Happy Death Day

It was fine.

+ I really liked the conceit behind the movie and I thought it was utilized well. I liked that with each reset the damage Tree incurred gradually began affecting her health. I liked the change in Tree over the iterations.

+ I liked Tree. She started off as a dick and I enjoyed how she dealt with what was happening to her and where she ended up.

+ I was neutral mostly on the romance. I think it got off on the wrong foot with me when Carter confirmed he didn't have sex with black-out drunk Tree and she gets this amazed smile and there's this implication like he's this amazingly great guy because of that, when in fact, he was literally doing the bare minimum of being a decent human being. Get better standards in men, Tree! That said I liked him fine.

+ Lori as the killer was fine, the cupcake was excellent and I liked Tree's incredulousness that all this was over a guy. Buttt... in one of those days Lori killed Gregory by stabbing him in the back, which makes no sense to me. There is no hint anywhere that Lori has any anger directed at Gregory. It's all jealousy aimed at Tree for getting in the way. So her casually killing him like that... nah. It would have worked so much better if she'd hit him over the head of otherwise taken him down in an obviously non-fatal way and it could have acted as another clue to the killer's real identity.

It (Chapter One)

I liked it.

+ I loved Bev. I loved her bravery - in taking the cliff jump, in going to help Mike immediately, in landing the first blow on Pennywise, in literally being fearless enough when faced with Pennywise that he can't kill her. I like that she got the final blow. I like her strength in dealing with all the little horrible bits of her everyday life (her dad, the bullying) and how she was still a kind person despite it.

+ Ben was adorable. I loved his sweetness. I loved that he managed to escape Henry and his gang by himself in a very ballsy way. He was great.

+ I wish Mike had either been integrated into the Losers earlier or that the full group had been given a couple more bonding scenes after he joined. We didn't get enough of his friendship with the others.

+ Bill's grief over Georgie was really well done.

+ I loved the Losers's rescue of Mike from Henry and his gang. It was a very triumphant moment.

+ I liked Ritchie's moment during the final confrontation where he seems like he might leave but instead tells off Pennywise.

+ The movie had nicely creepy atmosphere. I liked how the adults ignored everything that was wrong so hard they didn't even notice things that should have been obvious like a blood covered bathroom, or walking through a flooded basement. One of the creepiest moments was the couple driving past Ben being beat up and completely ignoring it.

+ I liked Pennywise but there were too many jump scares and sudden fast movements. I think the movie would have been scarier if it had been a little more subtle and used both those tactics a lot less.

+ There was a 30 second deleted scene outside the Neibolt house with Mike comforting Stan and Ben comforting Beverly that I loved. It was so short but was a great subtle character and relationship building moment and I have no idea why it was deleted.
