Knight of the Demon Queen

I liked it more than I was expecting.

+ My issue with this series is that it’s just so unrelentingly depressing. I know others find The 100 like that but I never have because there is joy and happiness and the characters do have ‘wins’ occasionally and take happiness where they can. With this book (and the last I think) there’s so little to lighten it up. Not much at all. There is one book to the series which I have, so I will finish it. If it were an ongoing series I’d drop it.

+ I really liked John’s trip into the tech world. It was neat to see a world so very different with the ever blazing ads and the chemical rain soaked city and abundant drugs, though of course depressing in its own ways as everything in this series is.

+ I liked Morkeleb’s return.

+ I liked the sequence where Jenny turns back into a dragon and then her kids track her down.

+ I am very interested in what’s up with Corvin. I’m guessing he’s going to be the key to defeating the demons.

+ I found myself wondering if TechWorld was actually the past or future of John/Jenny’s world at one point. I’d like to learn more about these other worlds and ‘Hells’. I’m curious if the ‘hells’ are simply worlds that have been completely taken over and destroyed by demons, like a spreading plague?

+ I liked John and Clea saving Corvin scene and how that played out.

+ That little moment of potential between John and Clea was weird. I didn’t see it coming and even what we got – a kiss and some wistfulness in a small paragraph – was so little I wonder why it was even added?

Dragonstar

I liked it. It was a much more hopeful throughout with an actually optimistic end, so yay.

+ I loved the implication that John and Jenny would travel with Morkeleb through other Worlds and Hells to help him search out the missing Dragonshadows, and honestly I would actually read that book, something I would never have thought when I half-reluctantly started this book.

+ I can’t believe that I didn’t realise that Corvin was a dragon in the last book. All that gold! Duh. He played less of a role than I was expecting but I did like that he was the one to save John from burning at the stake.

+ I loved John’s solution for how to deal with the demons. I like that his journey to the tech world ended up being so important, not just for Corvin and the sword but also for the ether crystal knowledge. The Henge being re-powered by ether-crystals (filled with the help of all the dragons Jenny saved) and then the inside filled with the Shining Things was a very triumphant end.

+ I even liked that Aohila got her happy ending. I liked the reveal at the end that Aohila was the secret architect of a lot of what happened because there had been a lot of little things that felt too easy or convenient. It makes sense to me why she’d do everything she did.

+ I liked the Dragonstar explanation for why the demons had suddenly become strong and prominent again.

+ The ‘Shining Things’ were angels, yes? They were neat.

+ I actually wish that Amayon's death and Jenny's reaction to it had been drawn out a little more.

+ Jenny getting her magic back was nice but even more so because she reached a stage of peace with her power and no longer felt the need to make her life be all about getting more.

+ I like that the Jenny/Morkeleb friendship remained important.

Overall, I liked how everything came together. I just wish I’d enjoyed the middle two books of the series more.
