His Dark Materials 2x06 & 2x07 Thoughts
Jan. 9th, 2021 11:14 pmI really enjoyed this season. I thought it was better than season one. Although it having seven episodes was rather odd. ... oh wait, it just occurred to me why there could be one less episode. That's really disappointing because this was such a great season. I wonder what would have been in that missing episode?
2x06 'Malice'
+ Wow, I love Mrs. Coulter. She's so awful but so amazing. This was an excellent episode for her showcasing both. Her facing down the spectres and controlling them, A+. She is just about the scariest person I can think of to be given that ability. The fact that she saw what they could do and chose to approach them rather than run was her in a nutshell, as was the fact that she saw the effects of the spectres and her reaction is to immediately think how it could help her (terrible, terrible) work. Her not only killing Boreal but then rubbing her betrayal and complete lack of care or respect for him in as he dies her was so cold. I loved it.
+ Poor Boreal. So hot, so outmatched by Mrs. Coulter. He genuinely seemed to be in love with her and it blinded him to the fact that she did not care at all. I felt for him to be betrayed into death by the one he loves most just as he believes he's finally gotten everything he wanted. That said I can't see it ending any other way.
+ I really do love Mary. She's great. Her scene with Angelica and Paola was lovely. The hug made me so sad for the girls.
+ I haven't mentioned them but I like the Lee/Jopari scenes. I like how they work against each other. Jopari/Parry being a Shaman is interesting and I want to know more about it.
2x07 'Æsahættr
+ Hmm, I did like last season's finale more. It felt epic and ended at what felt like a really appropriate exciting spot. This season's finale felt more scattered, like this season is missing that big final scene - or missing the actual finale.
+ Leeee! :( I really wasn't expecting him to die! (I didn't read past the first book.) If only they had thought to call Seraphina earlier. He didn't even get to see Lyra (or Iorek) again. "Don't you go before I do" - :( I'm so sad.
+ Poor terrorised golden monkey. It's an impressive amount of fucked up to be so abusive towards yourself. I was very tense when Marisa reached out and let him rub his head against her hand all while talking about doing whatever it takes to protect Lyra. That whole scene I kept waiting for her to kill him. If anyone could find a way to survive killing their own daemon and then do it, it would be her.
+ I was a bit disappointed with how Lee and Jopari's journey ended. What did Jopari even accomplish in meeting Will? Telling him to join Asriel? I mean it was nice to see them reunited and I'm so glad that Will got to see his father, it was a nice scene but then Jopari died so quickly. At the very least he could have kept his promise to Lee and told Will that there was a girl named Lyra he needed to protect.
+ I didn't think we'd see Asriel this season so that scene with him gaining the support of the Angels was great.
+ With everyone ending up on the same world I was expecting all of the separate storylines to converge and for everyone to meet at the same time and then was slightly disappointed when that didn't happen.
+ I'm glad that Angelica and Paola were returned to the adults but a) why didn't the adults take the children with them in the first place, and b) even if those city children were the orphans why didn't they leave the city to find the adults themselves? Also is that where all the other children went?
