Dead to Me Thoughts
Jun. 17th, 2020 11:27 pmEpisodes 1 - 5
I watched the first five episodes and I am really enjoying it. A couple thoughts:
+ I love Judy and Jen's relationship so much. I love how they get each other and they way they connected so quickly. I love how they are together, the ways they support each other and try to help, and even fight and make up. I love how open they are with each other.
"Wow, you are co-dependent. ... Is it weird that I like it?" - Jen
"I love that you like it." - Judy
+ Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini are amazing. They are really hitting it out of the park. They have great chemistry together.
+ I like both Jen and Judy as characters. I love Jen's anger and how unafraid she is to show it and to stand up for herself. I like Judy's desire to see the best in people and situations and her awkwardness is very relatable.
+ "What kind of friendship is based on lies? And manslaughter." - Steve
"... A layered one?" - Judy
I love the tension the screwed up lie that is hovering over their friendship brings and how it's playing out. What Judy did in inserting herself into Jen's life, in basically becoming her best friend and rock to lean on and making friendly with her sons, is deeply messed up. But the show has somehow managed to still make me like Judy (and adore Judy/Jen) and believe that she is at heart a genuinely kind person who does just desperately want to help try and fix what she broke. And I think she is actually making things better for them, for now at least. I'm sure when the truth comes out it's not going to be pretty.
+ I love how casually feminist this series is. Moments that stuck out: Jen calling Charlie on the 'man of the house' bullshit with "I’m the woman of the house and you’re the kid.", Jen's righteous anger at men calling women crazy/nuts as a way to invalidate them, Judy telling Jen "Don't be a woman who blames the woman.". I also liked Jen's line about believe that Judy's miscarriage was a real baby for her because she heard a heartbeat and fell in love - just not if a Republican is asking.
+ I love the swearing. I just do. You don't hear it a lot, certainly not like this, and yet sometimes there are characters like Jen who have a fucking mouth on them! And it's weird sometimes that we don't see those people more often even when it would make more sense for them to swear.
+ Man, poor Judy wants to be found out so badly. The relief when she confessed to the detective (about the wrong thing), and then in episode 5 her introducing Nick to Jen and her huge smile - oh, honey.
+ That Judy listened to Steve that night and left the scene and hid the evidence sand that it might have led to Ted’s death should be enough reason to not trust him. Possibly Ted would have died anyway but he didn’t die from the impact but instead bled out and if they had acted responsibly and with compassion they might have saved him. Steve’s opinion on anything shouldn’t be trusted. As a lawyer he made the situation worse especially for himself. He was a witness when it happened and made himself an accomplice.
I think that more than anything is why he tried to get back together with Judy. He was freaked out because she was inserting herself in the widow's life and he clearly knows that it's eating her up inside and she wants to confess. He was, seemingly, able to move past the incident but she wasn't and I think that's really why they broke up. Now he's worried and he sought to get her back under his control and sight. I find myself wondering if he might not be more of a danger than expected if he thinks the truth might be discovered.
+ Steve and Judy’s thing where he does a thing, she reprimands him, he says ‘sorry’ and she replies ‘it’s okay’ kind of amused me.
+ I felt bad for Bambi. She's dating a guy for over a year and he's helping her with her career and then suddenly he ghosts her. He pops back up months later only for their meeting at her work to instead be a woman claiming to be his (dead) wife and telling her he's dead before leaving. That sucks. I hope she shows up again and gets some resolution. I'd like an actual scene between Jen and Bambi talking about Ted and what happened.
+ Abe telling Judy to let him know if she needed backup because he had nothing to lose made me immediately wonder if he might not end up coming forward to take the blame for Ted's hit-and-run in order to protect Judy. Much the same way Judy took the blame for Jen's actions. He loves Judy and he thinks she's a good person. I can see him saying he was driving the car.
