Foxglove Summer by Ben Aaronovitch
Apr. 7th, 2021 04:46 pmI liked it.
+ I really like how they're dealing with the Lesley situation and specifically Peter's reactions. I appreciate that he understands why she would have made that choice and that he's not really angry at her per se. I liked his interactions with Lesley and him trying to reach out to her. Peter thinks that maybe there's more of a plan here and Nightingale mentions that he thinks she's trying to tell him something so hopefully there is more going on. At the very least I like that she's still worried about Peter, and clearly does care a lot about him.
+ I loved the scene where Beverly confronts Peter about how calm he is and gets him to hit the tree (poor tree) and let some of his pent up emotions out.
+ I loved Hugh calling Peter "Nightingale's starling". Peter getting known as the starling could be fun. I also liked Hugh's line about Nightingale wanting an apprentice that was "tough and clever" and that the rivers out there had heard great things about him.
+ The end felt too rushed like it was missing a final chapter to wrap everything up in. I wish there had been more followup on the two Nicoles situation.
+ I also found it far too easy with Beverly simply rolling into fairyland and saving Peter, and there being no real explanation on how she managed that. Yeah, literal deus ex machina but it didn't work for me. Peter made a deal and those are usually pretty important so it being broken so easily sits wrong. There should have been effort and consequences.
+ I liked Dominic and his interactions with Peter, and his reactions to the supernatural. The conversation about whether Peter would marry Victor was great.
+ I guessed as soon as Zoe said she had baby Nicole with her that she'd been switched as a baby and then switched back while the girls were missing.
