Everything about Yeon and Rang is so sad. I just want them to be happy brothers again! Frankly that's all Rang wants too even if he won't admit it. He was so devastated when Yeon said he wished he hadn't saved him. :( He was upset when Yeon revealed that he'd always let Rang win their games but I think it wasn't just out of embarrassment and anger but also because it was a sign of how Yeon used to love and care for him. Those flashbacks were really cute.
One thing that sticks out was how Yeon's aloof/cold attitude was there from their first meeting when he wasn't actively kind or comforting with scared and alone Rang. His smile when Rang followed him indicated to me that he would have saved Rang regardless but the way he approached Rang made me facepalm a bit. And yet it's completely true to what we've seen of Yeon in the future and I want to be like 'dude, just give your brother a hug!'
Yeon telling Rang that he wished he hadn't saved him because then they wouldn't have been brothers was really harsh but I feel like the main meaning behind it was Yeon expressing his regret over what Rang had gone though and the pain that he'd suffered and what he'd become because of it. I don't think, despite his aloofness with Rang, that Yeon doesn't truly care for him.
I love that even with Yeon choosing him and showing up to save him Rang still smacked his helping hand away. I hope thought that this will push Rang back on the right path and that he, and his relationship with Yeon, will begin to heal.
I loved Yeon choosing Rang but it was very surprising. I think there is something more behind his choice than we saw. Does he know they're trapped in their nightmares and where they are (the forest of ghosts vs the crash she survived last time) and chose based on who had the higher chance of dying and needed his immediate help? Does he think Ji Ah is mentally stronger and could face her fears better than Rang could? Has he guessed that Imugi wants Ji Ah alive and decided that she was safe even without his immediate help? Did Shin Joo show up and Yeon sent him to help Ji Ah? I do think he loves his brother but he is so crazily over-protective of Ji Ah that I really can't see him not picking her if he was certain she would die.
It bothered me that Ji Ah spent the episode crying and heartbroken to disturbed and scared to crying and terrified. In context it all makes sense - having lived the memories of Yeon killing her (and seemingly feeling all Ah Eum's emotions too) and him confirming he was only using her is reason enough to be heartbroken and cry over it, seeing your younger self possessed and then that figure on the tape seemingly seeing you watching it is absolutely disturbing, and being stuck in your worst nightmare and helpless to escape is terrifying. It's just all together in one episode it made me sigh hard.
The scene of Ji Ah watching the video of her child self was creepy.
I loved the kids singing leading Rang and Ji Ah into their nightmares.
I was surprised Rang didn't recognise the nightmare ahjumma as non-human.
Ugh, lying to 'protect' the person you love is one of my least favourite tropes. That annoyed me enough but Yeon taking the opportunity to create distance between himself and Ji Ah in order to protect her while also still not bothering to tell her any of the important stuff she needs to know (her current connection to Imugi) is infuriating.
I'm a little surprised that Ji Ah didn't realise what Yeon was doing especially when his last words were about her living a long life, something he keeps bringing up and wouldn't be important to him if she was just a tool to use.
I loved Shin Joo distracting Yeon and then shoving the food into his mouth. His concern about Yeon is very sweet.
