Fringe Thoughts
Dec. 22nd, 2011 08:31 pmI’ve finally caught up on Fringe. So a couple thoughts:
• Nina, no! I have been so intrigued by the closer Nina/Olivia relationship and I loved the reveal that Nina basically adopted Olivia and Rachel (which is what I suspected). I love their closeness and it really seemed as if they mutually loved each other. Whatever the explanation is it will still be a betrayal of the trust Olivia has in Nina but I so hope it has something to do with protecting/helping Olivia. It undoubtedly has something to do with her status as a Cortexiphan kid. We haven’t actually seen amber!Olivia using or even having any of her Cortexiphan abilities which makes me wonder if Nina is suppressing them so that Olivia could have a ‘normal’ life (which is something she seems to want)? I could understand that. It’s still a betrayal but a softer one that is forgivable unlike say Nina continuing the Cortexiphan trials on Olivia.
• Peter seems to believe now that he is from another universe but I don’t know that I agree.
• Walter's reaction to Peter was so sad and I kept just wanting Olivia to give both of them hugs. But the moment that sticks out most was the scene in 4x06 where, after Peter's Faraday cage idea works, Walter states to himself "The cage was a good idea. He is very smart" and he sounds so proud. It was a lovely little moment.
• I’m mostly meh about Olivia/Lincoln but also a bit disgruntled. And not because of Olivia/Peter but because I’ve shipped (blue) Olivia/red Lincoln since last season and apparently not all Lincoln’s are made equally. The show was so close to giving me the crack pairing I never thought would happen and instead – doppelganger.
• I do actually like blue Lincoln but I feel like he’s been given too much screen-time. I want more Astrid instead. Or Nina. Or Broyles. We see so much of Lincoln in relation to them, because he is Olivia’s new partner/love interest, that it leaves me annoyed. I’ll be honest if it was red!Lincoln I’d love it because I love him but amber!Lincoln – not so much. Plus I really miss the Olivia/Peter partnership – we got it back in 4x06 which was wonderful. Also I feel like Lincoln’s greater screen-time is distracting from several relationships that I find much more important and interesting – mainly Olivia/Walter and Walter/Astrid. Also I was really hoping for some Olivia/Astrid friendship, which I felt was implied to exist in the amberverse, but that we haven’t really gotten. Sigh.
• I really missed the Red universe in the last three episodes of the year. I wish we got to see more of them. It’s especially disappointing considering that I thought/hoped this season would be all about the Olivias, and their universes, working together to save themselves. Hopefully next season we’ll see more of them - and not at the expense of our main universe but rather them together. The fact that they appear to have created the perfect shape-shifter spies does imply we will see them soon.
- One thing that stuck out about their absence was the fact that no one mentioned Walternate in relation to Peter. Peter has indicated that he was the Peter that Walter stole – which makes him Walternate’s son as well. I can understand why they’d keep him under wraps but I would have liked for someone to bring him or the other universe up.
