Swamp Thing Thoughts
Oct. 30th, 2020 11:03 pmI liked it okay. I went in hearing a lot of good things about it and perhaps that gave me too high of expectations. I found it a solid series but not one that I got very invested in.
+ There were so many loose ends left after the final episode that it actually did make me disappointed that the show had been cancelled. I'm sure that wasn't the end of Lucilia or Maria but it was a terrible place to leave both of them. Would Lucilia be taken by the Swamp or the Darkness in it to become another Swamp creature?
Poor Mat. I feel for him that he's going to have to live with the fact that he didn't listen to Leroy and make up with his mom before her death. It's going to haunt him. I feel like the obvious route to go from there was Matt seeking revenge against Avery and I'm just not interested in seeing that.
Then there are questions like: where's Harlan, what did take Shauna, what changes are happening to Jason, can Caroline be saved from her locked-in syndrome, why is Avery coughing up swamp foliage?
+ I liked Abby/Alec fine but found them so much more interesting after the reveal that Alec was dead. It made me genuinely invested in their growing relationship. So of course that's when the show ends, sigh.
+ I loved the reveal that the real Alec had died in the Swamp. It made Swamp Thing an even more interesting character to me and going forward that was the thing I was most interested in seeing explored. The finale talk between him and Alec was a great scene.
+ The reveal that Maria and Lucilia were conspiring together to murder Avery was excellent. I just wish we'd gotten more from that tense alliance though I get why we didn't. And I was disappointed that Avery came back and managed to take out both of them so easily.
+ I liked Abby and Liz. I wish they'd done more with Liz being a reporter and her looking into everything.
+ I liked the Abby/Harlan friendship and wish he'd been in the show more.
+ That short scene between Maria and Ellery was very intriguing, they had great chemistry and I wanted more.
+ Caroline Woodrue was excellent. I loved what we saw of her personality when not affected by her Alzheimers and her being the one to think of sedating Daniel and doing it was great.
+ Abby and Liz leaving Caroline alone in the house when it was clear that she was not having a good day (the kettle) felt really irresponsible. They should have called someone about her - have a friend/family member come to sit with her, call the hospital/police, just something.
+ Those scenes between Jason and Caroline in the final episode were really creepy.
+ Daniel was fine as a character and I liked the Blue Devil attacking to soldiers scene but in the end he felt rather pointless as a character?
+ TPTB were such cowards in having Abby kiss Alec while hallucinating him as human instead of as Swamp Thing. Not even a kiss at the end? Boo.
+ Lucilia really doesn't strike me as the sort of person who would helplessly scream for help over at least trying to use her phone to either call for help, to tell someone that Avery was her murderer in order to take him down too and/or to talk to her son one last time/warn him.
+ I always hate it when a show gives a main character some dark secret and then eventually flashback reveals that actually it's not dark at all and the character is completely innocent of whatever horrible thing and so getting that with Abby was pretty annoying. I wish there had been more of an explanation of why she completely blanked on Shawna being dragged away.
