Kong: Skull Island
Nov. 29th, 2020 05:40 pmI really enjoyed it, to my surprise.
I wish they'd built up the Weaver/Kong relationship. We got him worried when she is knocked off the cliff, him leaving the skullcrawler to save her from the water and his protectiveness of her but I wanted more and definitely more build to that. She's the beauty to his beast and their relationship should be important. I really think/wish that they had extended their first meeting. Making that the first time she touches him, have him carry her away to see some of the beauty of the island and giving them a moment of calm and bonding would have been great. That said I love that their initial meeting happens when she tries to save the water buffalo creature and thus Kong's interest in her isn't because she's there or pretty but because he sees her as a protector like him, and thus someone he can maybe trust.
I did really like the Weaver/Conrad/Kong scene. I kind of wish, if that's how they were going to play it, they'd had Conrad step up and touch Kong too.
I loved the humans trying to help Kong several times. Brooks showing up in the boat at the end to save Kong was a great moment.
I like that there wasn't a romance. You can see Conrad/Weaver maybe going in that direction but as far as what happens on screen they're just two people who bonded and became friends and allies in a terrible situation. And it was nice! I really liked both Weaver and Conrad, they were both great. I also really liked the bond they formed and they way they kept gravitating towards each other and I totally bought them growing to care about each other so quickly. I just loved that there was no kiss or overt romance. I wish more movies would skip the romance when it's not necessary.
I actually like Weaver and Conrad so much that I'm really sad that they aren't going to be in any more of these movies. I think they're probably my favourite human characters from these big monster movies (the Godzillas, other Kong movies). Them being kidnapped into working for Monarch in the after credits scene was great and it just made me want to see what happens next with them even more.
I love that it's Conrad who keeps stepping up to be the peacemaker, and meanwhile Weaver keeps getting in Packard's face.
I loved Conrad grabbing Weaver's camera as he ran to her unconscious body.
I really liked that Weaver never became a sudden badass fighter. She took out one of the skullcrawlers using her intelligence but she's only able to fight back as much as non-combatant is capable of.
Cole’s attempted heroic sacrifice failing because the giant Skullcrawler was smarter than they realised and knocks him into a cliff was sort of amazing. I was really not expecting it which made it great.
I'm not really sure why San Lin was even in the movie. She was just sort of there. Didn't do anything or say much or add to the story in any way. I don't dislike her being there but I don't really understand it. Considering that she's a biologist did her story end up getting cut?
Another movie that gives us a biologist character + all new unknown species and then does absolutely nothing with her. It's annoying. If you're going to add a biologist in these situations let them damn well have a purpose or don't make the character a biologist in the first place.
The giant Skullcrawler switching to chasing Conrad instead of continuing its attack on the boat that is firing at it was so stupid. If it's smart enough to realise that Cole was a trap it's smart enough not to chase the random person running away rather than take out the danger to itself. Like if the boat ran out of ammo and he was shooting it with a grenade launcher or something, okay. As is that whole tiny and pointless moment made no sense and seemed to be there only to give Conrad a hero moment that wasn’t needed.
I kind of thought that they were going to kill the skullcrawler that ate Randa (and the random soldier) whole and manage to cut them out of it's stomach alive. The camera kept flashing for so long!
The island natives, the Iwi, were definitely done better than any other King Kong movie. Them not speaking at all was iffy but they looked very cool and I wanted to know more about their society and how they existed on the island. I wish at least one of them had been an actual character in the movie.
I liked Marlow a lot. I'm glad he got his happy ending (even if his wife apparently waited for him for 29 years which was very ????) but I wish we could have seen more of him and Gunpei on the island or for Gunpei to have still been alive when they got there.
There were some really stunning shots especially at the beginning with the helicopters. Overall it was a really good looking film.
I loved all the megafauna we saw and how they were used. The massive spider was super creepy and that was a great scene. The massive squid being in such a shallow area seemed unlikely but I also liked it's short fight with Kong. I loved the stick insect and water buffalo. I could have done with more strange and amazing creatures. Even showing them in the background without them being an active danger would have been nice. The CGI was great.
Chapman dying was too bad because his solo journey was kind of interesting and I would have liked to have seen more of it and how it might have changed him. Saving him was really only an excuse for Packard so if he'd kind of disappeared at that point in the story instead of dying and then be revealed at the end living with the Iwi that could have been neat.
