I enjoyed it.

I loved how it ended with Melanie making the realisation that she didn’t need to sacrifice herself to save the humans because they, the second gen zombies, deserved to live too and it was their world now.

I loved Melanie. Helen was great. I loved the relationship between the two of them. I loved Melanie’s possessiveness of Helen and Helen’s compassion and care for Melanie. I liked at the end Melanie taping the pictures that had so helped her in her cell onto Helen's prison window for her. It was such a great little touch - sweet but also emphasising the change in circumstances.

Poor Helen. She survived but being trapped forever, alone (and never to touch another person), in that small space is rather horrifying. I did like her going back to teaching the children and trying to help them.

I ended up surprised by liking Parks by the end. He was such a dick at the beginning but by the end I was sad about his death. I like that he went out into the city to find Melanie and died because he’d started to care. That death scene between them was really well done.

I loved that little moment where Melanie tells them to "pretend you’re scared of me" and Parks quietly mutters to himself "pretend?" because up until this point he's been afraid of Melanie simply because of what she was in a rather generic way but her fighting the other children changed it to Melanie specifically in herself being fearsome.

I liked Caldwell too. She was doing horrible things but you absolutely understand why she was doing it all. In a different movie she’d be one of the heroes. I also liked her death and that moment when you see the acceptance on her face and the acknowledgement of how strangely appropriate/ironic it was.

I liked Melanie's slow bonding with the people around her but also how her possessiveness of them felt slightly off. Her hitting back at Parks at the beginning that Helen liked her best, her growled "They're mine, you can't have them" to the other zombie children. I loved her panicked worry for Kieran, though I wish we'd had a little more bonding between them during the journey.

Poor Kieran. His death hit hard and I wondered if Melanie would have been able to save him if she’d gone for him first instead of going for help. I think yes. The whole scene with the kid luring him with the bird and then them surrounding him was very creepy and well done.

I could have done without the animal death but it wasn’t unexpected for the genre. I’m choosing to believe the dog survived. I do find it difficult to believe that that cat and dog survived so long in the city with all those horde of mindless zombies.

It occurred to me if the zombies eat anything living this could really badly affect any ecosystem where there’s a horde.
