near canon with them makes me happy. Plus, unlike Tom, if the show actually did a Erica/Janet/Joe triangle I would be so happy. I mean a network show actually doing a female/female/male triangle with a guy and a girl competing for a girl is pretty big.

On the other hand though, I don’t actually trust TPTB not to mess up. Already there’s this implication of her being a crazy lesbian and the hint that the show could go in the direction of her being obsessed with Janet and willing to do anything to get her. I do not want Erica to turn out to be a crazy lesbian. Wow, would that piss me off. I actually have no problem with Erica poisoning Joe. Considering who she is (a convict, used to a hard life and having to fight, violent and willing to do what she has to to survive) and the situation (kidnapped and trapped in basically a ghost town in the middle of nowhere) and it makes complete sense that she would do this. Hell, I even support her doing it. The fact that one of the reasons she did it, perhaps even the main one, is because she wants Janet (“Here’s to us, Bright Eyes.”) is a little iffy for me but mainly because I don’t trust TPTB. I don’t need for the show to end with Janet and Erica a couple (I’m betting Janet/Joe will be doing that) but I do need their relationship to be more than Erica stalking Janet. I need Erica not to become a psycho obsessive lesbian stalker. I want what we got at the beginning of the episode, and at the end of the last episode – Janet and Erica bonded and friends – to continue. I would like for them to become even closer, for them to trust each other, and help each other and if the show wants to throw in some romance I’d be happy with that too. Also at this point we have Erica being very supportive and protective of Janet (“To protect you.”) which is great but I like equal relationships so I would really love to have Janet be just as protective of Erica.

• Stefano D’Angelo is very intriguing. He’s pretty hot, has nice accent, is well-outfitted, is clearly someone powerful (in some way) and undoubtedly rich and everything about the character hits my kinks. But I don’t know how much I trust him. I mean we didn’t know Tori well but in the four episodes she was hanging around she never once mentioned Stefano and never even implied that she was with someone let alone planning to get married. If the two of them were in love and planning to elope why did we never once hear his name or any implication that he existed? So it makes me distrustful. The power and connections that Stefano appears to have could prove to be very useful in finding the truth about what is happening, and Kat and Mark need the help, but I don’t completely buy yet that he is there to help. I guess we’ll see. I want to know who the hell is he that he has all these guys with guns protecting him. Is it business, mafia-type underground or royalty?

• I am still holding out hope that Tori is still alive. I know that we saw her body but considering the power behind this conspiracy I don’t think it’s out of the realm of reason that they faked her death for whatever reason. Maybe they have multiple towns around the world and she was dropped in a different one. I noticed when we saw her in the fountain that her nose was above the water. I guess I just think it would be a waste of character for her to have been killed off.

• I like that its violent newcomer Erica who figures out that they can just ask the cooks and get different food. You’d think after being stuck there for several weeks now someone else would have tried it. But how did no one smell the bacon being cooked? Bacon has a very powerful scent and it should have been everyone’s first thought when they walked in the door.

• I do not feel sorry for Blackham getting his hand stabbed because it really did seem like he was asking for it. I mean Morse went back into the kitchen to get his own plate of food like a normal person (and came out seconds later with his own food) whereas Blackham for some bizarre reason thought that it would be a good idea to try and take some food off Erica’s plate. Erica who had already beaten the crap out of him and proven she’s violent, and who warns him not to. So, what the hell? Idiot.

• How did Erica manage to poison Joe without anyone seeing? Not only the other abductees but also Tom?
