The New Deal

To be honest I was a bit underwhelmed? It was a good episode but I didn't adore it. There were a couple things I loved but mostly it was full of things I liked or was fairly neutral about.

• So Elena.

- Her reactions when Alaric woke and then immediately collapsed confused me a bit? She completely had a reason to freak out but we’ve seen her hold it together in much more tense situations before. Why did she call the paramedics instead of Damon or Caroline (or even Bonnie)? Especially when Klaus’s guy showed up and she acted like he had her trapped. I’m going to assume that Elena did try to call Damon and Caroline but neither were answering their phones otherwise it would really bother me. But still the way she was mostly just helplessly standing around bothered me.

- Then there was the end and her getting Damon to compel Jeremy to leave Mystic Falls. WTF Elena!? Arg, what are you doing?! This did not go well last time. I mean this time the reasoning is better – sending Jeremy out of Mystic Falls to be safe but not, I believe, messing with his memories so he can still protect himself if he needs to do so – but still! I don’t care that Alaric agreed with her, if everyone in their circle agreed it still wouldn’t make it the right choice, and she should know better. It really stuck out in this episode too because there was that earlier scene with Tyler all about free will. And you know if anyone did that to Elena or Damon, even if it was to protect them, they would be pissed. With reason. Oh, Elena. I completely understand her reasoning here, I do, but - honey, no. This isn't going to end well.

- But then on the other hand there was Elena vs Klaus which was awesome. I loved it. That is my girl. “You turned him into a monster. Now he’s your problem. And just so you know, I’m not the only one Rebekah wants dead. She knows what you did to your mother. She knows that you killed her. You can let yourself out.” I loved her expression after “you killed her”. I love how she deals with and handles him.

- For only the second time I was feeling Elena/Klaus. Apparently I ship her best when she is getting in the face of people more powerful than her, being bitchy/snarky and coming out on top. Elena is undoubtedly the safest person in the world from Klaus, as far as killing goes, so it probably does impact their interactions but I think Elena’s always been pretty... not fearless but brave and strong in her interactions with him and I love that. I can see them in a really dark, hate sex kind of way.

• Elena/Damon were excellent. I love how they've become a team. And THE KISS! I loved the kiss. I have feelings but I don't really know how to express them. Personally though I love how the show is handling them.

- 1 I’m very glad Damon told her the truth about Stefan’s ‘betrayal’. Especially that he did it before he kissed her.
- 2 I’m glad that Elena didn’t initiate the kiss. I think this episode still would have been too soon for that.

• I loved Elena slapping Stefan. Also Damon listening in on their talk.

• I love the whole idea of Stefan and Bonnie working together to take out Klaus.

• I love Damon joining Stefan and Bonnie. I loved all the Damon/Stefan - the zooming through the light beams to get to Stefan! - and I loved that Damon cajoled his way into teaming up with Stefan and immediately agreed to Stefan's terms. That said I hope that Elena isn’t left out of things for too long (possibly Bonnie can tell her.)

• So going by Alaric’s attitude at the bar does that mean that Alaric hasn’t forgiven Damon then?

“None of us are going to make it out of this town alive.” – Jeremy. You know, I kind of agree? At a certain point you just need to pack up and move.

• I hope that there are going to be more consequences for bringing Jeremy back to life. There needs to be. At first I though he’s attitude might be signalling a personality change but apparently that was just him being an ass. I’m still hoping for it to be more then ‘can see ghosts’ because on the balance that’s still not that great of a cost to have a loved one back. Actually can he even still see ghosts?

• Jeremy’s expression when he smirked at Elena after inviting Tyler in was so smug I wanted to smack him.

• I don’t know that giving the Original’s back to Klaus would be the best idea if only because then Klaus wouldn’t have any reason not to kill them all. But I wonder if they can’t use the Originals to their advantage? While Elijah betrayed them in the end it wasn’t because he was on Klaus’s side – he wanted his family. He’s an option. Actually when I saw the title I was really hoping that the ‘new deal’ would be between Elena/Elijah (version 3 4) or even Stefan/Elijah. Mainly I just want Elijah back.

“That’s why I hate witches. So fickle... and passive-aggressive.” – Damon. Heh.

• What I was actually thinking during Damon staking Stefan to get him to talk was ‘see Alaric! Damon = violence. It wasn’t personal!’

• Huh, the ‘Stefan did it to save Damon’ secret came out quick.

• I’m a bit sad that it doesn’t appear that Katherine is working with Stefan.

“Every time Klaus wants something somebody ends up dead.” – Jeremy. This would be a great time for him to have brought up Klaus murdering Jenna.

• So why is Alaric's ring not working? I wonder if it might be because he's not a Gilbert?

• Jeremy's hybrid kill was pretty impressive especially him coolly cutting off of Tony's head. Is this the first person Jeremy’s killed? He actually seemed pretty fine afterward and at the end. He was keeping it together. It would have been interesting to see where he went from there. I’m thinking Alaric’s newest apprentice. Also his interactions with Tyler would have been really interesting.

• Also, um, Jeremy very competent of you and all that but chopping someone’s head off on your front porch might not be the best idea!

• Meredith Fell! So Alaric’s new love interest clearly and considering that she’s a Fell probably (hopefully) a lot more. Mostly at the moment I think Alaric needs to be a lot more suspicious and even worried about her then he appears to be. Her “guardian angel or did you sell your soul to the devil” felt pretty ominous to me. In on the secret of the vampires y/y?

• The compelling of Jeremy was too bad because I really liked the idea of watching Elena and Jeremy training together and getting to spend more time on their relationship.

• So how likely is it that it’s going to turn out that Jeremy was back on vervain and Damon’s compulsion didn’t work? I’m giving it 50/50 at the moment.

• I like that I have no idea what Stefan is going to do next. So clearly his final goal is to kill Klaus but what is he going to get up to in the meantime?
