Look Alive Twenty-Five by Janet Evanovich
Mar. 9th, 2020 05:31 pmIt was okay.
I think if it was book five I would have enjoyed it more. But as I’ve known for like the last eight books their stalled nature has been making me increasingly meh.
+ In this book Stephanie fumbling through working at the deli made sense because it really isn’t something she knows, but I was disappointed that she didn’t have a more significant role in solving the mystery (though I liked her picking out the warehouse) and I didn’t like how everyone else had more to do with collecting her skips than she did. That makes me sigh a lot. It really emphasised how much Stephanie hasn’t grown into her role as a bounty hunter and how much that annoys me.
+ I liked Ranger expressing faith in her abilities and telling her ‘she would do the capture her own way’.
+ The triangle continues to be in a weird static place. Stephanie stating that she didn’t choose Morelli because she didn’t like his job, family or friends, and because she’s commitment-adverse and then followed up by stating she didn’t pick Ranger because he didn’t want to get married made me go hmmm. That’s a pretty telling statement. Though presumably the commitment-adverseness would also apply to Ranger too?
We got a slight sign that maybe Ranger is moving into wanting more – the maybe wistfulness – which makes me wonder if she’d change her opinion if he did? While Stephanie and Morelli are currently 'on' in their relationship there was a lot of Stephanie/Ranger too.
I do enjoy the weird truce Ranger and Morelli have worked out over Stephanie and would honestly like to see a lot more of that. Like take a break from the usual routine and have the three of them off in some other location, maybe having to survive together, and forced to work as a team. That would make excited to read a book again. It’ll never happen but I wish Janet would commit to Stephanie and her two boyfriends.
+ Honestly I feel like Janet is getting bored with these books too and that’s why she keeps adding her characters from her fun new series in. I found Wulf vastly less annoying than Diesel but he still had no reason to be in this book.
+ I really wish she’d mix things up because it’s so stale at this point and I really don’t know that I even want to keep reading. I don’t dislike the books but I’m just so unenthused about them.
