The obvious choices are Tess Harding (Roswell), Bela Talbot (Supernatural) and Amber Volakis (House) but they’re always first choices in these questions so trying something different:
Carolyn Fry (Pitch Black) – The movie, unexpectedly, ended up being just as much about her and her journey as it was about Riddick. So her dying while saving him at the end was a bitter pill to swallow. Instead she should have saved Riddick and escaped the planet.
Evred Montei-Vayir /Inda Algara-Vayir (Inda series) – I shipped these two so much and for a little while I thought they might actually happen. Sadly Evred’s love ended up remaining unrequited. Then I read the author’s timeline post series in which both do have happy lives – Inda back at the home he’d always longed for and the life he’d expected for himself and Evred with a family and a good rule before sailing off to explore the world with Tau – but where they ended up very rarely seeing each other ever again which as a shipper was simply tragic.
I would have loved for him to fall in love with Evred or at the very least for him to have stayed as Sierandael and for them to have kept their close friendship for the rest of their lives.
Cordelia Chase (Angel) – She spent one season (3) becoming increasing less like the character I knew and loved, the next (4) possessed by a god and then in a coma and ended her run in one great episode in the final season where she was back to being the character I loved. She should have lived to continue to fight and grow as a person and to once again be awesome.
Kim Hyun Joo (IRIS) – Ahhh – why would they do that?? Killing him at the end just as he and Seung Hee were happy and at that moment as he drives to meet her with a ring and she’s standing right there and arghhh. No. Clearly they were faking his death so that they could truly be free of IRIS and the whole spy life and are currently living a quiet and happy life in Kyoto. Sometime Sun Hwa visits.
Rory/Logan (Gilmore Girls) – Their break up never worked for me. Considering that only three episodes before he very specifically told her that he chose her and would support her choices (and then symbolically took her hand and path in the hay bale maze) TPTB breaking them up by having Logan give her an ultimatum makes no sense. For me at least, it come off as TPTB realising the show would probably be over and that they wanted Rory single at the end and so they concocted an excuse to break them up. It didn’t work for the characters or their relationship as it had been for the preceding two seasons. Plus I don’t buy that Logan would propose to Rory like that.
It would have made more sense for them to return to having a long-distance relationship while each explored their dream. I see them eventually getting married and having fulfilling careers and maybe having children or maybe not but either way just being happy together.
Bonus:
John Locke (Lost) – I didn’t think of him until I completed my list but I couldn’t leave him off. He had a horrible life of disappointment and then died when things were finally going right for him. It was tragic and he was my favourite character and I really wish that it had been him in season 5. I actually think Hurley would make a better Island Guardian but I still wish that Locke had lived to take up that role instead.
Also I realised while considering this that I could have filled the entire question with The Vampire Diaries answers. Oh, show.
