iaria1x07 'The Fight to the Death'
+ I loved Asriel. His reaction to seeing Lyra there, his fear and panic, and then that chilling calm, the relief, when he saw Roger standing there. Yikes. I loved the way he said "I did not send for you" while holding her face.
+ Lyra and Roger were very sweet. I loved their hug of comfort outside Asriel's lab.
+ Not sure about the armoured bears taking off their armour. Didn't Lee say that the armour was essentially like daemons for armoured bears? When Iorek lost his it made him (even more) despondent and lost. So that confused me.
1x08 'Betrayal'
Really great episode.
+ I'm a little sad we didn't get to see more of Lord Asriel because, as with Mrs. Coulter, he is so magnetic and engaging to watch. Also as with her, he is a terrible person and I enjoy him so much. The way he threw Roger in that cage and then tried to justify himself as he was moving to murder him was so horrible. And he's such a fanatic that he can't even see it.
Earlier Lyra tells him "She didn't want to damage me. Happy to damage others." to which he responds "Is that a fact" and that's basically him Lyra is describing too. That's both her parents. But at the same time a part of me wonders - is it? Because what if Roger hadn't come with her? Would Asriel have gone through with it still? I'm not sold he wouldn't have.
+ The Asriel/Lyra scenes were great.
+ "Your choice in women is almost as bad as your choice in bears." Heh. I loved how they laughed together, that she made him genuinely laugh for a second, and then of course he immediately runs away because he can't feel things, that would interfere with his mission, and then he has to put distance between them.
+ Poor Roger. It was so sad and didn't become less so knowing what was going to happen.
+ I really loved all the Roger/Lyra scenes. These two episodes really sold their deep love for each other. This really got to me - "I'm here because of you and you're here because of me. Because we changed each other's lives. I like the fact that you changed my life." and it's clear that it's not something Lyra's going to get over soon.
+ I found it interesting the way he said "your mother stopped them?", the expression on his face, his surprise over it. I'm a little sad that Lyra missed the Marisa/Asriel talk because I'm curious if it would have changed her view on her mother at all.
+ I loved the Asriel/Marisa scene. I loved the kiss, and him asking her to go with him, and his telling her to never deny her own ambitions, and that she doesn't even try and pretend she wants to stop him.
+ I was so happy to see the Golden Monkey and Stelmaria cuddle up together. Yes! He finally go some affection and kindness. And there was so much longing and affection in that little moment between them.
+ There were a couple really great shots I loved - the bridge was beautiful, the scene of Marisa and Asriel backlit by it was so lovely, and I loved that shot of Mrs. Coulter from the back with the Magisterium soldiers on either side.
+ Marisa letting Thorold go free because Asriel's never treated any of them well was an interesting little character moment.
+ Obviously Marisa didn't really want to stop Asriel and that's the only explanation for why she set her troops to fight the armoured bears instead of sending the blimps straight to the mountain top. I really want to know how the hell the bears managed to make one of the blimps crash in ball of flames though.
