Grey's Anatomy 16x18 - 16x20 Thoughts
Apr. 4th, 2020 08:36 pm16x18 ‘Give A Little Bit’
+ This episode had a lot of little moments I liked:
- The Jo/Meredith phone call was all I wanted! If we can’t get anything big (whyyy?) then at least give us these little moments. I liked that Jo called her Mere, and Jo’s realisation that she doesn’t want to be Karev anymore and Mere going with it, and then Mere tough loving her out of bed and back to work.
- I liked that Richard/Jackson scene and that after going through many people Jackson found the perfect person to take.
- I continue to like Helm’s hero-worshiping of Meredith. I also liked her being honest with Schmidt about his relationship
- I liked the Meredith/DeLuca stairwell scene a lot.
- I liked the Meredith/Cormac scene at the end.
+ So far I don't mind how they're approaching the DeLuca bipolar storyline. It's not that he's becoming a bad doctor, in fact he's not usually obviously wrong in what he thinks but rather wrong entirely in how he approaches it. Running out into the blizzard to get the organ was the right thing to do, doing it without gloves was insane. He's rash and loud and lashes out and it affects how people view him and his opinions and I don't think they're necessarily wrong about that.
+ "I knew you were dirty I didn’t know you were that dirty." Boo to that. Or rather, I really wanted a follow-up scene between them at the end of the episode (or the next which also didn't happen.) Judgmental isn't out of character but I wanted a moment of self-reflection from Meredith too. She breaks rules all the time for the greater good, Tom did it to help people. She takes advantage of that 'dirty choice' at the end to institute free surgery days every month without even consulting him! I really felt for him in that moment - Grey getting the adulation and respect, and him left to either figure out how to pay for it (with his dirty choice) or be even more hated by reversing it. Having a moment between them where they actually talk about it really felt missing.
+ "I love you so I want to make this easy for you." I really do like Koracick and this scene was one of the reasons why. He's often an asshole - and sleeping with an engaged woman is not that different from a married one! - but at his inner core he is a good person. I want him to stop being on the outside, there but not accepted, with no friends but the woman he's in love with who is marrying a different man. Let him and Meredith be friends because I think they would actually work really well together, but if not give him someone else. Amelia (and Linc), or Jo, or anyone.
16x19 'Love of My Life'
+ Weirdly, Teddy’s back-story this episode has made me like her more? You'd think her having a background of cheating would just make me dislike her more, instead I really felt for her. I thought the whole story was really well done. The reveal that Allison died in 9-11 and Teddy meeting Owen afterwards "saved her from a grief so huge she would have let it kill her" kind of recontextualizes their relationship for me. I really liked the final Claire/Teddy scene and how it played out with Teddy reassuring Claire that Allison did love her too and them making peace. I loved how they tied it into Teddy's current storyline triangle with Owen and Koracick. Honestly I really loved this part of the episode.
+ The Maggie/Teddy hug was weird, as was how happy they were to see each other. Since when are they friends?! I guess being surrounded by strangers makes even a person you're not close to but know well someone you're happy to see.
+ I couldn't watch Richard's breakdown on stage. That was horrifying. Poor Richard.
+ I was surprised that Meredith wasn't at the conference for the Hayes backstory if nothing else. Her being in the scene when he went off on the representative instead of Teddy would have made more sense to me considering where they're probably going with them. I did like Maggie giving Richard her apologies for not being able to make it, thus making it clear she was planning to be there for him.
16x20 'Sing It Again'
+ I loved the Meredith/Richard scene. Her talking him down was great. "Richard, I can fix you. ... I want them to grow up and know who you are. ...I need you. I’m not ready to let you go yet." I loved the gut punch of him calling her Ellis.
+ Okay, if Catherine can't be on Richard's case as his wife than why the hell is Maggie on it? She should have been working a different case while worrying, or trying to help diagnose and being allowed because everyone is compromised.
+ I felt so bad for Koracick. I'm glad he got to save Guthrie though I feel like it's going to make him more sure he could have saved David if he's been there. I liked his scenes with Teddy and her being there for him but it just made me once again wish he had more friends in the cast. I liked Amelia's part in the story - let them be friends again!
+ I liked the Mere/DeLuca scene.
+ Owen terrifying Linc about parenthood and then casually whistling as he completes the surgery made me laugh.
+ Jo telling Schmitt that he won’t be the one to figure out what's wrong with Richard makes me think he will be. I liked her toughness with him at work and then her little speech to him at the end. I think she's going to be really good for him.
