Isle of Dogs Thoughts
Mar. 4th, 2020 10:58 pmI liked it.
+ It had some really nice humour at points.
+ I loved the interactions between the main dog pack.
+ I liked the slow bond that built between Atari and Chief.
+ The biggest issue by far was that none of the main four dogs were female for no reason that I could see. It’s the sort of thing that always bothers me though. Also that Nutmeg was somehow still pretty and well-groomed with no explanation.
+ The movie didn’t really need any of the romance. Spots/Peppermint, fine for the puppies, but Atari/Tracey and Chief/Nutmeg really weren’t needed.
+ I was disappointed that towards the end the four other dogs of the main pack lost a lot of prominence in the story and kind of disappeared as characters.
+ In fact on the whole the end was different than I was expecting and felt a little rushed.
+ When Spots was dropped on the island I was waiting for the cage to buzz open remotely and found myself increasingly D: as it wasn’t. When it was revealed the bones weren’t Spots I was all yay! Except then I kept thinking about it and even if Spots didn’t die like that the poor dog Sport did and by the dogs words he was a really good dog. And how many others died like that? So still sad.
+ The idea of the language barrier was interesting but would have worked much better if we’d understood the humans but when dogs heard them we got Peanut’s parent mumbling (or Japanese super rushed/mumbled into ineligibility) instead.
+ I liked Tracey but there really was no reason for her to be a white exchange student.
