True Blood 1x01 Review

So honestly I was not expecting to like this show. It’s why I haven’t even bothered to try it up until now despite the vampires (I do love vampires). The fact that there is a lot about this I liked came as a big surprise to me.
• For some reason I had this idea that Sookie was a weak character, someone who always needed protecting and was innocent and helpless and just a character I wouldn’t like. Maybe it’s that I’ve come across hatred for Sookie and people talking about how much worse she is in the show than in the books. Honestly I should know better at this point than to listen to that. So I have to say I was pretty delighted with Sookie. In fact I love Sookie. I’m just finding her so awesome and... adorable. And she kicks ass!
I love everything about her so far. I love how moral she is – that she’s got this wonderful set of moral guidelines that she lives by and doesn’t fail to live up to. I love that she calls her brother out for what he is (not a stand-up guy) but loves him as he is. I love that she has this gift, that can be so horrible but she lives with it the best she can. I love that she’s proud, and hardworking, and a lady (except when she’s not). I love that she doesn’t care what others think. I love that she stands up for herself. I loved the – kookiness of her that had her being appalled that someone can make a thousand dollars a night to be with a vamp rather than women being paid to be with a vamp. That amused me. And I love her especially for these two reasons:
“Do you want me to kick his ass?” – Jason
“I already took care of that thank you.” – Sookie
She totally won me over when she ‘beat up’ the Rattray’s, saving Bill’s life, and then maintained her calm, and pose, and humour during the scene that followed. Her confidant swagger back to the bar was wonderful. I loved that whole section.
"Shut up, the both of you! And stop bossing me around! I am a grown woman, and I am the one who decides what I do, not one of you." – Sookie. Yay.
• Oh, also, I was under the impression that Sookie could just hear what people were thinking and then we got her throwing the chain at Mack’s throat and it moving on its own to coil around his neck like a snake, squeezing the life out of him. Cool. So this means she’s – telekinetic? Or is it something different? What else can she do?
• I love the Sookie/Tara friendship. I’m really interested in how it even came about because they are just so different and yet clearly like and adore each other. Of course they’ve been friends since they were in kindergarten so who they are now wasn’t who they were when they became friends but they’ve stayed best friends for years. I want to know more. I just really loved them. I loved how after Sookie’s freak-out at Tara and Sam, Tara wasn’t angry with Sookie (for reading her mind yet again) but instead was worried about her.
• Tara noticing how Sookie and Jason, her longstanding crush, have the same eyes, “such sweet eyes” made me go hmmm and I can definitely see myself shipping these two.
• Also – I just have to say that Tara is really very pretty.
• I was surprised that I liked Bill as much as I did. I don’t know – I really wasn’t expecting to like him at all. But he came off mysterious and other, and... I like him. I’m intrigued. Even more importantly I really liked the Sookie/Bill interactions and since they’re the main pairing this really is a good thing. If things continue as they began between these two I guess it won’t be such a hardship watching their relationship.
• So the vampires presence quieting the ever-present voices, stopping them entirely even, well, there has never been a better reason to date a vampire now has there? It’s not just the allure of the vampire – there is an actual, understandable reason for her to want to date vampires. I like that.
• I was not expecting the soft core porn interludes. ... I’m hoping there aren’t a lot of them.
• Are we supposed to think that the dog was Sam (since Sam is a werewolf I know)? Cause I kind of got that feeling and yet... it’s a dog. For the werewolves to look like dogs would actually be excellent camouflage but just seems so silly. Perhaps werewolves have a bond with dogs and Sam sent it to check on Sookie? Or perhaps I’m just reading way too much into it.
• I like Sam and I can’t wait to the whole werewolf thing comes into play (he loves how she smells!) but I’m not actually shipping Sam/Sookie. I wonder how often she’s had moments like that one in his office? Yeah, it’s an intrusion, an invasion of privacy for Sam, but in a way it’s the exact same thing for Sookie. I don’t imagine this was the first time this happened. Earlier in the episode Sam subtly comes onto Sookie and she stares at him in innocent incomprehension but now, now I’m not so certain of that, and I’m thinking that Sookie’s probably gotten to be a pretty good actor.
• I watched a short scene some time ago with Lafayette that really hit my embarrassment squick and I couldn’t finish it but actually watching the show I’m loving him. His relationship with Tara is excellent (I loved his comment about her never being allowed to work in any job that requires her to interact with people) as are his relationships with the waitresses at Merlotte’s. I want to see more of his relationship with Sookie in particular.
• I loved the image of that delicate silver chain holding Bill down, and then later Sookie wrapping it around her neck like a scarf. The visual of her removing it from his skin, leaving behind burned flesh and even taking some of it with the necklace, was really well done if a bit gross.
