5x10 ‘Vincent and the Doctor’

This was a good episode; pretty emotional.

• The Doctor taking Vincent to the museum at the end, and him getting to hear how loved and respected his work was, made me cry.

• I really liked how they portrayed Vincent Van Gogh’s depression and how the Doctor (and Amy) didn’t heal him while also showing how they did add to the happiness in his life. The Doctor’s talk with Amy at the end was great. I also thought the scene where the Doctor finds Vincent in his room, and how it played out, perfect.

“I suppose we could just try talking to him. It might be interesting to know his side of the story.” – Doctor. What I love about this is that it takes something that is/comes off as a stereotypical monster and makes it a person. The Doctor comforting him as he died made me teary-eyed.

• I loved the three of them laying hand-in-hand staring at the night sky as Vincent explained to them how he saw. It was lovely and sad. Also liked how the sky swirled into The Starry Night as Vincent explained.

• I did think Mr. Black’s description of Vincent was a bit... much. The first time I watched I was too emotional about it but I watched the scene a couple more times and it stuck out more. I realise it’s just Mr. Black’s opinion but some of it got so effusive that it was a bit - distracting. ’no one had ever done it before’ with regards to him using his pain in his art made me go ‘oh, really?’ as did him calling Vincent ‘one of the greatest men who ever lived’.

• A list of other likes:

- the Doctor’s gizmo show One and Two as it identified him.
- Vincent and Amy bonding over sadness
- "Is this how time normally passes? Realllly slooowly..." LOL at bored Doctor
- On Vincent thinking he’s unarmed the Doctor disagrees because he has – “Overconfidence, this and a small screwdriver.” Heh. That seems exactly right. (Except of course his exclusion of ‘companion’ because he always has one of those as well.)
- Amy following the Doctor because “of course” made me smile. She’s a Companion, of course she’d follow. It’s what they do.
- the TARDIS being papered over at the end.
- Vincent apologising to Mr. Black about his beard (it made me smile)
- Vincent being embarrassed that one of his haystacks was in the museum gallery.

5x11 ‘The Lodger’

I really enjoyed this episode. I thought it was a lot of fun.

• I liked Craig a lot. He was pretty adorable.

• The Craig/Doctor interactions were excellent – loved the Doctor being all caring with him after he became sick, and Craig giving the Doctor a set of keys to the flat, even knowing the Doctor would never return.

• I loved the Doctor sending a cat to spy for him and then chatting with it about what has been happening.

• I also for the most part loved him trying to play human and not doing it so well. In fact it made me realise that this Doctor is a lot more... scattered. He can’t blend as well as Nine and Ten. They did human pretty well, with their own spin, but Eleven is very mad scientist.

• The head butt passing of information that the Doctor did with Craig was ridiculous and funny, though slightly more on the former. Why exactly was a head butt needed? Couldn’t he have done it in some less violent way?

• I liked that we skipped completely over the initial reactions after the teaser and went straight into the Doctor doing something about it (having already re-established contact with Amy and discovered where the issue is coming from).

• I can’t tell if seeing the ring box has made Amy remember or not but I’m thinking yes. I love that the Doctor has been carrying it around in his pocket.

• I am a bit confused about the ship. Was it actually a TARDIS? I thought that’s what the Doctor said and it did sort of look like it but then it didn’t appear to work like one, and it wasn’t compatible with the Doctor. Plus he didn’t have any angst moment about there being another TARDIS around so... no? Something like a TARDIS but not? Then at the end... what happened to it? Was it destroyed?

• The whole ‘science’ of why it wanted people was ridiculous but handwaves.

• A thread I’ve noticed throughout this season is the Doctor not knowing things about the TARDIS so it just stuck out to me how well he seemed to know it in this episode.
