Revenge 1x07 Review

iariaFirst I have to get something out of the way, from TWoP:
The ladies of this show get a lot of attention for their outrageous soapy schemes, but Nolan is the quiet brains behind Emily's operation. She'd be nothing without him, and so would this show. here Uh, what? No. Just - no. Nolan is awesome and an excellent ally for Emily, very useful and loyal, if she'd let him. But Emily is the brains behind her operation. 'She'd be nothing without him' are you fucking kidding me?! They are her plans, her executions... until she came along he settled for hanging around annoying everyone. She is the mastermind! I knew this annoyed me but it wasn't until I wrote this out that I realise that it's actually leaving me pretty pissed. I love that this show gave us Emily - damaged, vengeance-obsessed, brilliant Emily - and the writer of this not only giving Nolan all the credit but characterizing her by using the the words "outrageous soapy schemes" makes me so angry. >:[
Okay. Moving on.

Wow this was an excellent episode.
With the appearance of the real Emily Thorne, who hopefully will be sticking around for awhile, this has made names a bit tricky. I’ve been call our main character ‘Emily’ because that’s how she thinks of herself and that’s what everyone else calls her. But it would be too weird to call the real Emily ‘Amanda’ and typing out ‘real Emily’ is too long. So from now until she leaves I’m going to use TWoP’s name for Emily - Emanda and Amily for real Emily.
• This episode has made me so much more interested in Amanda’s background and how exactly she became Emily Thorne.
• I am very intrigued by Warden Stiles and her role in Amanda’s life. It seemed suggested that she had been a mentor to Amanda. I mean she helped Amanda change her identity and her advice - "Never underestimate your enemy... and never let your guard down." – seems very specific to Amanda’s situation and very interesting advice for a warden to give a prisoner. Their relationship can’t just be down to Emanda donating a lot of money to the prison. What I want to know is does she know about Emily’s plans for revenge or was she just someone who was supportive of Amanda? Is Emanda any – closer/softer towards the Warden then she is with anyone else in her life?
• Then there is the Amily who voluntarily switched names, who (possibly) killed Frank for Amanda and was so very glad to see her. She tells Emanda “Don’t worry I took care of him” and the way she says it... as if Amanda is everything to her. It is very clear just from the minute they interacted that Amily cares for Emanda a lot. I want to know more so bad.
We only got that minute of actual interaction between the two but I already find myself shipping them. It’s just – they started off badly but clearly that changed significantly, and Amily hasn’t seen or heard from Emanda in years but when someone turns up asking questions she doesn’t even hesitate to kill him to protect Emanda. Dare I hope that there is some true feelings in their relationship?
I don’t have a very good read on Emanda’s reaction but Amily had to have gotten something back from Emanda that would cause her to retain such loyalty and continuing love. Emanda is pretty damn closed off but I’d love it if her relationship with Amily was real on some level and she does care back. I really hope that’s how it plays out. While I don’t see Emanda trusting Amily completely, I don’t think she’s capable at the moment, I can see her and Amily bonding in prison and pre-truth Amanda letting someone in even a little bit. A prison-situation bonds people, right? I guess I just want there to be some truth and caring in Emanda’s life/heart and Amily seems like the perfect person for that.
• We get confirmation with this episode that Daniel isn’t a target, which I’ve always thought, but then that makes him what? Ammunition against or punishment for his parents? Collateral damage? Why go for him?
• I love how excited Nolan was about his “first solo take down”. He goes from irritated with Emanda straight to gleeful.
• “You will and you’ll be prompt. I can be a very impatient person.” – Nolan. Wow! So he can be scary too. Cutthroat Nolan is kind of hot. I especially loved how he went from his usual casual self to aggressive and then ended with a big grin. I hope we get to see more of this side of him.
• I was spoiled for Nolan/Tyler but the way it played out was unexpected. I love the idea of Tyler and Nolan trying to play each other. So far it’s Nolan – 1 / Tyler – 0 (Nolan got good sex, accomplished what Emily wanted thus getting more respect from her and got a video to use for potential blackmail. It’s all win for him.)
- Mostly though I'm just really pleased that the show actually gave us a bisexual character! A male bisexual at that (well two, with Tyler, but I don't care about him). Also, I ship Emily/Nolan most of all the characters thus far, so I'm glad they went bi instead of gay.
• The Daniel/Victoria scene was really nice. He’s clearly her favourite but we get to see just how much he loves her too, despite his complaining about her. It was very sweet.
• Declan was annoying. What the hell was he thinking taking swipes at Emanda at dinner? So rude. I mean it was the freaking private anniversary dinner of his new girlfriend’s parents who already don’t like him. I’m also annoyed at him for thinking he knows anything about the Emily/Jack relationship and daring to scold Emanda about it. He knows his brother likes her and that she’s friendly with him, and possibly that she turned him down and while I can get behind his protectiveness Emanda isn't required to like Jack back and she has been very open about dating Daniel. Plus, seriously not the right time.
• Is Frank really dead then? It looks like it but that’s too bad if true. I was really interested in the possibility of Victoria/Frank and seeing where that went.
• Ashley teaming up with Tyler was unexpected. It would seem that she is far more ambitious then I thought. I wonder if she’s using her friendship with Emily as much as Emily does?
