Very enjoyable episode.

Sky Ring

+ The cold open was really great. Hope meeting, becoming a family with and then losing Dev was all really well done. We only got 5 minutes of them and I loved them. I loved that even stabbed he saved her. He was one of my favourite there-and-gone characters this show has done and I'm sad he died and we won't get to learn more about him or see him again. [Also I am so curious about how things would have gone if Octavia/Diyoza hadn't been discovered and then Dev arrived.]

+ God, poor Orlando. I felt so much for him throughout the episode. Sitting alone in the forest playing chess with the dead. Being tricked into 'saving' Hope in a blatant play to make him sympathise with them. Training and becoming a friends with them only to be betrayed in the end. :( Him crying when his friends killed his other friends and he couldn't do anything about it was so sad. I liked him and it was hard to watch. We're told he committed suicide but I'm going to wait a bit longer till I believe that.

+ It really seemed to me that Echo didn't decide to kill all the Disciples until she saw Orlando's reaction to the one Hope killed but I do think that it was a possibility always in the back of her mind especially the idea of leaving Orlando and his split loyalty behind. With her history and how she was raised her choosing to kill them didn't surprise me at all. And for all that Orlando is their friend, and she obviously cares about him (she did leave him alive), his people are her enemies. They kidnapped her family. They are a danger to her new family group. I totally get why she felt she needed to do it. She was protecting her own.

That said I had an issue with it. I don't know if I'm missing something but Echo killing the other Disciples didn't make sense to me. Do they have a way off the planet after the anomaly closes or a way to communicate without their suits? Because I was pretty sure they didn't and if they couldn't get off then there doesn't seem to be a reason to kill them especially since she was leaving Orlando alive. Killing Orlando as well would have had it make sense - he can tell his people everything and has reason to now - but leaving him alive and killing the others? Doesn't make sense to me.

+ I found it interesting that when Echo started killing the unconscious Disciples Gabriel was the one arguing with her and trying to stop her while Hope was literally "we're running out of time, we have to go". She only spoke out when it came to Orlando. She and Echo both have people being held on the other side they want to save while Gabriel only has answers to questions so on that level it's unsurprising. Also for as much as Gabriel argues against it he doesn't actually physically try and stop Echo and he chooses to leave Orlando behind and follow them. Echo started it but it was absolutely a group betrayal.

+ Hope having that bookend moment where she saved Echo after failing to save Dev by not hesitating this time was great. She was so unemotional at Echo killing the Disciples that I wonder if she was in shock. It was her first kill after all.

+ I loved the forehead touch and holding each other between Hope and Echo after Hope saved her.

+ I really liked the face painting scene between the Sky Ring family. The friendliness and shared comradeship felt very real which made what happened at the end hit even harder. Seriously, poor Orlando. These three are literally the only people he's met outside his own people and he forges a bond with them and trusts and helps them and is then betrayed, and I feel so bad for him.

+ "Auntie O would have loved seeing you get your ass kicked." Hope laughing about this was great. It was a nice moment. But seriously Octavia was apparently really holding on to her grudge against Echo.

+ Echo talking to the plants, and bringing up Monty's algae negatively and then apologising to him, was really cute.

+ The Gabriel/Orlando talk about gods and false gods was great. "Men condone those things. Weak men follow their orders."

+ Octavia teaching Hope mythology was sweet. Bellamy would be so proud.

+ No one apparently asked Orlando what his preoccupation with Hope was about which is weird because it is very obviously there (he knew she liked pumpkins) and I want to know. My best guess is that he knew Diyoza and learned about Hope from her (which means they were friends) and that perhaps he even got himself purposefully sent to Sky Ring to protect her? That would make everything so much sadder. Or he learned about Hope from Diyoza/Octavia's extracted memories and was either sent there by Anders or choose to break a rule so he'd be sent there. Something more was happening there and I can't wait to find out.

+ It's interesting that in the first episode Echo was haunted by Roan and original!Echo and faced with the question of who she is if she isn't following someone but even after five years she is still completely focused on rescuing Bellamy and even says that she doesn't know 'what she will do if she loses him', and so apparently still hasn't faced that question. I hope this means this is something we get to watch her question and come to a conclusion about.

+ So... the ‘The Shepherd” is totally Cadogan, right? The whole Level 12 thing screams his Second Sun cult from Earth. I think the Stone/planet that is inaccessible is Earth. I think Cadogan found an Anomaly Stone on Earth, figured it out, caused the bombs to fall (after all we never did learn who the ‘crazy bastard’ was that let ALIE loose) and evacuated his most loyal followers to Bardo via wormhole. Hmm, he was on Earth when Becca landed because we know he had her burned at the stake so I’m not sure of the timeline there but other than that it makes sense to me. The 'Disciples' are an entirely warrior-based cult who seem to have been preparing for the last war of humanity which is also interesting.

+ So Clarke, Raven, Miller, Niylah and Jordan are off on their own little planet-hopping side adventure. I'll be honest I'd rather it'd been Murphy and Emori with the first three but I am interested in seeing how this group manages and I hope their side trip ends up leading them to learning helpful information or gaining something that will help them.

+ I love that even with everything else happening Clarke didn't accept Raven's "everything's fine" and took the time to talk to her about her trauma. I loved Clarke drawing on her many experiences with similar circumstances to reach out to Raven and give her advice - it wasn't your fault, you won't forget their face but remember those you saved. It was really nice scene.

