Ghost Stories

Great little horror movie. I feel like it's a movie that would reward a second watch.

+ I loved Alex Lawther as Simon. He was amazing and gave my favourite performance. I loved how creepy his entire section of the story was and that it started off creepy even before he told his story. The part with his parents and then the knocking on the door weren't doing anything new but it did it well.

+ My favourite moment in the entire movie was Simon's reaction to the goat creature: "fuck that!" and immediately running away. It was hilarious, a much needed break in the tension of that scene, and also so relatable and exactly the type of reaction you'd think more people would have in these types of movies.

+ The first and second supernatural cases were excellent, super tense and I like that they relied on that over gore, but I found the third one not as interesting or scary. My only real dislike in those scenes was how in each flashback there is one moment where we see something scary outside the characters POV. It actually took me out of the moment a little.

+ I liked the end reveal that Goodman actually suffered from locked-in syndrome and everything was taking place in his head. It worked, especially with how the things he experienced were inspired by what was happening around his body. I loved that. It all came together really well.

Rampage

This was basically a dumb B-movie with a huge budget and several actors I like. On that level it was enjoyable enough but I wish it had been more fun.

+ Loved George and his relationship with Davis. They were the best part. George's sense of humour was great and I loved their bickering and obvious love for each other. The end with the playing dead was great. I wish we'd seen the moment where Davis and George met during the flashback because it would have given that extra little emotional punch to their relationship.

+ The Rock continues to be very charming and enjoyable to watch.

+ Kate had a couple of nice little moments - thinking of the medic helicopter, breaking the door, sneaking a vial of cure. I liked that she saw her chance to take down Claire and jumped at it, and then throughout the entire adventure was an equal to Davis. She pulled her own weight.

+ Davis and Kate were fine but there was something missing to make them really interesting as a pair so I liked that they didn't get together,

+ I didn't find the movie funny. There were a couple amusing moments, like Davis's first attempt to fly the helicopter, but most of the jokes failed for me.

+ I liked Claire as a villain and how ruthless she was. She came off as capable which makes her not taking off like her brother once the mutated animals actually reached the building and choosing to continue to try and take the helicopter (especially since the pilot was dead) feel off. She was smarter than that. Eh, but then she did put the homing beacon on top of her own building and didn't immediately evacuate so eh.

+ I hated how Claire died. A lot. Kate putting the cure into her handbag and then them 'feeding' her to George was terrible. Up until that point George hadn't eaten anyone so why the hell would they assume he'd eat Claire? Going by his behaviour up until that point he should have thrown her off the building along with the cure. The cure is in Claire's handbag and she could have easily dropped it which would have led to failure. On top of that I needed a lot more build-up of Kate's animosity towards Claire and Davis's dislike of other people to buy them so cavalierly feeding a person to a giant ape. Also, that can't be good for George's digestion so you'd think Davis would be worried about that.

+ Russell sending Brett out to die bothered me less because shadowy government agent but I still wasn't a fan. I did like him saving the pet rat.

+ Actually death as a whole was treated really casually in a way I was not a fan of.

+ Davis being involved in the fight with the giant monsters was ridiculous. He should have died or been hurt into immovability so many times. That said, B-movie and action-movie logic, so fine. I did like the ways he fought - turning the crocodile and wolf against each other, the grenades, the (conveniently) downed military helicopter.
