Amazing Race and Doctor Who 5x03 Thoughts

• When this episode began I was rooting for the two sets of brothers to make it to the final three but that did not last.
- I’ve never wanted Brett/Caite to be in the final three – I find them immature and annoying and I would hate it if they won. However, while they were as annoying as ever in this episode (the continuing constant bickering, that whole long exchange over him needing to use the bathroom), they also ran a pretty good race this leg and they weren’t the worst team of the episode.
- No, instead very early in the episode Dan/Jordan earned my enmity and I found myself wishing dearly for them to be out this episode even over Brett/Caite and to the point that I was cheering on the Detectives.
- I’ve been all over the place with the brothers – I was neutral, then I found them irritating, then I liked them okay and while they were not a team I’d have chosen for final three by the time this episode came around they were actually the second team I wanted in. Their behaviour at the beginning of the episode pretty much got rid of that. Their idiocy was really par the course for this season – first in spending two hours wandering around doing apparently nothing and then when the Detectives got the directions given to their cab driver them deciding to get their cab to follow instead of getting their cabbie the directions as well (so very, very stupid). But then their reaction to their idiocy, especially or perhaps specifically, Dan’s complete freak-out breakdown was so distasteful and ugly it made me dislike them more than I ever have. Dan’s repeated “Follow! Follow! It’s not hard!” pissed me off so much. I think I might actually would almost rather Caite/Brett win the race if it came down to these two teams. I found the whole thing just offensive and Dan so obnoxious. Ugh.
• So going into the final episode I am pretty firmly on Team Cowboy for the win and thankfully they have a good chance. I don’t love them (and certainly they are nowhere near Dustin/Kandace) but I do really like them. They are a good team that usually uses their brains and more importantly have a good relationship between them. They’re very likable and a strong team and I would be fine, even happy, for them to win. I especially want them to win, however, because I don’t want either of the other teams to win.
Doctor Who 5x03 ‘Victory of the Daleks’
I was not really impressed with this episode. I didn’t dislike it but... it was just kind of meh to me.
• At first I found the Doctor’s reaction to seeing the Dalek’s again very mild and was surprised about that. It made me think of Nine and Ten and while I didn’t know what they would have done I was sure they would have freaked out more. So when the Doctor did freak out it felt more right. I loved seeing him get so angry especially in his rant to the Dalek that ended with them revealing the truth.
• The Doctor screaming “Kill me!” was giving me flashbacks. I don’t think this Doctor has Nine and especially Ten’s suicidal tendencies and this was simple a gambit to get them to reveal themselves (though I suppose at this time it may be too early to say conclusively that it’s gone.)
• The Doctor continues to amuse which makes me happy. Specifically there were two parts – the first was the Doctor’s reaction when one of the Dalek’s asked ‘can I be of assistance’ as he was trying to convince Churchill to get rid of them that I can’t really describe effectively but was funny and the second was his line “Okay, it’s a jammy dodger but I was promised tea.”I I like the Doctor being irreverent and blasé during life and death and other very serious scenes.
• Amy’s reaction to the Doctor’s freaking out about the Daleks in the beginning felt a little off. She didn’t seem to believe him when he was going on about them being alien and dangerous and that seemed weird. I mean yes, she doesn’t remember them and the Doctor hadn’t really filled them all in on who the Dalek’s were and what they’ve done but frankly I think all of that’s really irrelevant. He is the Doctor. If he’s telling them that they’re aliens that he’s run into before and a danger you don’t act like he’s being silly or irrational – you believe him.
• So Amy not remembering the Dalek’s – clearly this has something to do with the cracks in the universe that are appearing everywhere but what does it really mean? In previous episode there were subtle discrepancies in timeline (Rory’s hospital ID having been issued in 1990 but there being modern tech, Amy’s age given by the British ship not lining up to what it should be) and I wonder what the one in this episode was.
- The zeppelins brought to mind the other reality and I’m wondering if these cracks in the universe are affecting it as well? Is it confined to just this reality? If it is once again opening the way between realities then perhaps the Doctor isn’t actually in the original one? Could he have slipped through to another one but one that is very similar to the one we know? If RTD was still in charge I’d hope for a return of Rose and Ten II but with Moffat that won’t happen and I don’t really want it to.
• Amy’s continuing to be very smart – her idea to consult Bracewell was a good one. And I liked that she got to him by bringing up love as a way to make him feel human. Though – were we supposed to think that she’s in love with the Doctor? I guess I could see that. Her having loved the Doctor since she was a child. We’ll see where that goes. I was surprised that she caught Churchill playing pickpocket with the Doctor’s key though.
• So how exactly did them convincing Bracewell that he was human stop the bomb from going off? That didn’t make that much sense to me.
• The Doctor kissing Amy on the head after they won the day, after he was so overcome by how brilliant she’d been he was speechless, really worked for me. I thought it was very appropriate considering how he met her as a child. A kiss on the forehead is really something you do more with a child (especially one under your care.)
• I was sure at the end that the Doctor was going to give Amy a key to the TARDIS but it didn’t appear to even cross his mind. I wonder how long it’s going to be for her to get one?
• I really want to know which Doctor Churchill met previously. Churchill’s “So you changed your face again.” seems to indicate that he’s met at least two previous versions of the Doctor. I wonder how many Doctor’s there are running around London during the London Blitz? Besides Eleven and Nine that is. I love the idea of Amy had wondering off and meeting Rose and Jack and Nine.
• I really thought that Bree was going to become a supporting character after her look with Amy but then nothing really came of it. We get this thread throughout the episode of her loss in the background but it’s never given any attention, and it really feels like it should have. Instead I’m left with this weird unfinished feeling. I did love how all of Churchill’s soldiers manning the map and telephones were female.
• I loved the Doctor showing up a month after the phone call even though he clearly left immediately after getting it. It amuses me that he’s managing to be even worse than, at least, his previous two incarnations at driving the TARDIS and being on time. It’s pretty much a continuing theme at this point with him and that makes me wonder if it’s going to come into play in the next episode.
• I was surprised by the Doctor’s reaction to Bracewell. I mean there was no chance that he would deactivate him, as Bracewell was resigned to, but to leave him there? I mean not only is he a robot but he’s full of future and alien knowledge. I would think that would at least warrant a warning not to ever use that knowledge again.
• The fighter planes attacking the Dalek ship while encased in – something – did not really work for me. It was very Star Wars and felt kind of out of place.
• Amy saying to the Doctor “You have arch enemies.” made me think sadly of the Master. I hope we get to see him again.
• The new rainbow Daleks amuse me but are really dumb looking. I find myself thinking of power rangers now when I think of them.