+ Man, when Raven goes grey (ie: accepts she's grey) she just goes all in! Her killing eight (!) Disciples and saving everyone was a badass moment but also obviously really horrifying for Raven. Was this really the first time she actively killed someone herself? Huh.

+ I found Jordan being the one to reassure Raven that "it's okay, we did it" really strange considering his commitment to not killing people and judgyness at those who do. He looked really taken aback when she was so brisk with him and it felt off.

+ "You're smart, brave and willing to risk your own life. Too bad you're not willing to risk the lives of your friends." a) They were being all badass and it was great but Clarke and the others really should have seen that coming because they know the Disciples can go invisible. b) Probably Clarke going alone would have been safer since they wanted her alive? c) Always good when people appreciate Clarke. d) So did they get this from Diyoza, Octavia or Bellamy? Or I guess all three. Or maybe there's time travel involved.

+ "Our leader believes that you are the key to winning the last war mankind will ever wage." Ah, it was about Clarke. Hmm. And then at their meeting he wants Clarke to answer some questions - so what does Clarke know that makes her specifically so important? Perhaps something to do with ALIE? If it's a Cadogan cult than perhaps ALIE is who he figured they'd need to defeat/fight 'the last war' against?

+ I love that Clarke is classified as "considered armed and extremely dangerous", hell yeah she is!

+ Gaia getting grabbed shocked me. I was so sure that she'd be a part of the Sanctum storyline and that she's not leaves me feeling really uncertain about her fate. I don't understand what role she has to play in the Bardo storyline and if she is now more or less likely to die. If she meets up with Bellamy first I'm going to be so amused.

+ I had a couple big issues with the end of the episode:

- I am really surprised they didn't even consider putting on the armour before going through the anomaly. Sure they could just be a uniform but maybe they're important for travel through the wormhole. They don't know. And as Miller states they don't know what will be on the other side and being in armour would give some protection and/or camouflage. Plus they'd all have access to the helmet information. Plus the whole plan is to save their friends who are being held captive so being in the suits would let them blend in when they first go through. I'd have expected it to at least be brought up. At least say the suits were too damaged or the Anomaly is closed and they don't have time to figure out how to reopen or something. I needed an actual discussion between them for why they weren't all suiting up.

- Actually the fact that they decided to immediately go through without any preparation made me shake my head. They didn't even read the note! They didn't consider that knowing nothing about this technology or where they're going they might want to grab some supplies beforehand. It was really rushed and I'm not really sure why. I feel like they should have had the Disciple emphasis more the drastic time difference maybe to make to Clarke's rush more believable? I don't know.

- I'm also a very 'what the hell' about the fact that they apparently went to meet this new group of humans without bringing the others into the know ie, Murphy, Emori, Indra and Jackson. Or that Raven/Jordan left to rescue Clarke and the others without, again, telling anybody about it! WTF? I'm going to wait till next week because it's entirely possible that one of them did tell the others and we just didn't see the scene but if not I'm going to be so mad because that is beyond dumb. And dumb in a way I don't believe from any of these characters. If Clarke had time to go back to tell Raven/Jordan then there was time for Miller/Gaia/Niylah to tell the others.

- It bugged me a little that Clarke didn't leave a message with Gaia to take to Madi (even like I love you or I promise I'll be back). They're jumping to another planet via a wormhole they don't understand!

+ I liked Gaia immediately jumping in to offer to stay and watch over Madi. The Gaia/Clarke hug was lovely.

+ I liked Miller being snarky with Clarke but still going with her to try and save their people.

+ "Before we screwed everything..." Uh, Jordan, remember how they murdered Clarke and stole her body? How they were going to burn everyone at the stake. The Primes murdered Delilah! Geez. Spacekru definitely cause their share of mayhem but I'm putting most of this on the Primes.

+ I liked Raven apologising to Jordan for them all not coming for him quicker after he was stabbed. He really got sidelined last season, and not even just at the end, so I really hope they build his bonds with our main cast this season.

+ It was nice to see Niylah as part of Clarke's team. I loved her 'uh duh' "Of course she is" about Clarke going to the shield. I liked her having Clarke's back. Her deciding to join her in going through the anomaly and their little smiles at each other were great.

+ Also this means nothing but Clarke listing their friends as 'Bellamy, Echo and Octavia' and then later Raven listing them as 'Bellamy, Octavia and Echo' stuck out to me. I'd definitely have thought they'd order the last two differently based on their relationships with Echo.

+ On next week: I am so worried for the five of our people left in Sanctum. Madi is the only one who I'm honestly sure will survive. I think Murphy and Emori are probably good, it's too soon to kill off a character that important right? Right? Jackson, eh, I'm not actually that worried about him? Meanwhile Indra has me chewing my nails in anxiety. She's had such a bigger role this season (awesome) but as the leader of the remains of Wonkru she is a direct threat to Sheidheda and there is no way she'd bow down to him. Plus she's the last of the parent generation. So so worried. I feel like there is going to be a lot of death next episode (goodbye children of Gabriel??) With the other storylines Gaia and Niylah are the ones I'm worried most about. Oh, and Diyoza. I don't think she's having a good time and she's at the top of my death watch list.
