Overall it was a good shark movie.
+ I liked the whole basis for the movie – that there was an unknown deeper layer of the Mariana Trench where the megalodon exists with giant squid. ... okay! I will buy it.
+ I liked Meiying a lot. She was adorable. I liked Suyin.
+ I think I would have liked the movie more if it had been a bit more of an ensemble instead of Statham’s Jonas being the lead who gets to be the awesomest at everything. That said I did love the part where he jumped in to save Suyin when she was in the shark cage and the others were all impressed.
+ Morris’s “Tag it? Don’t any of you watch Shark Week” amused me a lot.
+ Saddest part was the poor baby whale banging into the habitat, clearly asking for help, before being viciously eaten by Megalodon. Humans are one thing, fine. But not the whales! There was too much whale death.
+ I did like the megalodon taking out the shark hunting boats – that was A+ targeting.
+ It annoyed me that The Wall died considering his friend sacrificed himself in part to save him.
+ Lori being Jonas’s ex-wife felt somewhat random considering nothing in their interactions really felt like it? She could have easily been his sister or best friend. But at the same time that kind of makes me love it more? It’s such a non-issue and there is no romantic tension between them, it’s just this random fact that gives them a connection which is something that almost never happens. So I like it. Their first scene when he rescues her was a really nice moment.
