Glee 1x11 Thoughts

It’s been a while since I watched this show and I don’t know if that’s the reason but I had a hard time with this episode. I found the episode embarrassing or boring and I felt like a lot of what happened was very contrived. It could just be a really bad episode.
What I did like:
• I loved the final New Directions song – it was lovely and it was nice having Tina as lead vocal for a change.
• Quinn hugging Will was really the only emotional moment of the episode and I found it moving.
• I liked Rachel’s first make-over outfit. I thought it was sexy and she looked wonderful in it though it was clearly more party appropriate then school appropriate.
• The small moment between Rachel and Kurt at the end with them connecting through shared unrequited love for the same guy and it hopefully means them becoming actual friends.
Then there was everything else:
• Kurt was vicious and hateful with Rachel in the scene in her bedroom. It was pretty painful to watch (‘horrible personality’ & ‘hard to be in the same room with her’) but I think the worst part was Rachel’s reaction, or rather non-reaction to it. She was clearly really hurt but she didn’t snap back at him or kick his ass; instead she sat there, hurt and sad, and listened to him. Oh, Rachel.
I think their confrontation at his locker sums it up –
“I thought you were my friend.”
“And what made you think that?”
...because Rachel’s never had a friend and doesn’t know how it goes and she did think that. I really felt bad for her.
• The whole thing about Rachel needing a makeover seemed ridiculous to me especially when they cut to her in the pantsuit because that’s not how Rachel dresses. Kurt and Quinn not liking her style would make sense, though I personally do (for the most part) but the show was purposefully trying to imply she dressed in a way that she very clearly doesn’t, as we’ve seen in the last ten episodes. Have we ever seen her in a pantsuit before? No. It’s stupid. In fact I don’t think we’ve ever seen her that covered up before. Quinn deciding that Rachel would need a makeover in order to attract Finn’s attention made me wonder if the writer of the episode had even seen the other episodes of the show, or if perhaps my hiatus from it was making me forget everything because I am sure that there was this whole storyline about Quinn freaking out about Rachel and Finn. What happened to that?
Then we get Finn’s little speech to her about how the whole sexy Olivia Newton John look is not her which also felt really contrived. Rachel was in that specific getup not at school as a new everyday look but as a costume during a song. Now granted she wore a similar outfit, on the sexiness scale, to school that day but for Finn to jump to the conclusion that Rachel is changing her look and thus feel the need to give his opinion you would think there would be an actual reason for him to think so. One day and a song appropriate costume while practising privately with him does not make a change in her style. It just bugged me. Finn’s “You look like a sad clown hooker.” did amuse me somewhat though I thought she was doing a perfect impression Sandy and looked sexy (though not as much as in the first outfit).
• I found Kendra’s kids being enthusiastic to watch a live action movie video and then being so taken by Quinn’s soft rendition of Papa Don’t Preach so contrived. Ditto with her and Puck apparently giving them all baths and putting them easily to bed. But it’s the first part – their fascination by Quinn and Puck’s song – that I really don’t buy. Whatever.
• Puck’s cluelessness with Quinn made me roll my eyes. The whole thing with Santana and Puck hooking up again – would he really have been sexting her while with Quinn or be with her at all considering how much he wants to get back together with Quinn and raise the baby with her? It just seems so ridiculous to me and I just don’t buy that he would be that dumb about it. Santana seemed to be pretty possessive about Puck which makes me wonder if she thinks they’re dating again? I also wonder why she didn’t bring up Finn at all in their conversation since he’s a pretty big part of the equation too.
