Sherlock 2x01 Thoughts

Wow, I loved it!
Things I Liked
• I ship Sherlock/Irene so much. I loved this version of them. I’ve always liked them but they were amazing in this episode. I was fascinated by their relationship. Sherlock’s reaction when he found her Christmas gift and when he thought she was dead – it affected him so much. He mourned her. He forgave her lie about her death easily. He showed off to impress her. He almost kissed her. He was visually hurt when she dismissed him on the plane (“Mr. Holmes I think we need to talk. ... Not you junior, you’re done now.”), and seemingly when he closed his eyes after she pointedly told ‘Mycroft’ “I think he just likes to cause trouble. Now that’s my kind of man.” Then there was the way he said “the woman” at the end, the grin on his face and the caress in his voice.
Did they fall in love? Maybe, maybe not. I don’t think that really matters because it doesn’t really change the fact of how much they mean to each other.
• I love Irene. That’s all.
• I loved the Irene/John scene at the factory. I loved it all and this most of all:
“I’m not actually gay.” – John
“Well, I am. Look at us both.” – Irene
... *hands* I love that. ♥
• I loved everything with Mrs. Hudson. The absolute best thing was her grabbing the phone and hiding it in her shirt after being taken hostage by gun-toting men. Awesome! I love that Sherlock knew – “in the safest place I know” and the hug made me go aww. All the Mrs. Hudson/Sherlock stuff was great. I loved how very angry he got when she was taken hostage and him being comforting. Also his shocked and disapproving “Mycroft!” when Mycroft told her to shut up.
• Sherlock/Mycroft at the morgue.
• Irene making her text alert noise her moan and Sherlock never bothering to change it.
• Irene and Sherlock’s phone password game after she turns to him for ‘help’.
• “I always hear punch me in the face when you’re speaking but it’s usually subtext.” – John. LOL.
• I really wasn’t sure about Irene being a dominatrix but that ended up working for me.
• “Somebody loves you. Why if I had to punch that face I’d avoid your nose and teeth too.” – Irene.
• I love that Irene was working with Moriarty. I’m choosing to believe it was ‘with’ and not her being a pawn otherwise I’d like it a lot less. I think of it as them using each other for mutually beneficial reasons. She had information she didn’t know how to use and he gave her advice but it was her, or their, scheme not his.
- I ship the idea of Irene/Sherlock/Moriarty like crazy. I think it could be a fascinating threesome.
• Mycroft/John scene about Irene and Sherlock at the end.
• I liked what we saw of Kate and Kate/Irene. Kate definitely seems like Irene’s version of John and I really hope that when we see Irene again Kate’s with her.
• Drugged Sherlock.
• The scene by the river – Lestrade calling the other DCI to explain about Sherlock, Sherlock forcing John to go alone with a laptop, Sherlock apparently talking to John and making decisions when John isn’t even there and John’s threat about the mute button.
Things I Didn’t Like
• I had a problem with Sherlock not being able to tell anything about Irene because she was naked. The fact that she chose to meet him naked should already tell him a lot. It’s especially bothersome considering that the show has him specifically comparing what he could tell about a clothed Watson and what he couldn’t tell about Irene and yet not everything Sherlock sees about John is in his clothes. So why isn’t Sherlock taking information in about Irene’s choice of lipstick or earrings, etc?
• I didn’t like Irene begging Sherlock at the end. I think it would have fit better and been much stronger for her to ask “Are you expecting me to beg” and after he says yes for her to simply stare at him silently (and them to exchange stares before he leaves).
• My biggest issue was definitely the ending. Mycroft tells John – “Only Sherlock Holmes would be able to fool me.” – and I knew exactly what was going to happen after he said that. I’m torn about how I feel about it. On the balance I think I could have done without how it played out. I think it would have been more interesting if it had gone one of these ways:
- Cut out Sherlock’s flashback entirely and leave it open as to Irene’s fate. Is she dead or not? Did Sherlock save her or does he know that she’s safe by some other means?
- Cut out Sherlock’s flashback. Sherlock has put the phone away when – moan – and when he pulls out the phone it reads “I’m dead again. Have dinner with me next time I come back?” Or something. Sherlock smiles as a) outside Kate, Irene’s blonde assistant, walks away and/or b) Irene walking down the street in some big city puts her phone away with a smile.
- The flashback is not Sherlock’s. We see either Irene saving herself or (my choice) that it was all a set up by Irene to fake her own death.
- Or if the rescue is a must it would have made a big difference even if they’d just shown Irene fighting back. So she realises it’s him and smiles, then when he turns on one of the terrorists she takes out the one with the gun who was beside her.
• I did like that the flashback ends on Irene’s smile. That smile didn’t seem like relief at being saved but rather victory or vindication that Sherlock does care for her. Sherlock won their game when he figured out her phone password but in a way Irene won as well when Sherlock saved her and thus got him to confirm that he did care about her.
