His Dark Materials 1x05 and 1x06 Thoughts

+ I loved Lord Faa pointing out that when Lyra wants something she calls him 'Lord Faa' but otherwise calls him 'John Faa' and her cheeky "No Lord Faa" and both their amusement over it. Very cute moment.
+ I liked Lyra's ease with Iorek and loved her stating that some part of her was "definitely bear". I also liked Lee comforting Lyra after her return to the camp.
+ Lyra finding Billy was a great scene and I really liked her during it. Pan's fear was really well done. But while Billy's fate was sad and I felt for Ma Costa it didn't hit me emotionally like I was expecting. There was something missing about the reveal. I wish Billy had talked to Lyra, perhaps muttering feverishly 'where's ratter?' Everyone noticing Ratter was missing so quickly made me go, eh but why? The lead up to Lyra finding him was very atmospheric and creepy but having actual villagers there avoiding the hut and/or warning Lyra away might have worked better. The Gyptians reaction also felt more like finding a lost dying child vs reacting to something utterly horrifying and unnatural. I think the lack of daemons in the show really negatively impacted this moment too.
1x06 'The Daemon-Cages'
+ Mrs. Coulter, and her interactions with Lyra, continue to be one of my favourite parts. I love how feral/orangutan-like Mrs. Coulter is (crouched on the desk!) and how similar she and Lyra keep being shown to be. I really loved their enraged screaming at each other from either side of the door.
+ I loved Serafina swooping in to kill the tartars.
+ The mention of Lee loving Lyra felt a little too fast for me. He clearly really cares for her and they've done a good job building that up but this felt a little too soon.
+ "And they want you on their team?!" / "Shut up, Hester." LOL.
+ The look of Bolvangar was great.
+ So John Faa was Billy's dad, right? Because I keep thinking so and then they don't show any confirmation (he wasn't with the family when Billy died) but then how he interacts with Ma Costa says yes he was. I really liked the little moment between the two of them in the forest and I'm going to take them holding hands as them finding their way back to each other after tragedy.
+ I've noticed this before but why do they never show Lyra (and most other people but especially Lyra) holding and touching their daemons? It was especially noticeable in these last two episodes. Lyra and Pan almost got separated! You would think their very first desire after being freed would be to hold each other but they not only didn't run to each other they basically ignored one another. Nor was Lyra holding him while sitting on the bed afterwards. It felt so wrong! And it bothers me so much. Also in the previous episode she didn't reach out for Pan after realising what happened to Billy nor did they cuddle for comfort when Billy was taken away. It's... weird. It makes their relationship feel shallower and less essential than it should, and honestly really undermines the whole human/daemon bond.
