It: Chapter 2
May. 13th, 2020 12:27 amI liked it.
+ I didn't find it very scary. The Ms. Kersh sequence was the creepiest by far. The actual creature wasn't very scary but everything up until that point was great. The bleachers scene with poor Victoria was the most upsetting.
+ I really liked all the characters a lot and I loved the bond between all of them as a group. I'm so glad that it had a happy ending and they all remembered each other at the end. Mike and Bill's phone call was lovely. And I'm glad that Bev and Ben found happiness with each other.
+ I thought all the actors did really well. Older Stan was perfect and Eddie was excellent. I thought looks-wise McAvoy as Bill was the most miscast (I don't see the younger version growing up into the older version) but everything else about how he acted screamed Bill so he ended up working for me.
+ Richie and Eddie facing the three doors again and the sequence with the dog was really fun.
+ I really enjoyed the restaurant reunion scene (before the fortune cookies).
+ I loved the quarry scene. I loved the way everyone just converged on Richie when he broke down crying and immediately surrounded him, holding him where they could, and giving him silent support and love. It definitely felt like they all knew that his loss was just a little bit more, that they realised he was in love with Eddie.
+ I didn't really get the sense during much of the movie that Richie was specifically in love with Eddie. Struggling to accept his sexuality, yes. Rediscovering his great love for Eddie, eh. I didn't see anything like the looks that Ben kept throwing Bev, for example. He was all ready to abandon them, including Eddie, and Eddie wasn't brought up as a specific reason not to. Honestly it was really Richie's reaction to Eddie being stabbed and dying that sold his feelings. His refusal to accept that Eddie was dead and then him fighting the others all the way back up to the street to go back for Eddie was pretty devastating. I really liked him re-carving their initials on the bridge as his goodbye. But I wish we'd gotten something a little more obvious before the end.
+ I liked the clubhouse scenes.
+ Mike felt a bit sidelined compared to the others though I did like what we got with him. His intensity and desperation makes a lot of sense considering that he spent the last 27 years in Derry trying to find a way to stop Pennywise, remembering the entire time all the horror they went through and unable to share it with anyone, while also remembering his best friends who have forgotten him and moved on to better lives, and all of whom will die if he can't figure it out - it's a lot. I felt for him. Also I rather like how messed up he is - stealing the artifact, lying to the others about major things, drugging Bill. I liked that it was him who pulled Pennywise's heart out. I just wish he'd had his own journey at the end.
+ I really liked Ben and Bev saving each other.
+ I actually loved Stanley’s letter at the end and his explanation for his suicide. His line about being afraid his whole life and general reaction makes me think that he didn't forget as much as the others and when Mike called he got all his memories of Derry back at once (unlike the others who got them slowly). Richie says he was the weakest but I don't think he was. He wasn't able to deal with suddenly remembering everything, wasn't able to force himself to return to Derry, but honestly considering how hard everyone else took it while learning slowly I don't know that any of those would have been able to return either. But even if he couldn't return he still loved his friends and so did the best he could for them and I loved that loyalty aspect to it. I like that even though he dies at the beginning he still feels like a part of the story, he's still present.
+ Stan being the reason that Richie decides to stay, and thus is there to save Mike, was great.
+ Man, everyone really loves Bill don't they, lol. Stan thinking of Bill as he dies, Bev and the resurgence of their first love (so many great little moments between them + the kiss), Mike and basically everything (I love yous, Bill saving Mike, the drugging). It was great. Needed more Richie/Bill and Eddie/Bill and Ben/Bill.
+ I found Beverly a little too screamy? Like, things are scary but they never missed an opportunity to have her scream/cry out and it really ended up feeling like she was the girl so she could do that whereas with all the guys we only got a couple yells all together. It bothered me.
+ Bill's confrontation with his 'younger self'/guilt was freaking great.
