His Dark Materials 1x02 - 1x04 Thoughts

iariaI thought the first episode was fine but wasn't invested at all so after over a month of not watching the show I found myself very meh about continuing. I decided to give it one more episode before deleting all the episodes – and I really enjoyed it.
1x02 'The Idea of North'
+ Mrs. Coulter is absolutely fascinating and I love her. Ruth Wilson is amazing. Her and Lyra’s interactions were so interesting. The scene where Marisa spills the truth about Asriel was amazing. Knowing who she is to Lyra makes everything even better. She clearly loves Lyra so much but also has no idea how to deal with that, and is a terrible person and is terrible as a parents and yet she wants so badly to have Lyra. It's messed up and I love it.
+ Meanwhile the relationship between Marisa and her daemon is very uncomfortable feeling! Her actually hitting her golden monkey – wow.
+ I loved the scene where the golden monkey reaches out to pet Pan - everyone's reactions in that scene was A+. I ended up feeling really sorry for the golden monkey.
1x03 'The Spies'
+ "Make your mind go blank again. You should be good at that." – Pan. Ha.
+ The golden monkey is so expressive and I just feel so bad for it! Him touching at the dust left from Benjamin’s daemon’s death was a tiny but great little moment. I honestly love him and just want Marisa to stop being so self-hating and give him a hug. :(
+ Mrs. Coulter continues to be super riveting to watch – I loved her scene with the Master and her feral (monkey-like) attack on Sebastian.
+ I like Farder Coram and Ma Costa and their interactions with Lyra were both lovely. I liked Ma Costa as Lyra's nurse and her telling Lyra the truth.
+ Lord Boreal and his relationship with Mrs Coulter is interesting.
+ I noticed it in the very first episode and after two more it hasn't gotten significantly better -- I think the producers dropped the ball on the daemon world-building. The lack of obvious daemons all over the place itself feels wrong, and there had to have been some way to work around a budget to make it obvious that everyone has one, but on a bigger note I think they missed hitting making the world feel like everyone has a daemon. Daemons always having been a part of this world should change so many aspects of how it works and I didn't get that feel at all.
1x04 'Armour'
+ Hester is great and I loved all her long-suffering reactions to Lee's nonsense. The eyeroll at the stealing amused me.
+ Lyra was super great. This was my favourite episode for her. "What did I tell you about how I play cards?" – Lyra, HA! I loved her tricking Lee (and stealing his bacon). I loved her smugly bringing her 'finds' to Lord Fa and her unrepentant disobedience and insolence. I liked her asking Dr. Lanselius 'what question she should be asking him'.
+ I liked Lyra's decision to start trusting people, and her reasoning made sense, but at the same time it felt like it came out of nowhere and didn't have enough buildup.
+ Iorek looked pretty good.
+ Farder’s reaction to learning from Kaisa that Serafina would support him was so great. He was also great when he told Lyra about his past, and him tearing up over the loss of his son. :( I also loved him telling Lee that he was just follow Lyra’s lead. Just overall I love Farder.
+ Lord Faa’s exasperation with Lyra’s everything was great.
+ The Golden Monkey and Marisa continue to give me all the sad feelings – when he reached up for her hand and she slapped it away, and when she shut down his concern on the airship. I know that they're going to have a bad end and at this point I just want someone to give the Golden Monkey some affection before that point. Fingers crossed for Stelmaria stepping up.
+ I love how the scene between Marisa and the Cardinal played out. She is so great. The way she started seeming weak and penitent and then so quickly and effortlessly pulled the rug out from under then and was absolutely the one in control by the end. I loved her sitting down and then patting the seat beside her.
