The Old Guard
Sep. 29th, 2020 11:38 pmI really enjoyed it. I hope there's a sequel.
+ I'm not really worried about Andy's mortality. The sense I got at the end was that there could be a chance she could regain her immortality.
+ Andy/Nile were wonderful. I love that at the same time Andy loses her immortality Nile gains it - and it's through Nile that Andy regains her desire to live and help people. The plane fight was so much fun and I love how Andy was clearly really enjoying herself especially in contrast to how weary and done with everything she'd been up till this scene. And how impressed she seemed by Nile. I loved that Andy let Nile go and then as soon as Nile realises something is wrong she runs back to help Andy. I loved Nile protecting Andy. I loved how well they worked together to kill Merrick. I loved Andy's arm around Nile as they walk away from the scene of the crime.
+ Joe/Nicky were great. I really loved all the little moments between them and how obviously devoted to each other they were. Like the spooning while asleep, or the wink, or the head bump. I loved both scenes where Nicky is dead and Joe anxiously waits for him to wake, dreading that he won't.
+ I liked the Andy/Booker relationship. I love that her, the oldest, and him, the youngest, start the movie in a very similar place of being just so tired of living. Her because of the weight of the millennias she's lived and all she's lost and him still stuck with the grief of his mortal life. I loved the scene where she realises he betrayed her and her screaming, and then his reaction when he realises that she's not healing and his desperation. It was great. I loved their goodbye at the end.
+ The fight scenes were excellent. Loved them. I love the way they all fight. I love how they fought as a team - as if they were one person. I love how everyone protected Andy during the skyscaper fight. I also love that even after all the centuries they still use swords and axes. Andy's labrys is neat and I loved Nile taking it from Merrick's body and giving it back to her at the end.
+ I love how much a force of nature Andy is.
+ I loved the reveal about the affect they have had on the world. That it's not just that they save people who will be important but that they save people who later down the line bring about someone else who does something important.
+ I loved what little we saw of Andy/Quynh and wanted more. "Just you and me. / Until the end." Love it.
+ Quynh's fate was heartbreaking.
+ Booker's betrayal was obvious when Andy returned to the old church to find his body still there. There is no reason he wouldn't have been taken with the others except that he was working for their enemies. His reasoning was cliched but understandable (it's a cliche for a reason.) I really loved how his betrayal and the others reactions to it was played. Yeah, they're mad but also they are all they have in the world. They are the only ones they can count on. So they're angry and they punish him at the end but they also trust him at their back and immediately fall back into being the team they are and are sad at his banishment.
+ I liked Copley but I wish we'd had more of him and more of him interacting with the immortals.
+ I liked the little scene with the cashier helping Andy with her wound. I loved her whole 'I'm helping you, one day you'll help someone' and how that parallels with how Andy and her team live their life and it foreshadowing Andy's renewed hope by the end.
+ I loved Nile's all-female Marine team.
+ I'm not sure that killing Merrick would really be enough to protect them even with Copley's help. At the very least they probably should have killed amoral Dr. Kozak who knows all about them and tried to destroy the samples they left behind.
+ I was surprised that there was no mention of trying to find Quynh at the end. Her fate and Andy's choice to stop looking obviously still haunt her and Nile's dreams of her clearly brought that back to the surface. I can understand them giving up back when it happened but in the 21st century it's a whole new world. There's sonar, metal detectors, equipment that can take them to the bottom of the ocean. Even without knowing the exact location there has never been a better chance of finding her. And with Andy's renewed purpose in life and her new mortality, as well as the fact that they have outside backing, I would have though it would be the first thing on Andy's mind. So it felt off that there was no mention of her at all.
